Animal Profile

Swanson

Hello, my name is Swanson. My animal id is #252442. I am a desexed female torbie cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/18/2026.

Swanson is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Swanson is a quiet, watchful tabby girl with thoughtful eyes and a gentle spirit. 🩶🐾 Right now, the shelter feels far too overwhelming for her, so she prefers to observe the world from a safe distance rather than join in on playtime or social activities. There's something deeply meaningful and moving in her quiet presence - a soft kind of beauty that reveals itself slowly to those willing to listen. Swanson is looking for a calm, low-traffic home with patient caretakers who will let her settle in at her own pace. She may never be the loudest or boldest cat in the room, but for the right person, her cautious trust and quiet companionship will feel incredibly special. If you have a peaceful home and a heart for shy souls, Swanson may be ready to write her next chapter with you. ✨

Date of Intake: 4/18/2026

KNOWN HISTORY:: Swanson was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. Due to FAS Swanson was transferred from carrier to carrier and placed into her kennel. No further handling was done.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/26/26 FB06 Swanson is tucked away inside the den out of sight. As I lift the den cover she starts to perch herself up, her eyes are wide and face is tense. As I offer her the scratcher, she has no interest. She tolerates some body pets as she watches my hand outside the den. 4/29/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She does not explore the offerings or catnip treat offered at this time. I speak to him softly and end the session. Hopefully she explores the treats later when she feels more comfortable. 5/4/26 FB06 As Swanson is in her den out of view, I slowly lift the den cover where she is lying in a loaf, eyes widening as the cover comes off. Her ears are forward and her face becoming tense. As I slowly offer the scratcher, she tenses into a perched position, face and body tense, eyes widening and her tail wrapped tight around her back legs. She tolerates some cheek scratches and body pets with the scratcher. 5/06/26 FB61 In cat den, body and face tense with her tail wrapped tightly around her body. She tenses, flinches and backs away as the kennel door opens. She avoids eye contact with a wide-eyed expression when the den cover is lifted and she does not acknowledge the treats or catnip toy offered (she remains too focused on me and the environment). Nervous mamas - needs more time to adjust. 5/11/26 FB06 Swanson is perched up as I lift the den cover, eyes are wide and face is tense. As I offer the some squeeze up, she has no interest. She has no interest in the scratcher when offered. She allows for some head and cheek pets as she remains still, body starts to loosen slightly. I removed the front of the den to see if she’ll be a little more social. 5/12/26 FB58 Swanson is sitting up at the back of the shelf with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, feet all touched together and tail wrapped around them tightly. Her den door and cover remain off, and she is wary and avoidant of interacting with me, remaining pressed to the back of the cage and leaning away from the scratcher tool. When offered treats, she shows no interest. 5/14/26 FB79 At the top of the kennel, Swanson sits with wide eyes forward ears and his tail around his legs; he tensed up when I entered the kennel and his eyes dilated. When I used the tool hissers flattened to his head before I made contact and when I used it to pet his cheeks he slowly lifted his paws while slightly pulling away. However, he tolerated pets with no further reaction. 5/20/26 FB06 Swanson is perched on top her den, wide eyes, tense face and body. As I open the door, she jumps on the ledge and sits tense in the corner with her tail wrapped tight around her body. She tolerates some head and body pets as she is staring out into the room with wide eyes. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to showing signs of FAS in shelter, and requiring a longer period to warm up - the behavior team recommends Swanson goes to an adult only home to provide her with an environment in which they can appropriately acclimate/be socialized.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 4-21-26: Upon approach, Swanson was tucked inside the den out of view. As the kennel door opened and the scratcher was slowly offered, she had no interest. The assessor then lifted the den cover where Swanson could be seen with wide eyes, a neutral face and forward ears as she was crouched down. Offering her the scratcher again, she still has no interest. She tolerated some head and body pets with the scratcher as she squirmed to the back of the den into a perched position and her eyes widened. No pick up was attempted at this time. 5-21-25: Upon approach, Swanson was tucked in the highest corner of the kennel. As the scratcher was slowly offered, she showed no interest. She had wide eyes and remained crouched in her corner. Her ears remained forward and she simply watched the assessor with no reaction. When the sides of her face and back were pet with the scratcher, she remained frozen in place. When the kennel door was closed, she began licking her lips. Swanson tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
