Date of assessment:: 8/4/2025
Summary:: Luna Lulu has been observed to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center. In kennel she has been observed to have a tense body, tucked tail, and will escalate to thrashing and snapping at the leash. When a handler attempted to pick her up she lifted her lip and growled towards the handler. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety Luna is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 8/12/25: Handler noticed Luna Lulu at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. Handler spoke to her and she took treats with hard pressure through the bars. Later on, Luna Lulu is at the front of the kennel sitting with a neutral body. Handler opens the kennel and she sticks her head out. Handler places the leash slowly over her head and when secured they open the kennel door and Luna Lulu walks out of the kennel. She enters the hallway and continues walking slowly. She has a lowered tense body and begins to circle around the handler, avoiding walking forward. She is then walked back into the kennel and quickly jumps in before the handler is able to clip her leash to remove. Handler places their hand near her and she approaches with a soft body and wagging tail. Handler is able to remove the leash from over her head without issue. She is left with treats and the interaction is ended. 8/10/25: It is written on the whiteboard that Luna Lulu refuses to move over to the neighboring kennel for cleaning. 8/8/25: (KSV) Luna Lulu is siting in the back corner of her kennel as handler approaches. She lays down and begins trembling as the handler tries to speak to her. She has no interest in treats when the handler tosses them inside and doesn't respond to a squeaker. The handler then walks away, ending the interaction.
Summary (7):: 8/3/25 (PM): Luna Lulu is curled up in the back left of her corner as handler approaches. She is trembling, whale eyeing, and excessively lip licking while looking in all directions. She is able to be gently leashed using a lasso and no pressure is put on the leash at first. Handler sits down on the floor while facing away, widens the door completely open and leaves the leash relaxed. She does not move forward at all. Some treats are tossed and baby voice is used but remains the same. Handler puts a bit of pressure on the leash and she begins to thrash backwards. Pressure is alleviated and she ceases. Luna Lulu crawls on her belly to the other side of the kennel and goes all the way to the back of the kennel. Due to high levels of FAS interaction is ended and a hook is used to removed the leash 8/3/25: Luna Lulu is laying down with tense body at the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins lip licking as the handler unlocks the door and tries to leash her. She tries to avoid the leash by moving away as it got closer. Once leashed, she remains having a tense body and refused to exit the kennel. The handler moves out the way and tosses treats inside. She remained tense and started shaking. Due to fearfulness, the handler retrieves their leash with a hook, closes the door and ends the interaction. 08/02/25(PM): When attempting to leash Luna for her PM walk, staff report Luna approaches the front before thrashing and snapping at the leash intensely. The leash is eventually secured but Luna exits kennel and attempts to hide under the kennels. When handlers attempt to pull her out she begins thrashing more intensely. Handler is able to get her back into kennel and interaction is ended. 8/2/25: Luna Lulu is in the back corner of her kennel, tense, whale eyeing. She is not interested in treats tossed to her. Handler presents leash and Luna watches it. She can be distracted by a squeaky sound momentarily while handler drapes the leash loop over her head. Once leash is secure the door is opened but she does not come out. Handler attempts coaxing, kneeling down, tossing treats and the squeaker but she does not move. Handler attempts to use a hook to remove the leash, but Luna is watchful of it with tense body and hard eyes. Leash is left to fall off naturally. 8/2/25: It was reported by staff that Luna Lulu was difficult to leash in kennel and then took a long time to step out of the kennel. Once out, she is hypervigilant and fearful, tense tucked tail. When handler attempted to pick her up, Luna lifted her lip and growled. Handler was able to pick her up using a towel.

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Luna Lulu's fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to hard barking, growling, snapping, and attempting to bite cats we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking and growling towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs we recommend a single pet home that makes no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: Luna's previous owner states that she is fearful when her paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Luna to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Luna's previous owner states that she will become fearful when disturbed and when startled. Since arriving at the care centers Luna has displayed fearful behavior, avoiding handlers and head whipping on leash and refusing walks. At one point when a handler attempted to pick Luna up she was observed to whale eye and began growling and baring teeth. Her signs of discomfort must be respected; Luna should never be forced to interact, she should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people she finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Luna. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Luna's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety: Luna is reported to experience separation anxiety in a home environment. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Luna's previous owner states that she will hard bark towards strangers that approach. Luna will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
