MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 07/02/19 Subjective: BARH, tense and hunched, dilated pupils, allows full exam and ear cleaning, but fought restraint and fled around room upon oral treatments. No overt signs of aggression

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/02/19 Resting in the litter box, doesn't wake when coaxed. Allows petting on head and stretches limbs out, but his eyes remain closed when pet. Only opens his eyes when treats are offered and he'll sniff around his kennel space. Starts to eat treats after and continues to allow petting on his head and body. 07/06/19 Curled up in the front of his kennel, he will remain calm and make eye contact when opening the kennel door. He will lean forward and sniff the assessors hand, and tolerates a few strokes before slowly retreating into his other kennel. Curious, but not comfortable yet. Needs more time to adjust. 7/07/19 Doesn't seem to mind being around people, but seems unsure of touch and will slink away when petting is attempted. Very motivated by tuna, however, and will eat tuna from my hand. Started clicker training and rewarded each time he allowed petting. Still hesitant initially, but has potential to warm up more. 07/10/19 Lying in front of kennel, cuddled next to littermate. Makes eye contact when spoken to and remains otherwise calm. Tenses up and retreats to back of kennel when cage door opens, body tense and tail curled around feet. Tolerates petting while squinting eyes shut and retreating to back of kennel. Steps forward for chicken filet and eats all chicken offered. I click and reward each time he steps forward - begins to knead! Will continue to clicker train.

Reaction to assessor:: Aloe is laying towards the back of his kennel with a low body, facing the wall.

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Aloe will make eye contact, but quickly shifts his eyes away from the assessor.

Reaction to cage door opening:: Aloe will get up with a low, hunched body and sniff around the kennel. He will then come forward and "check out" the assessor with a low body.

Reaction to touch:: Aloe will allow all petting and leans away, he will sniff the assessors hand when approached and will eventually retreat into his other kennel after some time.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Curious,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Aloe has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Aloe is timid and a little fearful when interacted with, and may be fearful of small children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Aloe tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter or may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
