Animal Profile

Omni

Hello, my name is Omni. My animal id is #213102. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/26/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Omni is at risk due to behavioral concerns. In the care center, Omni allows to be petted and takes treats from staff. However, Omni has been observed to body slam her kennel door and hard bark at handlers. Omni also jumps on other staff members, with one instance of her jumping and attempting to mouth a staff members hand. The staff member moved their hand out of the way and Omni mouthed their shirt with hard pressure. Despite our best efforts by offering daily enrichment Omni is having a hard time adjusting to the stress of the environment. Medically, Omni is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Wiggly body wagging tail

Date of initial:: 10/27/2024

Summary:: Head shy, vigilant about noises, allowed all handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: Omni is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Omni.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and low threshold for arousal we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Omni has been observed to become tense and move away from handlers with a toy in their possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Omni's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Omni's previous owner states that she will jump up often in a social manner. During her stay in shelter Omni has been observed to jump up on handlers frequently. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Social Hyperarousal: Omni quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing handlers ankles. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Omni to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Omni should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Omni. Please see handout on Arousal. Fearful: Omni's previous owner states that she is fearful when startled by loud noises. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Omni would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History(Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite history and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Omni has been observed to lunge and growl towards a handler that was holding a cat in a cardboard cat carrier. Omni will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
