Animal Profile

Omni

Hello, my name is Omni. My animal id is #213102. I am a desexed female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 7 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/7/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Omni is at risk due to behavioral concerns in a previous foster home and in the care center. During her past stay in care she was placed in a foster home and on a walk in the park with the foster, Omni initially pulled on the leash but stopped after receiving praise from the foster parent. Omni then fixated on the fosters' white sneakers, grabbed, and shook one off the fosters' foot. Attempts to redirect Omni failed, and the foster had to wrap the leash around a tree to create distance. Although she calmed down, any movement of the fosters' feet caused her to refocus and bark. The incident didn't result in a bite, foster did have a small bruise. After returning from foster care, Omni's behavior deteriorated, showing escalating issues like leash biting and grabbing handlers' sleeves and boots while in care. Medically, Omni is apparently healthy.

Date of intake:: 2/7/2025

Summary:: wiggly body and tail high and wagging.

Date of initial:: 2/8/2025

Summary:: allowed for handling and tasks, enters with loose body, allows for pets, solicits attention

ENERGY LEVEL:: Omni is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Omni.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and low threshold for arousal we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope partner-Omni was surrendered to the shelter as a stray because her original owners left her in the care of a friend/finder and were not able to keep her anymore. The Finder reported that their favorite thing about Omni is that she is happy all the time. During her past stay in care she was placed in a foster home and on a walk in the park with the foster, Omni initially pulled on the leash but stopped after receiving praise from the foster parent (FP). She then fixated on the FP's white sneakers, grabbed, and shook one off the FP's foot. Attempts to redirect her failed, and the FP had to wrap the leash around a tree to create distance. Although she calmed down, any movement of the FP's feet caused her to refocus and bark, resulting in the FP sustaining a bruised ankle. After returning from foster care, Omni's behavior deteriorated, showing escalating issues like leash biting and grabbing handlers' sleeves and boots while in care. Due to these concerns, she was placed at risk. Omni is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Other,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Omni has been observed to become tense and move away from handlers with a toy in their possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Omni's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Omni's previous owner states that she will jump up often in a social manner. During her stay in shelter Omni has been observed to jump up on handlers frequently. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Social Hyperarousal: Omni quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mouthing handlers ankles. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Omni to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. Omni should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Omni. Please see handout on Arousal. Fearful: Omni's previous owner states that she is fearful when startled by loud noises. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Omni would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite History(Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite history and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Omni has been observed to lunge and growl towards a handler that was holding a cat in a cardboard cat carrier. Omni will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Other:During a walk in the park, Omni initially pulled on the leash but stopped after receiving praise from the foster parent (FP). She then fixated on the FP's white sneakers, grabbed, and shook one off the FP’s foot. Attempts to redirect her failed, and the FP had to wrap the leash around a tree to create distance. Although she calmed down, any movement of the FP’s feet caused her to refocus and bark, resulting in the FP sustaining a bruised ankle.
