Animal Profile

Cheddar

Hello, my name is Cheddar. My animal id is #195162. I am a desexed female black cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 3/7/2024, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Cheddar is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Cheddar was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/14/24 On top of kuranda bed when spoken to, body low and face tense. Her ears are forward. She watches me with dilated pupils and then sniffs the treaties offered. When I attempt petting she flinches so I don't push it further. When I lower the cage cover back down I hear her begin to eat the squeeze-ups immediately. Will continue to build positive associations. 3/20/24 Laying curled up on top of her den with a tense face and body, eyes wide, I offer her chicken but she doesn't show any interest and remains tense and frozen. 3/24/24 Lying on top of kuranda bed, body and face tense and pupils dilated. Her ears were forward. She sniffs the treats offered and watches me wide-eyed when spoken to but she remains frozen and does not engage with the offerings while I'm watching. Hopefully she'll investigate the treats and toy later when she feels more comfortable. 3/27/24 Sitting on top of her den with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. She backs away from me with her ears tilted. I offer her squeeze up on her bed and left her to eat on her own. 4/4/24 Lying down hiding in den with tense body and wide eyes. Frozen and ignores treats offered and has low appetite for food and medication. Tolerates petting on the head and cheeks but slowly turns his head away and blankly stares. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 4/10/24 Cheddar has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. She is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cheddar was lying on top of her kuranda bed as the assessor approached, body and face tense and pupils dilated. Cheddar made eye contact with wide eyes when spoken to and she remained tense as the kennel door opened. Cheddar tolerated petting along her head and body with the assessor's hand while tilting her ears and turning her head to watch and sniff the hand pass along her back. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Cheddar displayed similar behaviors during her re-assessment. Cheddar tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
