Animal Profile

Nevaeh

Hello, my name is Nevaeh . My animal id is #221004. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/21/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Nevaeh is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Nevaeh is struggling in the care center despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. In kennel Nevaeh will jump up at the glass of her kennel, panting heavily and smearing feces due her constant rebounding. Nevaeh has been also kennel fighting with neighboring dogs when leaving kennel, attempting to redirect onto staff members making it difficult to walk her safely. Medically, Nevaeh is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Nevaeh is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Neveah arrived at the QUACC as a stray after good Samaritan found her on a mattress in an alleyway. Nevaeh is deteriorating in the care center despite all efforts to manage her stress. In her kennel, she repeatedly rebounds off the glass, panting heavily, and smearing feces due to her constant movement. When exiting her kennel, she actively engages in barrier aggression with neighboring dogs, escalating to the point of attempting to redirect onto staff, making safe handling increasingly difficult. Neveah is social with staff, but struggling in the care center environment. As a result, we recommend she is placed with one of our New Hope Partners. A volunteer writes: Nevaeh has been struggling in a shelter environment, but when we go for walks, she's a very different pup! When I call her over, she gladly comes right up to me, doing soft wiggly dances with her tail wagging back and forth. She's not partial to what kind of attention I give her - ear scratches, cheek-rubs, butt scratches, or long slow pets along her back and sides...she's so happy to indulge in all of it. When I ask her to sit, she quickly complies and I thank her with a few yummy treats, which she gently takes from my hand. Not only is Nevaeh sweet and affectionate, she's really cute too! As we walk through the hallway, if there's a toy lying on the floor, she'll scoop it up and carry it on her walk. But no worries if she doesn't find one - I always offer her a nice plushy toy when she's back in her kennel, which she excitedly accepts, then hurries over to her bed so she can start playing with it. Even in this stressful environment, Nevaeh is still a big lovebug and I really think she'll just blossom in a kind, loving home.

Date of assessment:: 3/15/2025

Summary:: 3/15/25: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Mild Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: None Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Explores room- Neutral body, sniffs around room Call over: Readily approach- neutral body Sociability comments: Handling Soft handling: Allowed- neutral body Exuberant handling: Allowed- neutral body Handling comments: Arousal Jog: Follow- Distracted Arousal comments: Knock: Approaches- neutral body Knock Comments: Toy: Grips walks away, stiff Toy comments: 2/23/25: Another attempt at a handling assessment was attempted. But Nevaeh remains uncomfortable and avoidant of handlers. She continues to favor her paw and begins to pace the room while seeking exit. Due to her behavior, she is returned to her kennel and a handling could not be conducted. 2/22/25: A handling assessment was attempted but Nevaeh becomes aroused and uncomfortable during the interaction with handlers. She alternates between favoring and chewing on one of her paws, but maintained a tense body, wide red eyes, panting, and unable to settle. Due to her discomfort, attempts are suspended.

Summary:: Although Nevaeh entered the facility as a stray, there is information we were provided. Nevaeh has no experience with familiar dogs, and she will bark and growl at unfamiliar dogs. 03/17/25 Nevaeh is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Nevaeh doesn't greet the novel female dog, she slowly approaches the gate with a tense, square body. The novel female dog will bare her teeth and lunge for the gate and at this point, Nevaeh does the same. Nevaeh displays a high flagging tail, snarling, muzzle punching the gate. The handler in her pen moves her away, creating distance from the gate. Nevaeh is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 02/27/25: When off leash at the Care Center Nevaeh is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Nevaeh approaches hard pulling to the gate with a forward frame. Nevaeh gets into a prey bow position before attempting to chase the novel male along the gate line, growling. As the novel male walks away from the gate Nevaeh escalates from growling to hard barking. When the handler attempts to guide Nevaeh away from the gate she pulls harder towards the gate and continues to bark. Due to Nevaeh's reactivity a face to face greet was not conducted. 02/23/25 Nevaeh is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Nevaeh will immediately lunge towards the gate in which the novel female dog stood, hard barking and snarling. She is moved away quickly and returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (5):: 03/26/25 (trainer note): Neveah is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose body. She is easily leashed and walked to the behavior office. She explores the room with a loose body and engages with the enrichment items. She knows "sit" and "take a breath" She is leashed and returned to kennel with no issue. 03/22/25: it’s reported that Nevaeh will redirect on to handler (did not break skin) when coming back into the room and being guided back to her kennel. Nevaeh exited kennel room through side door but was walked past all of the kennels when returning which is when the redirection occurred.

Summary (6):: 03/22/25 (reported): Reported on "Behavior" section of board: "Very kennel reactive; redirected at handler. Try to walk close to wall as possible or go through ISO/D hallway." No initials so could not gather further information. From note given it appears Neveah was being walked down the length of the hallway rather than out the door next to her kennel. Signage is added to exit out of closest door. 03/22/25: Nevaeh is observed jumping repeatedly onto the glass of her kennel and panting heavily with dilated pupils and a flushed face. The glass of her kennel is smeared in saliva and feces. 03/21/25 (reported): Reported on "Behavior" section of board: "Nipped handler on leg." No intials noted so do not have further context. 03/19/25 (Trainer Note): Nevaeh is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Nevaeh engages readily with the various enrichment, orienting towards the handler between each. Due to her anatomy, take a breath is difficult for her so handler switches to the 123 game instead. Nevaeh participates with intermittent interest and is returned to kennel without issue. 3/15- Volunteer reports that Nevaeh is reported to leash bite but is able to be distracted with a toy. 03/15/25 (reassessment): Nevaeh is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). She is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Nevaeh will approach handlers with a loose frame and places her front paws up onto the desk to investigate it. She grabs a toy from the desk and will stand in between handlers, chewing on it with a loose frame. After assessment, Nevaeh carries her toy back to kennel, returning safely.

Summary (7):: 03/11/25 (Trainer Note): Neveah was at the back of her kennel as the trainer approached, and came forward and was easily leashed and taken to the training room. When inside, Neveah paced around the room and was unable to focus on the enrichment. After some encouragement, she was able to engage with the snuffle mats and puzzle bowls, periodically orienting to the trainer for enrichment. Neveah was easily leashed and taken back to her kennel. 03/04/25 (trainer notes): Nevaeh had a neutral frame and was easily leashed and taken to the behavior office. She was preoccupied with exploring the room with a neutral frame and low tail. Puzzle toys and snuffle matts with treats were used to redirect her attention. At times she would engage with handler and eat the treats, however easily lost interest and would get distracted by her surroundings. She preferred to play with squeaky toys today, and was able to work on "leave it". She was easily leashed and took her toy with her back to her kennel. 02/26/25: (Trainer notes): Nevaeh had a neutral frame and was easily leashed from her kennel. She would pull at the leash when walking past other dogs in crates on the way to the behavior office. When in the room, she took her time exploring and thoroughly sniffed around with a soft frame. Once she was ready, she was able to engage with puzzle toys and took treats softly. Every so often checking in with the other handlers with a loose tail wag. She was leashed and besides mild pulling towards other dogs in crates, she was returned to kennel easily. 02/23/25: Nevaeh is standing at the front of her kennel with a neutral frame as the handler leashes her with ease. She is led to the live room, where a drag leash is placed on her, allowing her to roam freely. Nevaeh engages with the various activities set up for her, including the snuffle mat, the licky mat with cheese, and the pupsicle toy. She remains focused on these enrichment items until there are no more snacks left for her to devour. Once finished, she walks over to the handler, seeking attention and pushing the treat pouch with her nose, asking for more treats. After her session, Nevaeh is returned to her kennel safely with no issues. 02/22/25: Nevaeh is jumping up at the kennel door alert barking as handler approaches. Her kennel is covered in feces and she appears to have been jumping off of the kennel walls. Handler offers treats which Nevaeh shows no interest in. She is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. Nevaeh displays a tense, squared frame, high hackles, a flagged tail as she walks through the kennel room. Once in the office, Nevaeh begins pacing and heavy panting. She is collared and free to explore the space. Nevaeh continues to pace, occasionally stopping to lick her paw pads which appear red and irritated. Due to Nevaeh's level of stress, a handling assessment is not attempted at this time. Nevaeh is leashed and returns to kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Nevaeh is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. No cats: Nevaeh's finder reproted that she barked and growled at the resident cats. Due to this we recommend for her to be placed in a home without cats or other smaller animals. SINGLE-PET HOME/ RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to Nevaeh's reactivity shown while in care and the behaviors reproted by her finder, we recommend she be the only pet in the home as well as not attending dog parks.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Nevaeh's finder reported that she seems to be partially housetrained. Please see handout on House Soiling. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Nevaeh is reported to snaps when woken from sleep and barks or growls when startled. While attempting to conduct handling assessments, Nevaeh is tense, uncomfortable and wary of handlers. While she has not escalated in care, given that she gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Nevaeh, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow her to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety: Nevaeh was reported to bark frequently in the finder's home and have generalized amxiety. She has also displayed anxious behaviors in care. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: While on walks she reacts to moving objects, cats, and dogs by barking, growling, lunging, and snapping. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Nevaeh was reported to pull during walks with her finder. We recommend a front clip harness to manage her pulling on walks.
