Animal Profile

Chewy

Hello, my name is Chewy. My animal id is #148896. I am a female tortoiseshell cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 9 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 9/16/2023.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Chewy is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has warmed up when staff is using treats to build a positive association. However, due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a stress cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home! The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats or dogs.I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/4/22 Extremely fearful and stressed. Crouched down, flattens ears, lunges forward and spits upon approach. Growls when reaching close and swats multiple times and bites tool when trying to rearrange her kennel space. Not interested in attention at all. She stands her ground and does not prefer to hide. She also does not retreat nor was she able to be coaxed to the side kennel. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 9/8/22 No more hissing, growling, lunging! Lying down on top of den relaxed. Softly meows when spoken to and opening the door. Eagerly accepts treats offered and is easily coaxed to climb down with more treats. When reaching close to pet with the scratcher tool, she crouches down, flattens her ears, swats at the tool, and retreats to the side kennel. Chewy has been observed to head bunt the door and roll over on her side for more treats and attention. She will come to you when she is ready for petting. Much improvement! 9/9/22 Resting by the front, meowing attention when spoken softly to. Alert with normal shape eyes. She is curious, looking around. Head bunts the hand when petted. Leans onto her side throughout the interaction and ate offered treats. Improved after a few days at the care center. 9/10/22 I think improvement is due to being in heat. She came forward, slightly apprehensive but enjoyed petting and then postured as if she is in heat with a low to the ground belly and rear legs almost doing the "bunny kick". 9/13/22 Lying on top of den with a low posture and ears flattened against her head. She emits a soft meow when coaxed, but looks around with dilated eyes. She flinches when I open the door, leans away, and then starts to growl. I offered her chicken but she is too wary of my movements so I closed the door and left her alone. Very stressed. 9/27/22 Resting with head high on top of her den. Alert with soft eyes. When spoken softly to she quickly engaged the front. Loose body with tail high. She walks out to explore and was relaxed when placing back into the cage. Head bunts and body leans into hand when petted. Purred throughout the interaction. Much improvement! 10/02/22 Perched on top of den and meows when spoken to. She leans forward to sniff the scratcher tool and leaned in for pets! I offered treats each time she allowed pets and sometimes she'll eat, but sometimes she seems more interested in head rubs. I was careful to let her do all the work. She nipped once with moderate pressure, but didn't display any other reaction and continued to accept gentle attention. 1/3/23 At front of shelf lying down in loaf position, with soft body and eyes. Climbs down to greet me and eagerly accepts treats offered. Head bunts for petting and leans in for cheek rubs. Allowed to walk out of kennel and curiously explores surroundings. Rubs her face and body against my legs. Flicks tail and enjoys petting on head, cheeks, and body. Easily picked up and returned. -----continued in GAN-----

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Talkative

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Demanding,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Chewy solicits petting and attention, but after a one or two soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and growl at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Chewy becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. For information on petting-induced aggression, see this article: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist/cat-behavior/petting-induced-aggression

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home,Single-pet home

Recommendations comments:: Reported not to like children, cats, or dogs. No specific details on how Chewy behaved around them.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Chewy was meowing loudly standing at the front of her kennel as she saw the assessor approach with treats. Once she finished eating them, she reached out of the bars for more. When the scratch tool was presented to her slowly, her ears flattened and she lip-licked. She avoided pets by jumping to the top of her den. As the assessor moved the scratch tool closer, Chewy hissed and quickly escalated to growl and repeatedly swat. Pickup wasn't attempted. Initially Chewy solicits attention and accepts petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to previous owners' notes we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced adult-only single-pet home.
