Summary (6):: 6/27/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Camila is showing teeth and growling during leashing and was not able to be taken on her PM walk. Canine behavior checked her out and she would not take high value treats, lifted her lip, then lunged and snapped at them when attempting to leash. 6/24/26: Camila is laying at the back of the kennel when the handle approaches. She has a neutral body and lip licks when the handler speaks in a soft voice. She is not receptive to the treats that the handler tosses. When the handler attempts to lasso her, Camila lunges forward, baring teeth and hard barks at the handler. When the handler attempts to leash her again, Camila jumps up on the kennel door, baring teeth and barking towards the handler's hand. The handler is able to coax her through the loop and opens the kennel door wide. With coaxing Camilia slowly exits the kennel. She is taken to the yard where she maintains a slightly tense body and low head. Camilia relieves herself several times and remains aloof to the handler. The handler is able to clip their leash and she is returned to kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 6/23/26: Staff report that Camila lunged and snapped during leashing, so canine behavior takes her on a walk. When they approach, she is laying at the back of her kennel on her kuranda bed. She lifts a lip slightly at the handler when they open the door. She gets up for tossed treats which she eats off the floor, but stops before finishing them and goes back to her bed. The handler tries high value treats with no success. They leash Camila with the pole leash and apply light leash pressure with no success. They baby talk her and coax her and wait for some time but she does not move. Eventually, the handler uses moderate leash pressure and she leaves the kennel. She is walked to the driveway where she walks around slowly. Then she is brought to the office where she gets on the couch and rests. She coughs a few times. The handler switches her from the pole leash to the regular lead while she is on the couch. After some time, they use light leash pressure to get her off the couch and she returns willingly to kennel and lies down on her bed. 6/22/26: It is reported via the whiteboard that Camila is showing teeth and growling when leashing. 6/22/26: It is reported that Camila is at the back of the kennel and is reluctant to exit the kennel. The handler has to use the pole leash to leash her. 6/21/26 (Assessment): Camila is lying down at front of kennel as handler approached. She was easily leashed and taken for a brief walk before her assessment. Camila pulled lightly while on her walk and walk next to handler and then slightly ahead of handler. When a dog passed by she turned to follow dog but she kept a neutral body. She was then taken to the behavior room for her assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). Camila was social with handlers and accepted treats with a soft mouth. She was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/20/26: Camila is laid down on her side in her crate as the handler approaches. As they attempt to open the crate, Camila sits up, and snaps and hard barks at the handler; the handler slowly closes the latch and ends the interaction.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, and resource guarding we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Camila's previous owner states that she will bark and growl when in possession of food. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Camila's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: During her medical Camila was noted to have a tense body, whale eye, low tail carriage, growled and lunged when restrained. While in care, Camilia has been noted to snap at handlers when they approach her. It is important to move slowly with Camila, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
