Animal Profile

Misu

Hello, my name is Misu. My animal id is #199446. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 6 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/8/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive to other animals.

Misu is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of [petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation, etc.]. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

My foster writes:: Misu is a cat with a mind of her own. She doesn't like to be petted but always walks beside you and sleeps in your bedsheets. She sometimes gets sassy and feels she's the owner of your house, but this is due to the insecurity and confidence that formed in her previous life. She appears in soft places like your bed and couch, quietly observing you while keeping her distance. She needs a patient, loving family member to make her realize that she can be safe and loved while staying with people. My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. Misu tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents who are well counseled on petting induced aggression. A volunteer writes: We take our friends at their best and also at their not that best. Of course, we know we're all entitled to feel a bit down at times, and those down times are objectively not the best time to judge, which brings us to Misu's approach to the Care Center. Misu just isn't loving it here. It's not the place for her to shine and sparkle as she's meant to do. And though she's trying and this is perfectly ok, it also means I don't know her as well as I wish I did. Misu politely asked me for some time and space when I visited but tried to explain she's a little unsure about things at the moment. Misu is trying her best to find a patient family who will love and welcome her as she is.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9.2.24 Vol. At the front of the kennel, meowing. Eagerly ate chicken and Temptations through the bars and then with the door open. Air batted at my hand when I left it on the floor nearby, and shied away from the scratcher tool and then hissed at it. Briefly enjoyed chasing the laser pointer. Remained at the front of the kennel sniffing the air as I was writing notes nearby. 9/6/24 Vol. Meatloafed in main cage. Put in squeeze treat bowl and she ate quickly, pushing bowl near fingers but hissing if touched. Put in more treats and tried to approach with scratcher tool - she put her mouth on it. Kept tool in cage and Misu resumed eating. Removed tool and tried once more to approach with hand. She hissed and tail started twitching. Ended interaction. 9/15/24 Vol. Misu was in the main condo, sitting up, eyes and ears alert. Misu got very excited when she saw the squeeze up and eagerly licked it through the bars from the tube. However, when I opened the condo door to extend the treat on the tool, she licked it, then hissed and swatted hard at the tool. Ended interaction. 09.16.24 FB04 Misu is showing consistent signs of overstimulation at this time. Misu does not need socialization, these behaviors are likely to continue in a home environment and this is not an indication that Misu is under socialized. They are a very smart and curious cat who may be sensitive to hands-on stimuli. They will need plenty of playtime and mental stimulation in their new home. 9/29/24 Vol. Resting in den but came out to front when I approached. Tail was low while looking around. Moved to other side of the kennel behind the Shoreline cover and crouched in loaf position with tail flicking. Yawned when I pulled back a corner (or hissed silently?) and remained in place. Didn't really respond to sweet talk or slow blinks. Stood and came back to the other side when I opened a bag of treats, but didn't eat any.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Initially, Misu solicits petting and attention but starts to hiss and swat at the assessor after a few gentle strokes. This behavior may indicate petting-induced aggression or overstimulation. Given this reaction, it's recommended that adopters be familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats to ensure interactions are stopped before Misu becomes reactive. Using treats to reward her appropriate responses to physical attention is advised.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to previous adopter returning Misu due to not getting along with resident cat, we recommend homes with no other cats, or a multi-cat home only if the adopter has proven experience with introducing new cats successfully.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Summarized assessment on 9/28/24: Misu was at the front of her space, standing quietly and approaching to sniff treats. She accepted a squeeze-up from the assessor's hand and briefly allowed petting while eating. As she became more comfortable, she tolerated petting consistently during mealtime. However, when the food ran out, she pulled back slightly and began hissing with each pet attempt but did not escalate further. While she has shown improvement since her previous assessment, there remains a risk of her becoming easily provoked to bite or scratch with improper handling. Assessment on 11/2/24: Misu was resting softly but alert upon approach, sitting upright and watching her surroundings. She accepted offered treats and allowed brief petting on her head but quickly hissed and swiped at the scratcher tool. Afterward, she stayed in place, tolerating the presence of humans with the kennel door closed. Misu tolerates brief attention and petting but appears stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents who are well counseled on petting induced aggression.
