Animal Profile

Campana

Hello, my name is Campana. My animal id is #258513. I am a female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/5/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - landlord won't allow.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Campana is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Campana has not acclimated well to the shelter enviornment and is not allowing handling. She has escalated to hard barking, growling, baring teeth, and snapping at handlers and during leashing. Once out of her kennel, she thrashes, flails, and air-snaps at the lead for the duration of her time outside. Camapna did escalate to biting a staff member when they were trying to clip their ring on their finger. The bite did not break the skin. Her previous owner reported that she enjoys chicken treats and when they would take her on runs in the park.

Campana's previous owner described her as playful and independent, and she enjoys running, chicken treats, baths, and being brushed. She is comfortable getting into a car, although she may be slightly nervous. Campana has not acclimated well to the shelter enviornment and would benefit from placement in an adult-only home with a New Hope partner due to behavioral concerns that will require an experienced and supportive home who can provide appropriate management, decompression, and consistent force-free, reward-based training. Campana may have the opportunity to successfully transition into a home environment. She has demonstrated fear-based behaviors and reactivity toward unfamiliar people and dogs, including hard barking, growling, and lunging. She has also shown significant difficulty with leash handling, including thrashing, flailing, and air snapping, and previously bit a handler's finger during an attempt to return her to her kennel; the bite did not break the skin. Campana is also reported to guard food and treats and does not tolerate nail trimming.

Date of assessment:: 10/8/2026

Summary:: Campana has not allowed for handling during her stay in care. She continues to escalate to baring teeth, snapping, and growling at handlers and when attempting to leash her from the kennel. Once out of the kennel, she thrashes/flails and air-snaps. She has bitten a hadnler when they attempted to clip their lead to return her to the kennel. Due to these concerns, Campana is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment.

Summary (7):: 10/7 (PM): Campana is lounging on her kuranda bed when a handler approaches. She begins growling as the door is unlocked. She sits up and moves to sit between the kuranda bed and the corner of the kennel. Campana growls, bares teeth, and snaps at the lead while ducking and dodging it. It takes a few attempts to successfully leash her. When the kennel door opens, she comes out thrashing, flailing, and air-snapping. She continues this throughout the walk to her new kennel, and a hook is used to remove the lead. 10/06/26: Campana is standing in the back of her kennel, displaying defensive behavior, and will avoid the leash and growls, bares teeth, and snaps at the lead as the handler attempts to lasso her. The handler will drop the loop from overhead and guide it around her neck. Campana will then bolt toward the front of the kennel, thrashing and biting the leash until she reaches the hallway. The handler will move quickly to redirect her from thrashing and leash biting and will proceed to the play yard for her relief walk. When returning to the care center, Campana will make contact with the handler’s hand with her teeth as the handler attempts to clip the leash for a figure-eight loop (Did not break skin). The handler will pull their hand back and use a hook to remove the leash instead. Campana will then be placed back into her kennel safely without any further issues.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Campana is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Campana.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the behavior concerns reported in the previous home and during her stay in care, we recommend that Campana be placed in an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Campana has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Campana is reported to not be house trained. She will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House soiling. Resource guarding: Campana is reported to guard food and treats; she will hover over them with a tense body while hard barking and growling. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of her mouth, and any time something is removed, she should be rewarded with a high-value treat or toy. She should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Campana is reported to jump up often while in the previous home. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity | Bite history (human): Campana is reported to not allow her owners to trim her nails. During her stay in care, she has not allowed for leashing and will begin thrashing and flailing when on leash, air snapping. She did bite a hadnler's finger when they were attempting to clip the ring to return her to kennel. The bite did not break skin. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Campana is reported to hard bark, growl, and lunge at strangers. She has displayed similar behaviors during her stay in care. Her signs of discomfort must be respected; Campana should never be forced to interact, and she should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people she finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach, and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Campana. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease her quality of life. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Campana is reported to react to strangers and small and large dogs while on walks. She will jump, bark hard, and growl. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
