Yoshi
Hello, my name is Yoshi. My animal id is #227307. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/16/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormYoshi is at risk due to behavioral concerns in care. In the care center, he has exhibited intense leash biting, kennel fighting, and redirection attempts during transitions, including mouthing handlers' clothing and grabbing at leashes. While these incidents have not resulted in injury, he has made it difficult for handlers to safely walk him in and out of his kennel. In more calmer settings, he is highly social and engages well with enrichment and training games. Medically, Yoshi is healthy.

Summary:: Due to Yoshi entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/23/25 Yoshi is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Yoshi greets the novel male dog at the gate with a loose frame. Both dogs will scent one another at the gate. The novel male will offer play bows and begin whining before climbing the gate. Yoshi will start lip licking with ears pinned back and a high curved tail. Yoshi will become avoidant retreating from the gate. The novel male will remain present at the gate before eventually loosing interest. Both dogs are separated, concluding the interaction. 05/21/25: When off leash at the Care Center Yoshi is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Yoshi approaches pulling to the gate with a high curved tail and ears back. Both dogs will scent one another through the gate. The novel female will display a flagging tail and ears back. Yoshi will remain present as the novel female will walk away displacement scenting. The novel female returns, climbing on the gate before returning back to displacement scenting. Both dogs are separated, concluding the interaction.
Summary (4):: 07/06/25: Yoshi begins jumping up onto the kennel door panting heavily as handler approaches. Handler cracks open kennel door to offer a toy which Yoshi immediately grabs and drops on the ground before quickly biting onto the lead. Handler uses a second toy to distract Yoshi and retrieve their lead through the crack in the door. Handler resets and on second attempt, Yoshi ignores the toy and immediately bites onto the lead beginning to tug. Handler uses a squeaker to distract Yoshi into dropping the lead and quickly pulls the lead out of kennel. Handler exits room and returns with spray cheese which they spray onto the kennel floor and drop the lead over Yoshi's head. He pulls moderately to the Canine Behavior Office where he is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Yoshi engages with a licky mat and puzzle feeder for several minutes and will jump up onto handlers in a social manner. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 07/05/25: When the handler approaches Yoshi is standing in front of his kennel door with a loose but aroused frame. when the handler opens the kennel door, they will feed the leash through the kennel door as well as through the slip lead. Yoshi will immediately go for the rope toy and bite it. This will allow the handler to easily leash Yoshi and escort him out of the room and to the play yards. When on leash Yoshi will loose interest in the toy, opting to not carry it but to moderately pull a head of the handler. When in the the yard Yoshi will pace around, exploring and scenting but not taking full interest in toys, only chasing them when the handler throws them but loosing interest once the toy stops movement. Yoshi is escorted back to his kennel where he is safely secured.
Summary (5):: 07/02/25 (trainer note): Yoshi was standing on his hind legs with a neutral frame as handler approached. Handler attempted to offer him a treat in order to lure his head to be leashed. Yoshi ignored the treats and mouthed the leash but released it a moment later. Handler instead used a rope toy to lure Yoshi to be leashed. He took the toy and allowed the leash to be looped over his head, though upon exiting his kennel he dropped the toy a moment later. He walked to the live room and was placed on a drag leash. He explored the room while heavily panting. Handler provided a variety of enrichment items to help him decompress. He engaged with the enrichment and participated in LATTE rotations and the up, down game. At the end of the session, Yoshi allowed the handler to leash him using treats and was tolerant of his drag leash being removed. He was returned to his kennel with ease. 07/01/25 Yoshi is reported to leash bite and kennel and attempt to redirect. Yoshi will grab onto their pants, not breaking skin nor making any contact. 6/30/25: Yoshi is observed to kennel fight crates leaving the kennel room, thrashing, attempts to redirect onto a staff member when leaving the kennel room. Yoshi was also reported to leash bite a bit before exiting the building. 06/28/25 (reassessment): Yoshi greets the handler at the front of his kennel with a loose body posture and a wagging tail. While in the kennel, he shows signs of over-arousal. When the kennel is unlocked, the handler hangs the open lock on the door. Yoshi responds by softly nibbling at the handler’s hand with his front teeth. Once leashed, he eagerly pushes his muzzle through the kennel door in an attempt to exit quickly. Upon exiting the kennel, Yoshi jumps up onto the handler. The handler remains still, prompting Yoshi to jump down, though he repeats the behavior shortly afterward. He is then escorted to the Behavior Assessment (BA) room for reassessment. Throughout the session, he remains highly aroused, pacing the room and seeking stimulation, though he continues to be socially motivated and responsive to handlers. Once the reassessment is complete, Yoshi is returned to his kennel, where he is safely unleashed and secured.
Summary (6):: 6/22: Yoshi was heard screeching in his kennel. When a handler went to check on him, they saw him biting and pulling on the kennel bars of his door, rocking the shoreline bank. He stopped when he saw the handler, but continued panting heavily. 06/17/25 Yoshi is standing on his kennel door as the handler approaches, displaying a loose, wiggly frame. Yoshi is easily leashed and taken outside to the play yard. Yoshi maintains his loose, wiggly as he trots his way to the play yard. He enters the pen exuberantly, bouncing at the handler play fully, jumping onto them as well. The handler receives a distress call from the walkie and must return Yoshi immediately. Running quickly into the facility and Yoshi doesn't mind, running next to the handler entering the building and kennel quickly. 06/10/25: Yoshi is jumping up at the front of kennel excitedly as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walks on a loose leash to the play yard. Yoshi is switched to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He is social with handler throughout his time in the yard and does jump up onto handler repeatedly but is easily redirected with tossed treats. Yoshi will chase tossed toys but does not engage with them further. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 06/03/25: Yoshi greets the handler lying by his kennel door. When the handler goes to open the door, Yoshi will get up and stands on the kennel door. The handler will wait for him to get down before leashing. Yoshi is easily leashed and escorted out of the care center and to the play yards when on leash Yoshi will walk a head of the handler with a soft frame. Yoshi will solicit attention from the handler standing on them. Yoshi will allow petting on Yoush's head, muzzle and next. Yosh is escorted back to the care center where Yoshi is kenneled and safely secured.
Summary (7):: 05/24/25 (reassessment): Yoshi is lying, curled in on himself, in the middle of kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and as kennel door is opened, immediately bolts out of kennel and pulls hard forward. He is walked to the Canine Behavior Office where he is slowly clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Yoshi startles easily at any loud noises or movements and will flinch and skitter away. He warms to handlers throughout his time in the room and will approach, placing his front paws into their laps to solicit petting, but remains conflicted and will become slightly tense. Handlers will toss treats intermittently to help him create distance. After assessment, Yoshi is returned to kennel safely. 05/21/25 (PG) Yoshi is sitting neutrally in kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out to the play yard. Yoshi will exit his kennel and quickly whip around to hard stare a particular dog in their crate before being rushed out of the kennel room. Yoshi is taken up the C staircase where he will climb the steps quickly. Yoshi will display a looser frame while slightly pulling his way to the play yard. He will enter and immediately begin to explore. (See BA in Dog-to-Dog section for insight). Yoshi is returned to kennel, where he will enter the facility as well as his kennel with no issue. 05/20/25 (assessment): Yoshi is standing in the middle of crate with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is easily leashed, becoming tense and trembling upon exit. Yoshi is walked to the Canine Behavior Office where he is slowly collared, clipped to a drag lead, and free to explore the space. He flinches and becomes spooked with even slight movements near him. Yoshi will pace the room and whine, slowly approach handlers and place his paws onto their laps but maintains a tense frame throughout. He will eat high value treats offered to him. When attempting to position for handling portion of assessment, he will actively avoid assessor and positions his body out of reach. Due to his level of discomfort, a handling assessment is not completed at this time. 05/18/25 (Assessment Note): Yoshi is lying down in his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He runs out of the kennel while trembling and is escorted to the assessment room. While in the room, Yoshi takes treats gently from the handler’s hand but continues to tremble and appears spooked by any sudden movements. See behavior assessment for more information. Yoshi is returned to his kennel safely with no issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Yoshi Potential challenges, we recommend he is placed in an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partnerPlace with a New Hope partner: Yoshi came into he care center as a stray, so his behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. Yoshi has not adjusted to the care center environment. In a quieter environment, He readily engages with handlers, accepts handling, and is responsive to training games like LATTE rotations and the up-down game when provided with decompression opportunities. Yoshi enjoys enrichment and can be successfully redirected with toys or treats during sessions in quiet environments. However, he exhibits a low threshold for arousal, particularly around transitions in and out of his kennel, where he has been observed to leash bite, kennel fight, and attempt to redirect onto handlers. Yoshi would benefit from placement with a New Hope partner equipped to support dogs with arousal regulation needs. A home or setting that can provide consistent structure, positive reinforcement-based training, and ongoing decompression opportunities will be key to helping him succeed.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Yoshi demonstrates a mix of fear-based responses and touch sensitivity, particularly during initial handling attempts. While he was calm during transport, he became highly reactive when officers attempted to leash him, requiring the use of a control pole. At intake, staff were able to leash him through a window and walk him in without signs of aggression, though he remained fearful. During his medical exam, Yoshi was nervous but food-motivated and tolerant overall, despite initially showing his teeth in response to restraint and sudden movements. These behaviors suggest a need for slow, low-pressure handling, positive reinforcement, and desensitization to touch and restraint to build trust and reduce the risk of defensive aggression. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Low threshold for arousal/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Yoshi was reported to kennel fight in the care center when exiting kennel. he will thrashing, attempts to redirect onto a staff member when leaving the kennel room. Yoshi was also reported to leash bite a bit before exiting the building Yoshi may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Leash Biting: Yoshi is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash.
