Louie
Hello, my name is Louie. My animal id is #243611. I am a male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/27/2025.
Louie is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Louie tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/31/25 Vol. In hidey box, could not see. Put in treat bowl, no movement or reaction. Approached box entry with hard treat on tool, no movement or reaction. Let rest, removed Ended interaction. Saw whiskers by entry as I was closing up cage. 1/5/26 FB32 Crouched down hiding in den, harshly hisses when removing den cover. Repeatedly harshly hisses and begins growling when reaching close to offer treats on the tool. Placed in den and then pulled tool away. When returning den cover, he lunges at the front door and harshly hisses again. Replaced den cover with cage door cover. Very fearful and has potential to escalate. 1/7/26 Vol. Louie was standing at front of kennel, hissing repeatedly. His eyes were wide and dilated. He did not show interest in treats (tossed gently through kennel bars). A dog barking loudly nearby may have contributed to his stress. After a few moments he went inside den and lay down with his head poking out, and low growled occasionally. He extended his neck to sniff at a catnip mouse. When offered squeeze up on scratcher tool, he hissed at first, then ate. He accepted more squeeze up, again hissing initially. Although he made a lot of unhappy vocalizations, he did not escalate to swatting at any point. 1/9/26 Vol. Louie hissed as I raised the shoreline cover on his kennel. He watched me from the side entrance of the den with dilated eyes, forward ears, and downward whiskers as I spoke to him softly through the kennel door. He came halfway out of the den as I poured a Bisque wet treat into a tray. Since he did a small hiss and lifted his paw when I removed the carabiner clip from his kennel door, I inserted the tray with the wet treat through the door without opening it (to reduce stress). He came forward and ate some of it with me standing there. He then sniffed a little catnip on the peacock feather but leaned away from any movement of the feather. He remained outside of the den to watch a laser light move around the kennel. He then played with a small catnip mouse offered to him in front of his den. Since he is active and does not hide in his den, he appears to need a double kennel. 1/11/26 Vol. Resting in den. Hissed repeatedly when Shoreline cover was pulled back with widely dilated eyes. Leaned out portal to sniff a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up, but did not eat. Then switched to a low growl. Did not show interest in the laser pointer. Lunged and hissed at a feather toy. Left a Feliway square. ~CONTINUED IN GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Louie should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water, either because prior owner notes [reported to be friendly but takes time to warm up] and because behaviors seen at the Care Center [shy, fearful, tense, hides, avoids contact] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: Louie has displayed fearful behaviors at the care center and may be intimidated by young children. No children under age 13, respectful older children only. Counselor discretion. It should be noted that the finder reports that although he takes time to warm up, he is friendly and plays gently with children.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 12/30/2025 Louie is sitting upright in his den with a tense body, wide eyes, and very dilated pupils, holding one paw slightly raised as the kennel door is opened. When the den cover is lifted, he freezes and looks up at the assessor without moving. When petting is attempted using the scratcher tool, he tolerates all petting but does not engage with the attention, remaining highly tense throughout. The interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 01/30/2026 Louie is out in his kennel with forward ears and slightly dilated eyes. He looks cautiously as the assessor approaches, his tail slightly flicking and looking as if he wants to flee. Louie approaches the front of the kennel and sticks his nose through the bar, reaching with his paws to try to bat lightly at the assessor. When the kennel door is opened, Louie flees into his den. He pokes his head out to sniff scratcher tool and bats at it moderately. Squeeze up is placed on the scratcher tool that he eats. When petting is attempted, Louie jumps up on top of his den and bats at the tool several times with claws sheathed. He tolerates a few pets on his cheeks and when the tool passes along his body he hisses but does not escalate further. Louie tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
