Animal Profile

Appletini

Hello, my name is Appletini . My animal id is #238130. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/30/2025.

Appletini is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Appletini arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Appletini was noted be loose bodied and social with staff during his medical exam. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Appletini is showing concerning deterioration while in kennel. Recently Appletini has been observed to be at the front of his kennel consistently barking with part of his muzzle covered in blood. Outside of kennel Appletini is noted to be treat motivated and solicit petting from handlers. Medically, he is noted to be underweight and being treated for diarrhea.

Brought in by the NYPD 47th Precinct after a Good Samaritan drop-off, Appletini arrived as a stray with no known history. In care, he's shown us a sweet, people-seeking side-leaning in for pets, offering polite paw shakes-and an energetic, curious streak that sometimes bubbles over on leash. **My Ideal Home** An experienced, adult-only home that can provide structure, consistency, and positive-reinforcement training. Appletini will thrive with a calm environment, clear routines, and enrichment like sniff walks, puzzle feeders, and long-lasting chews to help him settle and shine. **Good with Kids?** Recommended no children under 13 due to on-leash reactivity and jumpy, social greetings. **Good with Other Pets?** Recommended single-pet home. In the kennel room and on walks, he has pulled hard toward other dogs and can be difficult to redirect. We also recommend no dog parks. **Fun Facts** * Knows "sit" and shakes with both paws * Leans in for affection and enjoys hanging near his person * Often potties promptly outside * Toy fan-has been seen contentedly chewing in his kennel Ready to help Appletini find his people? Come meet this handsome, paw-shaking gent and see if he's the match for you. A Volunteer Wrote: We so wish we could whisper in gorgeous Appletini's ear, "You're the most amazingly friendly, easygoing dog the second you're out of your kennel! Couldn't you please try to act like it IN the kennel and come out calmly?" Alas, he doesn't understand, so we will just tell you that in the back or on the street, this beautiful boy is all heart and snuggles and affection, showing off his basic commands (paw! He loves giving paw!) He loves being pet, he loves getting treats, and he loves being showered with all the attention he deserves-which is an endless amount. Please come meet him and give him a cage-free life filled with joy for you both!

Summary (5):: 11/02/25: Appletini is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and exits kennel following handler down the stairs and out to the street for his walk. While outside he pulls mildly and stops to sniff and relieve himself. Appletini passes people on the street without issue and and walks uneventfully with handler for a while. After walking for a bit he is brought back inside, he waits at the side of the elevator and greets two staff members with a wagging tail and neutral body, he accepts a treat offered from them and allows handler to clip his leash before being brought back to kennel and returning without issue.

Summary (6):: 10/27/25 (late): Appletini is observed to be at the front of kennel barking persistently while his side of his snout is covered in blood. Kennel bars covered in drool and blood. 10/26/25: Appletini is observed to be at the front of the kennel barking persistently while his muzzle is covered in blood 10/18/25: Appletini is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is comfortable taking treats and is able to be leashed with ease. He pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull towards the sides of the sidewalk to stop at each tree to sniff and mark his territory. He is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats and had no reactions to dogs or people. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 10/10/25: Appletini is standing quietly at front of kennel with neutral, soft body as handler approaches. Appletini takes treat offered through kennel door, is easily leashed. Appletini exits with minimal pulling, is soft-neutral bodied. On side-walk Appletini walks with loose leash, is social with handler, allows gentle petting with soft body, takes treats from handler's hand gently. A skate-board passes within 10 feet, Appletini does not react. Appletini sees a MOP passing on same side of side walk, attempts to greet with soft body and wagging tail. Appletini maintains soft body and is easily walked back to kennel without issue, takes treats dropped into kennel. 10/3/25: As handler approaches the kennel, Appletini is sitting towards the front of his kennel. She would then stand up and would slightly paw at the door. He is then easily leashed and removed from his kennel with ease. Once removed, he would walk alongside the handler, watching the dogs in the pop-up crates with a stiff and slightly tense body. He would easily walk with the handler with mild leash pressure, walking ahead. He is then taken to the play-yard where he would relieve himself with ease and turn towards the handler to jump on them, soliciting pets. Appletini would walk around the yard and continue his walk with no issue. He would spot a dog but is easily redirected with a squeaker sound. He is then placed on a drag leash and would lie near the handler; this went on for a few minutes, and shortly after, he is then leashed, clipped, and returned to his kennel with no issue

Summary (7):: 10/2/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Appletini pulls toward birds and people in a curious manner while on walks. 10/2/25: ACS report that Appletini is dog reactive. He will pull hard towards other dogs while on leash and in the kennel room. When walking past other kennel rooms Appletini will pulls hard towards the other dogs. Even after moving away Appletini continues to turn around and pull hard towards the other dog. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. 10/1/25: Appletini is lying down in the back of his kennel, chewing on a toy as the handler approaches. Once the handler unlocks the kennel, Appletini stands up and approaches the front with a loose, wiggly body. The handler is easily leashed and brought out of the kennel. He immediately relieves himself once he is outside. Another dog walks nearby, but Appletini does not react. After crossing the street, Appletini slightly pulls towards one passerby. During the street walks, Appletini walks ahead of the handler with little tension on the leash. He occasionally stops to sniff around and relieve himself. As two passersby walk past, Appletini socially jumps onto the handler and receives pets from them. He sniffs at the handler's treat pouch, and as the handler is taking a treat out, Appletini pulls towards a person walking past, scaring them. He presents a loose body afterwards. The same person walks past again, and as the handler speaks to them, Appletini does not pay attention to them anymore. The handler gives him the sit command, but he does not follow it. Before walking into the building, another dog walks past and Appletini pulls towards them as they walk away. Appletini is brought in for his assessment (SEE ASSESSMENT NOTES). The handler clips their leash and tosses treats into the kennel so Appletini enters.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Appletini so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: On Leash Reactivity: Appletini has been observed to pull hard towards other dogs while in the kennel room and while on leash. Even after moving away Appletini continues to turn around to pull towards the stimuli. Appletini will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
