Animal Profile

La Princesa

Hello, my name is La Princesa . My animal id is #247000. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/18/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

La Princesa is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Princesa has been observed to be fearful throughout her stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense low body, firmly tucked tail, and is reluctant to approach handlers. While on leash Princesa is also observed to balk and requires constant coaxing. With select handlers, Princesa is receptive to treats. Medically Princesa is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 58.2 lbs

Summary:: 3/14/26: La Princesa greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. She disengages and does not reapproach.

Summary (5):: 03/25/26: La Princesa is at the front of her kennel barking at handler as they approach. She is leashed without issue and exits kennel following handler out to the street without issue. In the street La Princesa, she passes people without issue and pulls moderately outside. She does not accept treats outside and walks with handler stopping to sniff or to relieve herself. After walking for a while she is brought back inside and returns to kennel without issue. 3/22/26 (Assessment): La Princessa is at front of kennel with a tense body as handler approached. She was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. Once she got into hall a staff member was in the hall, La Princessa dropped to the ground and started moving her head around looking for a way out. Once the staff member moved she was able to continue her walk, and she pulled hard the entire way out of the building. She was taken to the behavior room for a re-assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). In the room she would crawl close to the floor. She was somewhat social with handlers, but would duck or move away with any sudden movement. She was returned to her kennel with no issue. 3/17/26: La Princesa is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and brought out the room; she also goes downstairs with ease. The handler tries to pet her heads but Princesa ducks her head twice. On the street, Princesa walks ahead with moderate to hard leash tension; she does this with a lowered head and frequently looking back. Princesa also doesn’t react to dogs or passersby. The handler pets Princessa, which she tolerates. Princesa then quickly cuts in front of the handler, which causes them to kick her slightly and accidentally. Princesa becomes over-aroused and jumps on the handler repeatedly with an open mouth. She does this until she walks back to shelter. Upon entry,

Summary (6):: 3/14/26: La Princesa is at the back of the kennel, on her kuranda bed, with a lowered head and furrowed brow. She approaches the front and is easily leashed. She hesitates to exit the kennel briefly but leaves on her own and exits the room. Her body is lowered as she walks out to the hallway. In the hallway, there is a lot of noise, dogs passing and people passing. She becomes frantic with her hackles raised and tries to pull towards the driveway. She is coaxed away and is walked to the backyard. Princesa does a brief dog-dog interaction (see dog-dog notes). She is then taken to another pen and placed on a drag leash. Princesa begins to zoom around the pen. She approaches the handler, plays bows and then jumps up on them with a slightly tense body. She jumps off and does slight zoomies. She chases after a pigeon. Princesa takes treats from the handler gently before walking off to sniff areas around the yard. After sometime, Princesa is re-leashed. She play bows and jumps up exuberantly towards the handler as the leash is placed over her head. She is then taken back upstairs. She has a lowered body and walks slowly up the stairs before she is walked back to kennel and is returned without issue. 3/9/26: La Princesa is curled up at the back of the kennel with furrowed brows. When handler unlocks the kennel she approaches with a neutral body. She is leashed without issue and taken out of the kennel and out of the room. She is startled by a dog moving in their crate upon exiting the room. She is taken towards the stairs but other handlers with dogs begins to pile up. Handler tries to move her to the side and she freezes refusing to move to let others pass. She does not respond to treats offered to her or squeakers. Mild leash pressure is used to move her. Princesa is then brought downstairs to the street. She walks slowly with a lowered body. She relieves herself a few times and will continue walking. On the way back to the shelter, she occasionally stops walking, looking around and trying to cross the street. When Princesa stops, handler tells her "come on!" or "this way!" And she follows. She walks back inside, startling at people following behind. Upon entering the kennel room, Princesa becomes startled and she pulls hard back to the kennel, she enters the kennel frantically and retreats to the back of the kennel. The leash is removed without issue.

Summary (7):: 3/9/26: It was noted on the whiteboard that La Princesa is very skittish. 3/7/26: La Princesa is sitting in front of her kennel with neutral body. She is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. She pulls hard of the room with tense body. She continues pulling all the way outside. She is taken for a street walk where she immediately relieves herself. She gives whale eye and her body is lowered and ears pulled back. She is not engaging with handler and keeps pulling forwards. She is not interested in treats. La Princesa has no reaction to dogs or people. La Princessa was clipped and brought back to the kennel with no further issues. 3/7/26: It is reported on the behavior board that La Princesa is not afraid to use the elevator. 2/28/26 (late entry): La Princesa approaches the front with a neutral body. She is easily leashed but doesn’t exit kennel. The handler drops treats on the ground below kennel, but she doesn’t exit. The handler then gently adds leash pressure to bring her to the front, and once her front paws are outside, Princesa exits the kennel. She refuses to enter the elevator initially, so the handler runs in with her and she enters. When the elevator goes down, Princesa gets startled and looks around, seeking exit. Once the doors open, she pulls out hard. On the street, Princesa walks next to the handler with mild leash tension. She doesn’t react to dogs or passersby, however, she will look back at those who walk closely behind her with a lowered body. She also looks at the handler a few times. Upon entry, Princessa hesitates to enter the elevator, so the handler runs her in. The handler clips their leash and returns La Princesa to her kennel. 2/28/26: It is reported on the behavior board that La Princesa is reluctant/refuses to exit her kennel. 2/28/26: La Princesa is sitting in her kennel with a tense expression and mildly tense body. Her legs are curled under her in her sit. She takes treats cautiously, then takes more with more confidence. She is leashed with mild difficulty. She comes forwards for more treats, but backs up and crouches with any mild leash pressure. She is lured forwards again with treats both in hand and on the floor. She puts her paws up on the edge, but does not make the step down to the floor. After some time, the walk is abandoned. The leash is removed with a hook, which she is mildly wary of.

Summary:: Panting, pancaked on leash, muscled into kennel

Date of initial:: 2/20/2026

Summary:: Tense, but allows all handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: La Princesa is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for La Princesa.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: La Princesa's previous owner states that she will guard her toys. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of La Princesa's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: La Princesa's previous owner states that she is destructive in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that La Princesa will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: La Princesa's previous owner states that she will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling sensitivyt: La Princesa's previous owner states that she will become fearful when her collar is touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach La Princesa to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: La Princesa's previous owner states that she will hard bark at strangers. La Princesa has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body, whale eye and retreats from the handler. It is important to move slowly with Princesa, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactive: La Princesa's previous owner states that she will hard bark at cats, small aniamls, and birds. La Princesa will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
