Zahira

Hello, my name is Zahira. My animal id is #196538. I am a desexed female black tabby cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/26/2024.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Zahira is seeking emergency placement for medical concerns. Zahira has suspected chronic kidney disease with moderate anemia. She is finding shelter life stressful and will not allow more aggressive supportive care like subcutaneous fluid administration. She is eating her renal diet fairly well, and her kidney values have improved. Her anemia has worsened as her hydration has improved while in the shelter. Zahira needs a quiet place out of the shelter to enjoy her senior years.

I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Zahira was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/27/24 Eating her meal by the front. Upon approach, she looks up hisses and low growls. Slowly retreats walking into her den. Needs time to acclimate. 3.28.24 Middle of kennel upon approach. Stress-meows which turns into a growl. Once staff provide Temptations growl ceases and ears are erect and forward. Staff offers Churu on click-stick, she eats, staff clicks to build the positive association. Staff repeats until Churu is finished, and ends interaction with praise. Note that there were several times she "growl-ate". 3/29/24 Behind Shoreline cover sitting meatloafed in middle of cage next to litter box. Eyes open, ears forward. Approached with scratcher tool and Zahira sat up quickly, eyes and ears alert. Allowed head scratches with tool, moving head to get more. Got up, turned around facing back of cage - tried scratching body and she meowed - quickly turned back and settled down asking for more head and neck/chin scratches with tool. Gave plenty of scratches and ended interaction. 3/30/24 Sitting up behind the litter box on approach, body and eyes soft. She eagerly approached tool for squeeze up. When I opened the door to the main condo, she trotted down to get more treats, but shied away slightly from pets with the tool. Continued to lick treat while being pet on the head and neck but then began to low growl. Ended Interaction. 3/31/24 Resting calmly on the shelf in the main kennel, paws tucked under. Eyes normal but following my movement. Gave one soft meow when I read her papers, and again when I put Temptations through the bars, but then immediately got up to investigate and ate a few. Considered the tool with squeeze-up and treats on it for a minute, then eagerly ate from it. Use mouth clicks to continue clicker training. Gave a low growl when the tool approached her head, but allowed head and cheek scratches. She moved her head around a little bit to engage with the scratches, but with occasional low growls - seems conflicted. 4/4/24 Resting in kennel, Zahira did not move but did lean forward to sniff my hand. She allowed pets, but would become hesitant a couple of times. She would stop to sniff and stayed tense. After scratching her neck she did hiss, vocalized her stress and kept a low growl.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent,Timid,Skittish,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Zahira was resting on her bedding upon approach. Alert with neutral eyes. Ears erect and forward. She began to growl and hiss when opening her kennel. Curious with the scratcher tool but allows petting along the head and chin. She sniffs offered treats while low grumbling throughout the assessment. When moving closer for a body stroke she quickly turns and swats. Left alone to reduce stress. Zahira tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
