Animal Profile

Mishu

Hello, my name is Mishu. My animal id is #220392. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/26/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Mishu is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Mishu is an obese cat with extremely high FAS in shelter. She is not eating well, has vomited a few times, and does not tolerate medical handling attempts to provide supportive care. She has an increased risk of developing hepatic lipidosis with prolonged anorexia due to her obesity. There is no obvious medical cause for her poor appetite and we suspect it is stress related.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/4/25 FB61 Lying in front of kennel, body and face tense. She hisses with flattened ears... she is so cute and fat but very scared. She hisses when offered treats and she does not eat them during our interaction. I spend time blowing bubbles and she watches curiously, ears shifting forward slightly as she watches with wide eyes. After our session ends she vocalizes at me a couple of times. This might be a good sign... her hissing turned to meows. Will continue to attempt to make positive associations. 3/10/25 FB79 Perched up on the top part of her kennel, Mishu has almond eyes and forward ears and she watches me interact in the room with the neighboring cats. I hear her low meow when i open some chicken and she is at the front of the glass with wide eyes; Mishu leans in to eat the chicken that i reached in and placed down for her but when i slowly introduced the pointer tool she very harshly hisses at is and backs away towards the corner of the kennel with slightly tilted ears. She tolerates a pet on the head but hisses once again at the tool when i attempt to pet down her back/body.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: No other cats and adult only home due to previous home notes; PLEASE SEE 'KNOWN HISTORY' ABOVE FOR MORE DETAILS.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of her cubby, Mishu sits with wide eyes and a loose tail when the assessor approaches and speaks to her softly; she hisses through the cubby and her eyes dilate when the door to her kennel is opened and treats are placed down for her which she shows no interest in. Mishu does not tolerate any petting when the assess-a-hand is introduced as she starts to swat and strike the tool repeatedly; she hisses and holds the assess-a-hand down with her paws, fixating on it with dilated eyes and tilted ears waiting for any movement. When the assessor tries to remove the tool she starts to low growl/grumble as she goes in to bite and hold on with her mouth and paws. The assessor used another tool in which she swats at and releases the assess-a-hand but continues to low growl/grumble, swat and strike as well as hiss with a hunched back when the tool is quickly used to pet down her back and around her body. Mishu is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat/scratch/bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
