Animal Profile

Chanel No 5

Hello, my name is Chanel No 5. My animal id is #264845. I am a female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/11/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - destructive tendencies.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Chanel No 5 is at risk due to behavioral reasons. In her previous home Chanel was reported to have a bite incident and destructive tendencies. The bite was a bite and release that did break skin. While in care, Chanel has been observed to have poor impulse control. In one instance, a handler was walking by while holding linens. Chanel then lunged at the handler and bit and held the linens. Chanel's previous owner describes her as social and affectionate. With handlers, Chanel has been noted to be receptive to pattern games. Medically, Chanel is apparently healthy.

Summary:: According to Chanel No. 5's previous owner(s), Chanel is playful, friendly and outgoing with other dogs. 9/22/26: Chanel no. 5 is introduced to a novel intact male and is tense at the fence with mid level wags. When the other dog approaches, she bares teeth, gives a short growl, and air snaps at the fence. She has a tight closed mouth as the dog is pulled away, then turns and sits for treats from her handler. She does not react further or reapproach the fence.

Summary (5):: 11/2/26: Chanel is at the front of her kennel with a tense body, jumping onto the kennel door as handler begins to unlock the kennel she would settle and is easily leashed. Once removed from kennel, she has a moderate pull forward and remains tense as she watches the pop-up crates. As handler begin to wait for the elevator, Chanel would gain interest towards the veranda area and would attempt to pull towards. Shortly after, a staff member walks past carrying folded linen - Chanel would then quickly lunge, bite and hold onto the linen and handler pulls Chanel back and sees the bite marks left in the linen. She is then clipped and kept on a short leash, returned back to her kennel with ease. 10/28/26: Chanel is at the front of her kennel, pacing back and forth while displaying open-mouth panting when handler approaches. She barks repeatedly while handler unlocks the kennel. She is receptive to treats and is lured and leashed with no issue. She quickly exits the kennel and pulls strongly all the way out. Once she is out of the room she starts jumping on the surfaces in the hallways and bins with toys trying to get one but eventually looses interest. Once in elevator, Chanel continues walking back and forth while panting. She is treat-motivated (takes with mild tension) and sits after cue. Once outside, she immediately relieves herself before resuming the walk. She moves with strong forward pulling and makes herself choke and cough. She frequently leans into the leash, keeping her weight shifted forward. Chanel sniffs a lot discovering her surroundings but passes different stimuli (birds, people, cars, small dogs) with no interest. Handler is able to cue her to sit and engage in quick pattern games to give her some time to settle. She readily approaches the handler for attention, accepts petting, and wags her tail while engaged. After some time she visibly gets more relaxed and reduces her pace. Upon return handler clips the leash and brings Chanel back into her kennel with no further issues.

Summary (6):: 10/23/26: Chanel is reported to break out of her crate once. Carabiners were used to secure the crate, but she breaks the crate door by tugging on it. Chanel is brought into a new kennel; she has also been vocalizing. 10/16/26: Chanel is at the front of her kennel with loose body when handler approaches. She starts barking in demanding manner while handler is unlocking the kennel. Chanel leashed with a treat lure and taken out of the kennel. Chanel exits the room following the handler with no interest in neighboring dogs. Chanel sits next to the handler in elevator and accepts treats (takes hard). Once outside Chanel relieves herself and continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with mild to none leash tension. Chanel is social and seeking attention from handler. She allows petting and shows tail wags while being pet. She is highly treat-motivated and follows basic verbal cues. Chanel has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. She remains loose body and soft face. Upon return handler clips the leash and brings Chanel back into her kennel with no further issues. 10/09/26: Chanel is at the front of her kennel when handler approaches. She does body shake and is easily leashed. Se readily exits and walks through the hallways with no reaction to other dogs or staff members. Once outside she immediately relieves herself. Chanel continues walking alongside the handler on the loose leash. She exuberantly jumps onto the handler with loose body and accepts petting showing tail wags. She follow the verbal cues and accepts treats (takes hard). She has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. She remains loose body with soft face. Upon return handler clips the leash and brings Chanel back into her kennel with no further issue.

Summary (7):: 10/01/26: [reassessment]: Chanel is lying down at the front of her kennel when handler approaches. She gets up and does body stretch while handler is unlocking the kennel. She is easily leashed and willingly exits the kennel. Chanel walks alongside the handler in the hallways with no reaction to other dogs or staff members. Once outside she sniffs around the driveway and relieves herself. Chanel continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with no pulling. She has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. Her body is soft with relaxed face. She leans onto the handler when being pet and seeking additional attention from them. She is social, is focused on the handler and follows verbal cues. Once walk is done Chanel is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the reassessment (see notes). Upon return handler clips the leash and brings Chanel back into her kennel with no further issue. 9/17/26 [assessment]: Chanel is at the front of her pop-up crate with loose body when handler approaches. ENERGY LEVEL:: Her previous owners describe Chanel as a high-energy dog. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Chanel's Bite history, we recommend placement in an adult only dog. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Chanel No. 5 has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that she should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Chanel associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Chanel's previous owner reports that she has a tense body or hovers over toys. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Chanel's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive behavior: Chanel's is reported to show destructive behavior in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Chanel will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout for Destructive Behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Chanel is noted to jump up often. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Chanel is noted to take treats with hard pressure. Continued training should focus on reinforcing gentle treat-taking and rewarding calm, controlled interactions with handlers. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful/Potential for defensive aggression: Chanel is noted in the prior home when Startled to Barks/Growls and when Pushed/pulled off furniture she will Barks/Growls. Interactions should be approached calmly and predictably, with attention given to her body language and comfort level to help prevent escalation and build confidence. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (human): Please see bite history for more details. Leash Biting: Chanel's previous owners report that she will leash bite. We recommend walking her with a toy to dissuade her from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach her to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. please see handout for Leash Manners.
