Lu Lu Luna
Hello, my name is Lu Lu Luna. My animal id is #250352. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/23/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLu Lu Luna is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is displaying significant levels of FAS in the shelter setting and immediate reactivity to approach that prevents contact from being made with her. Each attempt made to interact with her increases her level of FAS and reactivity to the level. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/28/26 FB20 Lu Lu Luna's kennel cover is slowly lifted a few inches. Lu Lu Luna is sleeping at the front of the kennel, pressed again the door. She raises her head to give the assessor a soft hiss before laying back down. The cover is replaced.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Lu Lu Luna has a positive and social behavior history in her previous home as well as a positive behavior report on admission. However, there was a significant shift in behavior one she moved from the Admissions room to the Medical Intakes room. When a Behavior staff member was asked to meet with her, she was hunched at the back of the cage an when the cover was lifted, she immediately hissed and growled with ears tilted and lunged at the front of the cage. When staff offered the scratcher too, she hissed and growled as she swatted with both paws, bit and held onto the tool and began to swat and kick at the tool with all of her limbs as she laid on her back and yowled. It is noted that Luna is tolerant of most handling but can get overstimulated if not on her own terms. 3/24/2026 Luna has repeatedly strikes at VS team members when they walk past the kennel. VS team members tried to slowly approach the kennel, and Luna started low growling. Handlers tried to get a little closer and Luna proceeded to lunge at the kennel door while swatting. Given Lu Lu Luna's significant defensive aggression and high level of distress and FAS each time an interaction is attempted, as well as the fact that her behaviors are a significant risk should she be made available for adoptions as a Level 4*, she is being evaluated as New Hope Only, to give the behavior team time to work with her and observe if her behavior is shelter specific and what potential trigger could have occurred between the two rooms on intake.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Although Lu Lu Luna previously lived with a child and was noted to be curious and tolerant, due to the significant behavior challenges exhibited in shelter - at this time she is being made Adult-Only.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Lu Lu Luna is sitting at the back of her cubby with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. Her ears immediately tilt as the assessor approaches the den door and moves to open it. When the door is unlatched and cracked open - she hisses, growls, and lunges as the assessor shuts the portal door. When the Assess-A-Hand is slowly introduced and left in the cubby, she again immediately lunges while hissing and growling, swatting with both paws as she stands on her back legs. She then lays on her back with eyes wide and ears tilted, paws poised to swat and begins to yowl as she swats and bites at the hand, urinating due to fear. The fake hand is removed and the interaction is ended due to her level of escalation and a cubby cover is placed. Lu Lu Luna is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
