Peepaw
Hello, my name is Peepaw. My animal id is #226269. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/4/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormPeepaw is at-risk due to behavior concerns in care. PeePaw has made it difficult for handlers to walk him when he is brought back to his kennel and back into the center. He often pancakes or plants himself and has had to be transported using a belly band or cart when he refuses to move, even with coaxing or treats. Peepaw does not respond to food or toy motivation. Medically PeePaw has dental disease and a mass.

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary:: Due to Peepaw entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/12/25 Peepaw is introduced to a novel female dog while on leash at the care center. Peepaw will enter the room, remaining self-present displaying a neutral frame. As the novel female dog tense up and begins to stalk peepaw, he is taken out of the room, concluding the interaction. 05/07/27: Due to Peepaw's reluctance to walk, a Dog-to-Dog interaction was not conducted. Peepaw will be reassessed at a later date once behavior has improved. 05/05/25 Peepaw is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Peepaw doesn't greet the novel female dog, appearing aloof, looking off into the distance. He will approach the exit and remain still in front of the door. Peepaw ultimately ignores the novel female dog. Peepaw is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (6):: 05/09/25: Peepaw is observed planting himself to the ground again, refusing to return to the care center. A medical staff member and a canine behavior team member assist in bringing him back inside using a belly band, one placed under his stomach and the other under his neck, for support. Peepaw is safely carried back to his kennel without further issue. 05/09/25: Peepaw is observed being walked by two ACS staff members who require assistance returning him to the care center due to him planting himself on the ground. Two additional handlers arrive to assist one being from Feline behavior and utilize a rope under Peepaw’s belly to help guide him inside and load him onto the elevator safely.
Summary (7):: 5/09/25: Feline behavior staff report that they had to belly band Peepaw and help him back into the care center. 5/7: Behavior staff was requested to help bring Peepaw back into the building due to his pancaking and refusal to walk. He does not take treats or respond to squeakers. Peepaw bears all his weight down, even with a belly band, and still refuses to move. One staff member gets a cart for the other 2 behavior staff to lift Peepaw onto cart to wheel him inside and reduce his stress. Peepaw chooses to jump off the cart but does trot along side the handler as they jog towards the back parking lot to the elevator. He continues his trot back to his kennel and walks in without issue. 05/05/25: Peepaw was laying on kuranda bed as handler approached. He slowly made his way to front of kennel and was leashed with ease. He ignored other dogs kennel fighting on his way to the BA room for his assessment. Peepaw seemed lethargic and consistently moved at a slow pace. His kennel was unsoiled and he did not relieve himself while in the room so handler took him outside for a relief walk. He planted his feet a number of times on the way back inside and would only take a few steps forward when handler crouched down and verbally coaxed him to them. He accepted pets before planting his feet again. A second handler brought cheese which he did not eat. Peepaw would balk and sit down when directional leash pressure was applied. Peepaw made his way down the ramp willingly when handlers used upbeat voices and a slow jog. He walked back into kennel without issue. (Playgroup): Peepaw is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walks on a loose lead to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). Peepaw keeps to self throughout his time in the yard but will accept petting with a neutral frame. He shows no interest in treats offered. After his session, he will plant himself coming down the ramp. Handler walks him onto the sidewalk, and he slowly makes his way back into the Care Center, pausing to scent several times. Peepaw is returned to kennel safely.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful: Peepaw has shown neck sensitivity and fearfulness during walks and when returning to the care center. Training should focus on gradually desensitizing him to handling around his neck and building his confidence through positive reinforcement. Creating a calm and reassuring environment during walks and transitions can help reduce his fearfulness and improve his overall comfort. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity and decompression period.
