Bull
Hello, my name is Bull. My animal id is #226044. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.
Bull is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He used to tolerate petting and attention is now displaying signs of fearfulness and will hiss or swat when reaching close. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. Bull was in the den, appearing slightly tense, with a somewhat tight body and his head down. He accepted all petting while remaining tense and didn't really appear to appreciate the attention. He sniffed the treats and gave a few slow eye blinks while staying in place. He's a good cat who just needs a little time to warm up to his new home. Bull interacts with the observer, solicits & appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. No known history of behavioral problems. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with either an average amount of cat experience or demonstrate a basic understanding of typical cat behavior.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/3/25 ACFR Hissing, swatting, and lunging when attempting to interact with him. 6/4/25 FB26 Bull exhibited stress behaviors, hissing as he returned to his cubby and again when the door was opened. Though initially wary, he showed some curiosity by sniffing the scratcher tool and briefly tolerated head petting. However, he soon retreated to the ledge, vocalized stress meows, and the session was ended to minimize his distress. 6/7/25 Vol. Bull is in loaf on upper shelf of the condo. When he looks at me, he hisses but readily eats up Temptations that are dropped in. In response to the condo door opening, he flattened his ears, pupils dilated, and looks as if to pounce on the scratcher tool with puree treat, hissing at it. Still adjusting. 6/10/25 ACS Hiding in the top cubby. During cleaning and feeding time, he rushes out of the cubby to the front of the shelf, hisses, and swats at the air in front of him. He continues to remain tense and stands his ground when reaching around the main kennel area to tidy up his space. Vol. No toys in his kennel. He was hiding behind hid privacy sheet when I approached. He hissed when the kennel door was opened. Ate Squeeze-ups from clicker. Devoured the canned tuna. Enjoyed play-swatting at the cat dancer. 6/17/24 Vol. Hiding in den behind privacy sheet; hissed when kennel door was opened and ran into his larger den. Ate a little Squeeze-up from clicker but hissed again and ran behind privacy sheet. Only came out to eat tuna. 6/18/25 Vol. Bull was crouched on shelf near front of main kennel. His eyes and ears were neutral. His behavior seemed conflicted. He hissed when I sat down next to him, then rolled onto his side and stretched his body out and began to knead his paws. Then, while sprawled out on his side, he spit at me, but his body remained loose. Afterward he sat up and ate squeeze up from scratcher tool, and did not swat or vocalize. 6/20/25 Vol. On shelf and came to front of cage to look and wave paws while I was reading report. Lots of noise and activity in the room - Bull stressed meowed, crouched on shelf, ears a little sideways. Approached to open age and Bull lunged at bars to try to get to hand. Tried laser toy through bars to distract - Bull watched the red dot for a few seconds and then turned his attention to hand and toy outside cage. Slipped treat bowl onto shelf, Bull stress meowed and came up to eat. Ended interaction.

He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
