Luscious
Hello, my name is Luscious. My animal id is #215593. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/27/2024.
Luscious is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray and allowed all handling a soft, wiggly body. Upon entering his kennel he was reported to thrash. Throughout his stay at the care centers he has remained social with handlers and is highly food motivated. However, it has been reported that Luscious will react towards dogs and birds, fixating, pulling very hard, and jumping towards them. Recently he has started to display deterioration behavior such as pawing at his water bowl, intensely leash biting, and biting and release a handlers pants. Medically, Luscious is healthy.

There is an adorable video of me on social media! Click here to experience the cuteness! Meet Luscious! Luscious is a 1-year-old large mixed breed who was found running on the 155th St Bridge, darting through traffic. Thankfully, a kind rescuer coaxed him into safety and brought him to us. Now, he's looking for a dedicated adopter who can provide him with structure, training, and lots of love! My Ideal Home Luscious is an energetic and excitable dog who will thrive in a home with experienced adopters who can provide him with consistent training and enrichment. He needs a patient, adult-only household that will help him build confidence and positive behaviors. Good with Kids? No-due to his fearful behavior and on-leash reactivity, he is best suited for a home without children. Good with Other Dogs? Luscious has displayed on-leash reactivity and barrier frustration when seeing other dogs but has also had neutral interactions in the yard. He will need careful introductions to other dogs and positive reinforcement training to help him feel more comfortable. Good with Cats? Unknown-he has not been tested with cats. Leash Manners Luscious pulls moderately on the leash and can be reactive toward other dogs when restrained. A front-clip harness and reward-based training will help manage this behavior. Overall Health Luscious is in good health! He was recently neutered and has fully recovered. He previously had mild kennel stress and a respiratory infection but has since been treated and is now doing well. Behavior Determination Level 3 (Experienced Adopters Only) - Luscious is a highly social and affectionate dog but needs training to work on his impulse control, leash reactivity, and barrier frustration. He is best suited for a home that will provide slow introductions to new situations and reinforce positive behaviors. Fun Fact Luscious loves treats, especially cheese! He's also featured in an adorable video on our social media-check it out to see his goofy, lovable personality in action!

Summary (6):: 3/29/25: Luscious is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose wiggly body and wagging tail. He then begins to jump up at the door as the handler is unlocking it. He is able be leashed while being distracted with treats. The handler tosses treat down on the ground on the way out of his kennel room to distract him from pulling towards the dogs in kennel. He pulled hard and would jump on his hind legs on the way downstairs for a walk. He had no reaction to the pop crate that were passed. On the walk, he would pull hard ahead to explore and was comfortable siting in front of the handles to receive treats. On the way back to kennel, he pulled hard on the way upstairs and tried to pull towards the dogs in kennels. He is able to enter his kennel with ease. 3/28/25: It was reported by staff that Luscious will cage fight on the way out of the kennel room. Once in the hall he will turn to handler, jump up and bite handler clothing in the torso area. Handler moved the leash away from Luscious and in the process Luscious missed the leash, biting and releasing the handlers pants in the process.
Summary (7):: 3/5/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Luscious will fixate on small dogs while out on a walk. 2/22/25: It was reported by staff that Luscious will vocalize and fixate on dogs. 2/16/25: Luscious is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He begins to paw the kennel door, whilst standing on his hinds legs as handler unlocks kennel. He attempts to mouth the leash but handler removes rope before he can leash bite. Handler uses treat as a lure to successfully leash him. He is removed from kennel and he pulls very hard as he is taken to the yard for a walk. In the yard he has a soft and bouncy body, he chases and reacts to pigeons, and will become tense with a high, stiff tail when sniffing the dog in the neighboring pen. Handler is able to recall him with ease using treats, he is highly food motivated. Luscious will approach and be cued into a sit, he is rewarded for the increasing duration of his sit. He will rarely look away, and when he does, it is brief and he he returns his gaze back to handler. He will also occasionally jump up on handler, but is redirected back into a sit. Luscious is leashed and returned to kennel. He is given a plush to which he immediately engages with as interaction ends. 2/7/25: It was reported by staff that Luscious is bird reactive, jumping up as they fly by. 2/1/25: It was reported by staff that Luscious will paw at his water bowl when the room is busy/active. 12/31/24: ACS report that Luscious will pull towards other dogs while vocalizing. When jumping up on a fence that separates him from another dog Luscious has been observed to bite the fence. 12/14/24: Luscious is standing at the front of his kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He is leashed using a treat as a lure. He is soft with wagging tail throughout the walk on the street. He seeks handler attention by checking in and sitting for treats. He allows for some petting along his back. He returns to kennel without issue. 12/5/24(late entry): Luscious was observed to be biting the kennel bars. 11/29/24: Luscious is standing in the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and brought to the street for his walk. During his walk he does not pull and walks past people on the street without issue. While walking he spots a dog ahead of him, but does not initially react to them. Only when the dog gets closer does Luscious begin pulling towards the other dog, he is redirected with a squeaker and handler crosses the street with him. Luscious uses the bathroom outside and stops often to sniff spots on the street. He is then brought back to the building and when passing staff sitting in front of computers he stops to pull towards them briefly with a wagging tail, handler keeps him away. He is clipped before returning to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Luscious so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Luscious has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Luscious has been observed to escalate to thrashing on leash when fearful. It is important to always go slow and give Lucious the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Luscious would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Lucious has been observed to pull towards other dogs while vocalizing when on leash. In the yard Lucious has been observed to bite the fence when reacting towards other dogs. Lucious will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Lucious has been observed to jump up and bite the leash. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
