Midnight Oreo
Hello, my name is Midnight Oreo. My animal id is #240938. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/5/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMidnight Oreo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Midnight Oreo returned to the Care Center as a stray with limited history. Upon his return Midnight Oreo was noted to be hard barking at dogs and showing early signs of arousal concerns by jumping on staff and leash biting. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Midnight Oreo has continued to show concerning levels of on-leash reactivity to both dogs and people. At times Midnight Oreo has been observed to pull toward, stare and hard bark at both people and dogs on the street and is not consistently able to be redirected. Midnight Oreo has also been reported to be anxious, high-pitch vocalizing during his handling assessment and at times in kennel. With select staff, Midnight Oreo has become social, treat motivated and allows petting. Medically, Midnight Oreo is apparently healthy.

Midnight Oreo arrived at MACC as a stray with a limited history. During his previous stay Midnight was observed to be fearful with defensive behaviors and anxious. During his current stay in the care center Midnight has been noted to be reactive to people while on leash and have a low threshold for arousal. Observed to hard bark towards people and dogs while on leash. During his assessment Midnight was observed become over aroused during the jog portion. He began jumping up towards the leash and lunging towards the handler. The handler had to straight arm him to keep him away. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home.

An ACS states that he jumps towards the kennel when exiting; he also vocalizes towards dog when in the yard 12/17/25- Midnight oreo is laying down sleeping at the back of his kennel when handler approaches, he wakes up and slowly comes to the front as handler unlocks his door. He is easily leashed and when exiting he pulls hard towards the passing kennels barking. Handler has to pull him away from a kennel and exits the room. He is taken to the play yard and placed on a drag leash. He sees a dog in a neighboring pen and starts to go towards the fence. Handler calls to him and he comes to them with a soft body, he takes treats with mild pressure. He is social with handler and bounces around the pen, he follows the command to sit and paw which he is rewarded. Handler sits on the bench and Midnight follows them. Handler pats their lap and Midnight jumps up with his front paws. Handler scratches his head, neck and back, he leans into their body. Another handler walks the pen with a dog, handler fed him treats and he kept his focus on them. He jumps down and sniffs around. Handler calls to him and he comes over, jumps on their lap again with front paws. Handler scratches Midnight's back and he stretches his head upwards and licks at the air. He is eager to come out of kennel and is able to be quickly leashed. He then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard ahead and would hard bark and try to pull towards people that he saw. He is unable to be redirected and would constantly turn back to see if the people were still there. He has no reactions to dogs and is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would jump up on the handler and is able to sit for treats. He would jump up high onto the handler while jogging and is able to be distracted when the handler stops and treats are tossed. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He had to be muscled back into kennel due to not wanting to go in
Summary (7):: 12/6/25: Midnight Oreo is sitting at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He then high-pitch vocalize before the handler unlocks his kennel. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. He relieves himself before going outside. Once outside, Midnight sees a large dog; he attempts to pull towards and barks at while walking past it. On the street, he displays the same behavior when another large dog is a few feet away. On the street, Midnight Oreo switches between pulling hard and moderately. When seeing two other dogs a few feet away, Midnight looks at both. The handler stops walks and tries to get his attention by calling his name and showing him treats, but Midnight keeps looking back at the dogs. He then starts to whine and attempts to pull in their direction(s), but the handler pulls him away to continue the walk. Midnight sees another dog several feet away but the handler distracts him by giving him a treat. Upon return, the handler clips their leash and returns Midnight Oreo to kennel. 11/6/25: Clifford is standing at the front of the kennel, soft body and wagging tail. He is whining as handler unlocks the kennel and is not interested in treats but is easily leashed without them. He is walked on the street where he walks ahead of handler slight pull. He darts back and forth on the leash in an anxious manner and at one point attempts to jump onto a parked car. In the behavior room, he is anxious pacing the room but leans into handler when pet. He is easily collared. He is run back to kennel and goes in using muscle. 11/5/25: Oreo (Clifford) is reported to "pull hard" and needs to be jogged into kennel on whiteboard. 11/5/25: (LATE ENTRY) Clifford is observed to baulk when attempting to return to kennel. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have a limited history on Midnight Oreo FKA Clifford so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and low threshold for arousal we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Midnight has been observed to jump up on handlers often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: During his previous intake it was reported that Midnight Oreo FKA Clifford was barking and growling. Midnight was observed to become tense and flail while having a muzzle on. During his current intake he was observed to hard bark towards people. It is important to move slowly with Midnight, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Midnight was observed to be whining and pacing after his medical exam. He is also observed to be zig zagging while on leash. During his current stay Midnight has been observed to be whining and vocalizing often in and out of kennel. If Midnight displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: During intake and while in care Midnight has been observed to pull towards other dogs while barking. He is also noted to hard bark towards people while on leash. Midnight will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: During intake Midnight was observed to bite the leash as it was being removed. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Arousal: During the jog portion of his assessment Midnight was observed to jump up towards the leash and lunge towards the handler. The handler had to straight arm him and toss treats. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Midnight to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
