Cody
Hello, my name is Cody. My animal id is #191225. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/31/2025.
Cody is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in care as well in his previous home. Cody in the care center has a difficult time during interactions settling, needing assistance from staff to help him settle but will at times become aroused and start to jump incessantly, or hump. His previous owner notes that his reactivity is significant and is difficult to refocus once he starts reacting, lunging, spinning and vocalizing. His previous owner also notes the same arousal concerns he is displaying in care. Medically, Cody has pododermatitis and is overweight.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Basic Information:: Dog was found today across from client's house. Dog is a little nervous.
How is this dog around strangers?: Client was able to put a collar and leash on the dog and tied it to her gate. I was able to walk the dog to the van and he jumped in.
Date of intake:: 8/31/2025
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Limited History)
Other Notes:: Cody prior adopters noted that has a habit of trying to nibble at them whenever they try to put his harness on or his muzzle. They use treats but due to his anxiety the treats only work for 5 minutes. he’ll also run around the house while try to put the harness on. They also noted that he barks at dogs and everything outside.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded outside of the shelter. Cody previously was at our BACC location in 2024. 09/11/25 Cody is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Cody will approach the gate with a soft frame scenting the novel female dog through the gate. The novel female dog is exuberant, jumping excessively onto the gate making Cody nervous and he walks away displaying hackles. Cody maintains his distance from the gate, concluding the interaction. Cody was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 1/17/25: When off leash at the Care Center, Cody is introduced to a novel female dog. He cannot focus as he is highly anxious - heavily panting, pacing, jumping on the gate and handlers. Due to Cody's behavior, he does not greet the female.
Summary (7):: 10/01/25 (Trainer Note): Cody is laying down in his kennel as the handler approaches but stands and comes to the front with a loose body. He pulls moderately to the canine training room and engages readily in a relaxation protocol. Cody does well holding position throughout the entire protocol. He leans into contact with a soft body and is returned to kennel without issue. 09/17/25 (Trainer Note): Cody is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Cody displays a moderate pant, flushed face, and dilated pupils. He jumps up onto the handler and moves frenetically around the room. The handler engages him with a snuffle mat, which he participates in readily. Cody is led over to the mat where he hops up and sits down without issue, but moves off quickly. The handler reinforces him for taking deep breaths and for duration. Handler begins to take steps backwards and to the sides to introduce Cody to a relaxation protocol. By the end of the session the handler is able to take two steps in each direction while Cody holds his position. When he does break position he often jumps up onto the handler in an attempt to access the reinforcers. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 09/11/25: Cody is lying down in the back of his kennel but will get up and approach the front, allowing the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought out to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on him. Cody will approach the greeting gate with a soft, wiggly body and a wagging tail, but he also displays raised hackles as his playmate begins screeching on the other side of the gate. Due to the heightened arousal from the playmate, Cody is escorted back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 09/02/25 (Trainer Note): Cody is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He is loose and social with staff and allows the handler to place a collar. Cody leans into contact, but becomes aroused over time and begins to jump up and attempt to hump. He is easily redirected but eventually becomes more persistent, jumping several times up onto the handler. They use leash pressure to prevent him from being able to hump before redirecting him onto treats. He allows the handler to switch the leash back to a slip lead and is returned to kennel without issue. **Enrichment notes from previous stay available in GAN.**

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cody so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Cody's low threshold for arousal, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During the resource guarding portion of Cody’s handling assessment, he demonstrated protective behavior over a dummy toy. His body became tense, and he hovered closely while using his body to block access to the item. This behavior suggests a moderate level of resource guarding, and training should focus on building trust, teaching trade or “drop it” cues, and using desensitization techniques to reduce guarding tendencies. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: During Cody prior adopted home it was noted that he will nibble on his adopters when they attempted to harness or when they attempted to muzzle him. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Chuck jumps on handlers in a social manner. In the care center Cody is noted to mount on handlers. We recommend teaching "sit/stay" cues to help control his impulses. See handout on Impulse Control. Anxiety: Cody appears anxious during his assessment and in care. We recommend long walks and puzzle toys to help alleviate his anxiety. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Cody prior adopter noted that he barks at everything on walks. Low threshold for arousal: Cody may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
