Summary (6):: 4/14/26: Zeus Atticus is sitting quietly in his pop-up crate. Handler approaches the crate and he demand barks. Handler unlocks the crate and Zeus is easily leashed. He pulls moderately out down the hall. When there is leash pressure from the pulling Zeus will turn around and bite the leash. He is taken downstairs and pulls into the driveway to relieve himself. Handler clips a leash to his harness without issue and he walks out to the street. Once crossing the threshold, Zeus turns and begins leash biting. He jumps towards the handler and grabs the leash and begins to pull it down. Handler crosses the street and he begins to hold onto the leash attached to his harness and gnaw it. Handler continues walking as Zeus holds the leash. Treats are tossed and it redirects him briefly, he then returns back to leash biting. He stops taking treats. Zeus then begins to vocalize loudly, growling and shaking the leash as he pulls it. He bites up the leash becoming close to the handler's hand. Handler tries to re-leash him and it becomes caught in his mouth. He continues to bite the leash and pull it. Zeus Atticus is muscled back towards the shelter as he is still stopping, pulling the leash and growling. Another leash is placed over him and the original leash he is wearing is removed. Once entering the building, Zeus stops leash biting. He is then walked back to kennel and is returned without further issue. 4/13/26: It is reported that Zeus is jumping up, biting, and tugging on the leash while growling. This behavior is not able to be redirected. The handler used their pet corrector and this did not redirect the behavior.

Summary (7):: 4/3/26: Zeus Atticus is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body; he is presented a treat, doesn't show interest/ The handler leashes and brings Zeus out of the kennel. On the street, Zeus walks ahead with moderate leash tension, briefly pulling hard at times. He doesn't react to any dogs or passersby. Zeus is social with the handler; he presents a wiggly body as they speak to and pet him and he jumps on them with a wiggly body to solicit pets. The handler brings Zeus inside for his assessments (see notes). As they walk him to the room, Zeus slightly baulks outside; the handler then jogs him into the room and adds a little leash tension to return Zeus into kennel. 4/2/26: It is reported via the whiteboard that Zeus is an extreme puller and needs harness. 6/26/25: It is reported that Zeus Atticus FKA Lil Bevel will mouth the leash. 6/23/25:Zeus Atticus FKA Lil Bevel is at the front of the crate barking and with a wagging tail. Handler presents the leash and he turns his head and mouths it lightly. Lil Bevel was still successfully leashed despite this. Handler takes him out and he attempts to bite the leash lightly while the handler clips the leash to his harness. He pulls very hard downstairs and towards the street. He walks ahead of the handler running and pulling hard. He pulls back into the building and is brought to the backyard. Handler places him on a drag leash and tries to engage in the pool with him. He avoids the water but will approach the handler with a soft body and wagging tail. Rubbing along their legs and allowing petting on his head and back. After his time outside, the leash is then clipped back onto the harness. Lil Bevel then turns and mouths the leash lightly, treats are tossed to redirect and it is successful. Lil Bevel then pulls hard back into the building and is returned to his crate without issue. 6/4/25: Zeus Atticus FKA Lil Bevel is at the front of the kennel with a soft, wiggly body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly out of the room. Lil Bevel is brought to the street where he pulls hard. He relieves himself and will approach the handler with a soft body and wagging tail. He takes treats offered gently. Lil Bevel is brought to the assessment room where he greets the assessor with a loose and wiggly body, he allows collaring. After his assessment he is returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary:: Allowed all medical handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Zeus Atticus so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to his rope reactivity, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Zeus' previous owner states that he will have accidents in the home a couple times a month. Zeus is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Destructive Behavior: Zeus' previous owner states that he will have destructive behaviors in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Zeus will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Leash Biting: During his previous stay Zeus Atticus FKA Lil Bevel was observed to mouth the leash. During his current stay Zeus has been observed to be highly rope reactive. Noted to jump up, bite, tug on the leash while growling. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Leash Pulling: Zeus' previous owner states that he will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
