Animal Profile

Beep

Hello, my name is Beep. My animal id is #247638. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/15/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Beep is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

He did not sniff treats, and when the assessor went to pet, briefly touching him on the head, he attempted to strike and bared his teeth. The interaction was ended.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Beep was brought in without information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/20/26 FB20 Beep is sitting in his den with a tense face, dilated eyes, airplane ears. When the assessor opens kennel door, he lunges, strikes the den door, and hisses. A den cover is placed on his den, and scratcher tool offered to the portal. Beep lunges and strikes again. 2/26/26 FB20 Beep is showing similar behaviors as the previous enrichment note. 2/28/26 FB73 Beep is sitting upright in his den, pupils dilated, tense, crouching forward and hissing as the den cover is lifted. When interaction is attempted (touching the den door, petting with scratcher tool, offering treats, etc.), Beep will hiss, lunge forward, and swat hard towards the handler. He does not currently respond to treats or soft talking. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Beep was lying quietly in the den, facing out in the loaf position with an average expression but paying attention to the assessor. He did not sniff treats, and when the assessor went to pet, briefly touching him on the head, he attempted to strike and bared his teeth. The interaction was ended. Beep is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
