I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/6/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLodi is at risk for behavior reasons. Lodi was living in a busy environment and escalated to biting several times. None of the bites broke the skin. At times, she was in possession of a high value item when she has escalated to biting. She has been highly fearful in care. Medically, she is currently in heat but otherwise a healthy dog.

She was previously living in a busy environment and has escalated to biting in the past. None of the bites have broken the skin, and the behavior may be related to fear and/or resource guarding. Lodi will benefit from a calm, low-stress environment, consistent management, and a partner experienced in working with fearful dogs and safely addressing potential guarding behaviors. Her placement should prioritize safety, allowing her time and space to decompress and build trust at her own pace.

Summary:: Due to multiple bite history, Lodi is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: Lodi prefers contact on her own terms and spends most of her time in the kitchen. She allows her owner or family to bathe and brush her. She goes on walks 3–4 times per day for about 10 minutes each and has mild to moderate pulling on the leash. She is crate-trained but does not do well in the crate, where she typically spends about two hours in a large-breed crate. Lodi has never been in a car. She knows the cues “sit,” “paw,” and “down.” Her previous owner’s favorite things about her are unknown. Her favorite toy is a rubber bone.
Summary (7):: 10/11 PM Walk: Lodi is lying curled up in her kuranda bed on approach. Staff member slides her dinner bowl under the door to her second kennel. She gets up and hesitates a little before quickly walking through the transfer door to eat. Staff praises her and closes the transfer door and cleans her first kennel while she eats. Staff notices that she has pushed her dinner bowl half out of the door, and uses a toy to gently nudge it fully into the kennel. She looks briefly at staff as she continues eating. When staff reopens the transfer door, she returns to her first kennel, sitting on a blanket on the floor near the front. Staff squats down and offers her milk-bone treats through the door. She takes them with a soft mouth and sets them down on the linens, but a few minutes later staff sees her eating them. 10/11 AM Walk: Lodi is laying on her kuranda bed on approach. A piece of sausage is tossed towards her and she get up following a trail closer to kennel front. She accepts a piece gently from staff members hand and remains at kennel front with a low head and relaxed face. 10/8: Lodi has some food in the front of her kennel untouched. Handler opens the kennel door and she lowers her head and hard barks. She is left alone to decompress. 10.7.26 Lodi is lying down on her bed when approached. She is easily leashed and slowly walks out of the kennel and is taken for a walk. She walks with a tense body, and balks occasionally through the walk. She flinches as staff clips her leash but is easily walked into her kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to escalating to biting, we recommend Lodi go to an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Lodi finds treats (bones, rawhides, etc.) of a high value. She will growl or hard bark. We recommend Lodi be left alone when eating. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Lodi’s mouth. Should you have to remove something from her, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. ? Handling/touch sensitivity: Lodi is not comfortable with certain handling. She is reported to lunge if held or restrained, bark or growl if pulled off of furniture. She has escalated to hard barking at staff when they attempt to leash. Please see handout on Handling Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (human): Lodi has escalated to biting over multiple reasons. Lodi has reported resource guarding and may have an item of high value in her possession when approached, escalating to biting but not breaking the skin. It is reported she has bitten on approach, walking past, or if individuals attempt to enter the room. This is a learned behavior which is likely to repeat itself without careful management. Positive reinforcement training should focus on desensitizing the dog to triggers and teaching alternative behaviors; punishment should always be avoided. Please see the handout on Multiple Bite History and Risk of Future Aggression. ? Anxiety: Lodi appears anxious at the care center, hiding in the back of her kennel. The finders reported she was anxious in their care as well, pacing, panting, unable to settle. If Lodi displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety.??
