Animal Profile

Troy

Hello, my name is Troy. My animal id is #204602. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/17/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - no time for animal.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Troy is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Troy has not acclimated well to the shelter enviornment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. While Troy has been easy to remove from kennel for walks and readily accepts treats gently from handlers, he has not warmed up to handlers and staff. He remains stiff-bodied and will track handlers' movements. Troy does not break his stare and will fixate on their hands. During his intake, Troy was alligator rolling and growling at staff during his vaccines. When trying to walk him to his kennel, he would remain stiff, hard stare, and growl at staff. Medically, Troy has dental disease, dermatitis, and an ear infection.

His previous owner stated that he loves going on long walks, lounging in the living room, playing with chewy toys, and rubbing on you like a cat for pets. Troy has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. He remains stiff-bodied and will avoid interaction and only approaches handlers for treats. When attempting a handling assessment, he was stiff-bodied and hard-stared at the handler when touched. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. What my friends at ACC say about me: I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Troy's fearful behavior, we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Troy has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: During the assessment treats are tossed due to him taking treats roughly. Teaching him to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Fearful/potential for defensive aggression| Handling/touch sensitivity | Anxiety: During his intake, Troy was reported to be growling and alligator rolling when vaccinated. He remained stiff and would stare hard at staff. Troy began to stare hard at the handlers, displaying a tense body and semi-tucked during his handling assessment. Gradually desensitize him to the care center environment by introducing him to it in short, positive sessions, rewarding him with treats and praise for calm behavior. Use positive reinforcement to build his confidence and create positive associations. Engage him in activities that he enjoys to distract him from his anxiety and help him feel more comfortable. Consistency and patience are crucial in helping Liberty overcome his fear and anxiety. If his anxiety persists, consider consulting a professional dog trainer or behaviorist for additional support. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety, fearful/potential for defensive aggression, and Handling/touch sensitivity.
