Freckles
Hello, my name is Freckles. My animal id is #248780. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/2/2026.
Freckles is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Freckles displays high arousal concerns, including lunging at dogs, grabbing and tugging at treat pouches and clothing, and barking with rapid escalation when startled. He also shows difficulty regulating when excited or when food is present. Freckles is able to engage in training activities and tolerates handling, but is struggling to regulate his arousal levels in the care center on his own. Medically, Freckles is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

Summary:: Due to Freckles entering the facility as a stray, there is no known history of interactions with other dogs prior to intake. 03/05/26: Freckles was introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate, Freckles approached with a loose body posture while trotting toward the gate with tail wagging. Both dogs engaged in mutual greetings. After briefly disengaging and returning to the gate, Freckles began whining before redirecting to displacement scenting. Once in the pen, the dogs re-engaged in mutual greetings. When the greeter female reciprocated, Freckles responded with light pawing directed toward her. The dogs were then separated. Following separation, Freckles chose to remain at a distance, concluding the interaction. 03/04/26: Freckles was introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate, he approached with a loose frame and panting. After engaging in mutual greetings, Freckles remained at the gate and began whining. He bounced at the gate, and his whining increased as his frustration grew. Both dogs were separated, concluding the interaction.
Summary (7):: 04/09/26 (Trainer Note): Freckles is brought to the canine training room and fitted with a harness, which he tolerates without issue. He is encouraged up onto the slat mill. Freckles intermittently balks, but generally runs well. He runs faster when a treat is presented to him. After a few minutes, he is removed from the slat mill and returned to kennel. As he is being returned, he lunges at and attempts to fight the dogs in the kennels. - 4/7/26: It is reported via the behavior board that Freckles goes after treat bags. 4/6: ACS staff report that during walks, Freckles becomes aroused seeing other dogs. He begins jumping up and grabbing/tugging at treat pouches and on one occasion their shirt and shoe laces. 4/5: While in the beahvior office, Freckles was panting but loose bodied with handlers. He hears a knock at the office door and begins hard barking with his body tensing as an ACS opened the door. Due to his behavior, the ACS immediately exits. 3/29/26: Freckles is jumping up at her kennel door while heavy panting as handler approaches. She tries to grab the handler's leash as they quickly leash her. She then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would continue to pull ahead with heavy panting. She is comfortable approaching the handler and would sit to receive treats. She would stare at dogs and people that were nearby and across the street. She is able to be redirected with a squeaker and treats. She pulls hard on the way back to her kennel, and tries to pull towards a person on her hind legs while barking and growling as they hold open the entrance door. She is able to be taken away and is returned back to her kennel with no issues. 3/5/26: Freckles was standing at front of crate when handler approached. As handler opened crate door Freckles was pushing on door to get out. He was easily leashed and pulled from crate and taken to the back yard for a play group (Please see pg notes for details). On his way to the play yard he stopped several times on the ramp and had to be encouraged to continue. He was returned to his crate with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to Freckle's low threshold for arousal and barrier frustration, we recommend an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Freckles is noted to jump up often. Training should focus on reinforcing calm alternatives such as sitting for attention and consistently removing reinforcement for jumping. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Freckles is noted to take treats with mild pressure.Teaching gentle treat taking and reinforcing calm, controlled interactions can help encourage softer mouth use. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: Freckles is noted to display a flushed face and heavy panting. These behaviors indicate elevated arousal and difficulty settling. Providing predictable routines, calming enrichment, and rewarding relaxed behavior can help reduce stress. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Leash-biting | Low threshold for arousal: Freckles is noted to mildly leash bite. During walks, he becomes aroused and begins grabbing at clothing or treat pouches. Redirecting with high-value treats, practicing structured exit routines, and reinforcing engagement. Please see the handout on Arousal.
