Animal Profile

Woody

Hello, my name is Woody. My animal id is #235396. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/28/2025.

Woody is at Risk due to behavior concerns. Upon arrival Woody was noted to be social with staff, highly treat motivated, and despite being tense at times was able to complete his intake medical exam allowing all handling. Woody has been noted to be consistently highly reactive to dogs, both kennel fighting and pulling towards dogs with tense body and visually fixating. While he has been able to be briefly redirected with verbal cues or treats, Woody will persistently try to re-establish line of sight to dogs. During his dog-dog interaction, Woody muzzle punched the gate between him and a the greeter dog with growling and tense body. On one occasion, Woody was noted to hard stare at a child across the street with tense body and had to pulled away by his harness. Woody is also starting to show significant signs of deterioration in kennel. Woody chewed through a part of the kennel wall, causing him to bleed with significant amount of blood found on kennel wall and floor. Medically, Woody is noted to be recovering from CIRDC – Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, have dental disease, and be underweight.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

He is able to be leashed and clipped to his harness with ease. He is then taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and muzzle punches the gate and begins growling and vocalizing. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He then pulls on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 9/1/25: PM WALK: Staff reported that Woody was stiff and hard staring at a child across the street. He does respond to the handler calling to him and tossing treats, which helps slightly. Woody would then immediately turn back towards the dog. Once out of kennel he pulls hard towards the other kennels. He is walked on the street using a harness. When he sees a dog in close proximity he immediately pulls hard in their direction. Handler pulls him away to create distance. Once away, he walks ahead of handler pulling on the harness moderately until he sees another dog. Then he pulls hard again in their direction unable to be refocused. In the behavior room, he is soft bodied and social remaining near handlers and seeking treats. He allows petting and collaring. He attempts to cage fight on the way back to kennel, pulling hard towards the other kennel and will no go back in his kennel as he is staring at the neighboring dog. Another handler lifts him up by his harness and places him back into kennel. 8/28/25: It is reported that Woody is highly dog and kennel reactive. He also pulls very hard while on leash.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Woody so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No Young Children: Due to Woody's size and strength, we recommend a home with no young children. Single Pet Home/No Dog Parks: Due to the noted dog reactivity Woody has displayed in care, we recommend placement in a single pet home and that Woody not be taken to dog parks.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Woody was reported to kennel fight with neighboring dogs on his way to his kennel. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Woody to check in with his handler when seeing his triggers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/Leash Pulling: Woody is reported by staff to pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
