Yamuhe
Hello, my name is Yamuhe. My animal id is #232575. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/20/2025.
Yamuhe is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Yamuhe is the cat I go home and dream about. Since shelter life is admittedly and understandably not his style, watching him try to piece it all together as best he can breaks my heart. Yamuhe knows he has to work a little harder than everyone else, but he's just asking for a chance and giving him that while he's here with us is the least I can do. A chance for Yamuhe looks like treats and reading to him from my book before he pokes his head out from his den to nuzzle into my hand. Rolling into my arms, snuggling into my face and presenting me with his belly to ask for some soft belly rubs, Yamuhe is a big hearted mush. However, each sound from the hallway, of which there are many, has the unfortunate consequence of immediately sending a scrambling Yamuhe back to his den. This is part of shelter life, but so is the way Yamuhe gathers his strength in his tiny paws, takes a deep breath and prepares to start again. He wants to start again with a family who will see and celebrate all he is and wants to be.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Yamuhe was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. On 7/20/25, the client's grandson was watching TV. The cat became vicious and showing teeth out of nowhere and then the cat went to scratch the child, who later went to the hospital and received stitches on his ears and face.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/01/25 FB61 Lying in cat den upon approach, body tense and head lowered. He slow-blinks as I open the kennel door and he tilts his ears as I lift his den cover. I leave him a treat and he sniffs it while watching me before beginning to eat it. He pauses to focus on the door of the room when he hears noises outside of it and he cannot be coaxed into engaging with me until whoever is outside of the room walks away. He is tolerant of pets on his head and leans in gently. Very sweet boy but it appears as though he is hyper sensitive to the environment at this time. Will continue to build positive associations. He remains in his den for the duration of time I'm in the room and does not leave it even for the treats closest to him. He does roll around with the catnip toy I leave in there though! 8/03/25 Vol Yamuhe was in the den. I lifted the cover and he scooted to the back of the den. I put Temptations into the den but he did not pay any attention to them. I spoke to him and used the scratcher tool to pet him through the den opening. He showed no reaction to it at all. I spoke softly to him and he remained lying down in the den, with his eyes lowered. 8/08/25 FB61 Today he is sniffling in his den, his cheeks big, eyes wide and tail wrapped around his body. He shuffles around as I lift his den cover but he does not retreat and lean away from me. He leans in gently for cheek and head pets. A gentle giant. He does not show interest in treats today (possibly due to his URI) but he does sniff the catnip toy offered curiously. Placement may be in his best interest at this time. He is a large and sensitive boy. 8/13/25 FB58 In his den and can't coax out. When I lift the den cover, he is sitting there big cheeked and pitiful with green eye boogies. He accepts pets with the scratcher tool along his cheeks and leans in slightly but sits and watches me. He remains slightly tense and appears wary of the noises in the room. I place a cage cover on his cage to see if that helps him. I agree, placement may be his best option/ in his best interest.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Yamuhe has a bite/scratch history involving a child (see Known History above for more details). It is possible that there was a loud, sudden noise when the child was watching the television show and/or the child may have gotten excited nearby Yamuhe. There were limited details provided on what specifically triggered Yamuhe.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to fearfulness and bite/scratch history. Counselor discretion is advised.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Yamuhe was lying down on top of the shelf at the back with a tense body and wide eyes. He ignores treats offered and remains calm when petting him on the head. When receiving cheek rubs, he slow blinks but then turns his head away. He remains tense and stands his ground when stroking his back and reaching around his body. When gently pulling him towards the edge of the shelf and briefly picking him up, he struggles and squirms. After placing him back down on the shelf, he curls up, lip licks, and continues to tolerate more petting and attention. Yamuhe tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center and a bite/scratch history, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
