Bite history:: 8/25/26: Around 8:30 am, the rangers decided to feed both dogs at the same time. MMB 1, Tenzin, finished eating his food, and MMB 2, Ethan, had stopped eating, walked away from his bowl, and left some food behind. MMB 1, Tenzin, walked over to Ethan's food bowl and started to eat his food. Both dogs began fighting. During the commotion, 1 Ranger attempted to separate the dogs and grabbed Ethan's collar; another ranger placed a plastic chair between the dogs, and the 1st ranger was bitten on their left forearm. The ranger is unsure which dog bit them. The bite was a bite and release, and it broke skin. The ranger sought medical attention at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Due to the multiple bite incident that occurred, Tenzin is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Tenzin came in following a bite incident with a novel male intact large mixed breed dog over food, involving a bite and release redirection towards a person. It is unknown which dog bit. 9/8/26: Tenzin is introduced to a novel intact female and initially does not approach the fence and interacts with handlers. He is coaxed over and is tense at the gate with a mid level flagged tail and hackles raised. He wiggles towards the handler of the other dog and then tenses when the other dog sniffs nose to nose through the fence, flagging his tail again. After a few seconds, he gives a couple stiff mid level wags and then marks on the fence. He sniffs nearby the fence, tenses when the other dog approaches, then follows her along the fence line and sniffs nose to nose through the fence giving faster mid level wags with a tense body and hackles raised.

Summary (6):: 09/14/26: Tenzin is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he barks and jumps up on the kennel door a few times as handler unlocks his kennel door. Tenzin is distracted using treats and is leashed before exiting kennel and following handler out to the street for his walk. Tenzi pulls down the hall exuberantly with moderate leash pressure but once outside he slows down. He walks in front of handler pulling mildly and passing people on the street without issue. Tenzin stops to relieve himself throughout the walk and accepts treats gently from handler, he will also occasionally stop in front of handler seeking more treats. He is walked around the street for a while without issue before being brought back to the care centers, he is returned to kennel following tossed treats. 9/5/26: Tenzin is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body, standing on his hind legs and vocalizing; as he jumps around, the handler presents a handful of treats, leashes him as he's distracted, and brings him out the room. Tenzin walks with mild leash tension and doesn't react to people or dogs. He jumps on the handler socially, soliciting treats, which he eats when tossed. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Tenzin to his kennel.

Summary (7):: 9/4/26: Tenzin is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body, standing on his hind legs; once he jumps down, the handler leashes and brings him out the room. Tenzin is brought to the yard and enter the playpen; he sniffs around pen and relieves himself. He also jumps on and sits in front of the handler for treats, which he takes with moderate pressure. Tenzin doesn't react to dogs or handlers walking by. The handler walks Tenzin around the yard, which he does with mild leash tension. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Tenzin to his kennel. 09/03/26: Tenzin is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. He is given a treat and accepts it before being leashed while he stands on the kennel door and exits kennel following handler and spinning around excitedly. He walks with handler pulling moderately toward the dog rooms Tenzin passes, but is pulled away and brought to the yard by handler. Outside Tenzin jumps up toward handler when offered treats but is slowly taught to sit for treats which he picks up on slowly but progressively. He approaches handler on a bench and solicits social interaction, leaning into pets and leaning on handlers lap. Tenzin walks for a while before being brought back inside, he sits on handlers feet and allows them to clip his leash before he returns to kennel following a treat. 09/02/26: Tenzin is at the front of his kennel as handlers approach. He is offered treats and accepts them with a loose body and wagging tail. Tenzin is leashed easily and he exits kennel without issue and passes staff members attending the walk to assist handler. Tenzin walks with handler out to the street, he is loose bodied and accepts treats tossed to him. He is walked to the yard and relieves himself shortly after reaching outside. He follows handler into the play yard and sniffs around accepting treats and approaching handlers with a loose body. He is generally uninterested in dogs in the yard and walks with handler around the perimeter of the yard. When walking around the perimeter of the yard Tenzin sees a small dog and fixates on them but is easily refocused when called to by handler and given a treat. After a while Tenzin is brought back inside. His leash is clipped and he returns to kennel without issue. 8/26/26: Tenzin is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and jumps up on the door. The handler speaks to him in a high pitch tone and offers him treats. Tenzin is receptive and eagerly takes treats. Handler offers more treats and then ends the interaction.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Tenzin so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite incident, we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to the bite incident regarding resource guarding we recommend a single pet home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Tenzin has been observed to become tense and hard stare at other dogs while on leash. Tenzin will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal: Tenzin has been observed to jump up high onto handlers. During the jog portion of the assessment Tenzin also jumped up high. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Tenzin to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors.
