Animal Profile

Spring Roll

Hello, my name is Spring Roll. My animal id is #235550. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/29/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Spring Roll was brought into the Care Center as a Stray with unknown history. Initially Spring Roll was been highly fearful and was observed snapping during intake. With time, Spring Roll was observed to become more social with staff, soliciting contact, and became treat motivated. Recently Spring Roll has become difficult to handle safely due to escalating fearful-defensive behaviors. On walks, when returning to kennel Spring Roll is consistently baulking and pancakes when returning to kennel. Treats and coaxing are ineffective to lure her forward, and Spring Roll will thrash when leash pressure is applied. When staff try to carry her back to kennel, Spring Roll has escalated to snapping at handlers. Medically, Spring Roll is apparently healthy.

Spring Roll was brought in as a stray, so her behavior history in a home is unknown. She has been highly fearful in the Care Center and was observed snapping during intake. Spring has warmed up to select staff, accepting contact and at times is treat motivated. On walks, when returning to kennel Spring Roll is noted thrash and pancake if pressured to move. When handler's attempt to carry her into kennel, she has escalated to snapping toward handlers. We recommend placement through a New Hope partner in an experienced, adult-only home that can manage her behavior using positive reinforcement. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

While outside Spring Roll solicits social interaction from handler, jumping lightly on them and allowing pets around her head and body. Spring Roll walks with handler stopping intermittently to sniff spots on the street. She passes people on the street without issue and when seeing dogs shows minimal reaction. After walking for a while she is brought back inside and her leash is clipped before she is walked back to kennel. She cowers slightly before she reaches the kennel but when called relaxes and walks into kennel, interaction is ended shortly after. 10/1/25: Spring Roll is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for her walk. During the walk she pulls lightly and walks slightly in front of handler. When exiting the driveway Spring Roll looks to handler with a loose wiggly body and wagging tail and play bows a few times. She is muscled into kennel. 9/28/25: Spring Roll is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and is taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she would walk ahead with a loose body and would approach the handler for treats. She hade no reactions to dogs or people. She begins to baulk to the ground on the way back to her kennel. She is able to continue walking when the handler jogs her to to kennel and she has to be muscled inside. 9/27/25: Upon returning, Spring Roll plants her feet, refusing to walk in the room. She presents a tense body when another handler gently places a bellyband under her. The handler who has her in leash gave her treats, but she refused to take her. Both handlers walked her into her kennel, and once she is inside, Spring Roll head whips towards the belly band.

She is easily leashed and removed from kennel to be taken to the treat for a walk. She mildly pulls and does not react to people or dogs passing by. She gently and social jumps on handler, placing her front paws on their hips. She accepts pets and is lured back down to the ground with a treat. She returns back to the care centers. As she is exits the elevator she baulks and begins to crouch. Handler stoops down and taps on the floor gently and she continues moving forward while lip licking and with a rapid low tail wag. She slowly makes her way to the front of the room and begins to baulk, retreat, and pancake. Pressure on the leash is used and she briefly/mildly thrashes backwards. Secondary handler uses a leash as a belly band, Spring Roll continues to resist and is dragged to the kennel. When placed in the kennel he whips around and snaps at the leashes. Interaction is ended. 9/24/25: It is reported that Spring Roll has been persistently baulking outside of the kennel room when being returned to kennel. Handlers have been picking up Spring Roll and carrying them into kennel. When in kennel her behavior begins to escalate. She comes out without issue and walked to the street. On the street he zig zags back and forth in front and behind handler, attempting to keep her distance. When returning to kennel, she tries to walk in the opposite direction, handler walks with her a bit, not forcing her to kennel. She stands then will walks closer to the kennel before stopping and turning away. This is repeated a few times before she gets to his kennel. She stands in front of it and does not go in. Handler muscles her into kennel. 8/31/25: Spring Roll is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body when handler approaches. She is aloof with the handler and sniffs some spots on the ground. Treats are offered to her and she sniffs but does not take them. Spring Roll is brought into a pen and handler sits on the bench. She avoids the handler, sniffing a corner. Handler then walks her to the street for a brief walk. She does not relieve herself and will stare at various dogs across the street. Handler walks her back to the shelter and she begins to slow down, trying to walk behind the handler. Spring Roll is brought into the building and walks down the hallway. She immediately stops and starts to thrash. Handler stops and loosens the tension and tosses a few treats. These are not successful. Handler applies gentle tension and she takes a few steps. Spring Roll eventually walks all the way to the entrance to the kennel room where she plants refusing to move further. Handler has to slowly muscle her into kennel. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Spring Roll so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Spring Rolls' behavior in the Care Centers, Spring Roll should go to a home with older children. Spring Roll has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Spring Roll is fearful in the Care Centers and was observed to snapped during her intake. Throughout their stay in the care center Spring Roll has remained fearful and escalates to snapping at handlers hands when returning to kennel. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Spring Roll associate new people with things she likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
