Sony
Hello, my name is Sony. My animal id is #245084. I am a male brown dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Sony is at risk for behavior reasons. Sony is highly stressed during walking hours. When staff attempt to remove him from kennel he begins leash-biting. Sony has continued leash-biting once removed, climbing the leash towards handler's hands. During socialization, he is social and tolerant of handling. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

With his active personality and fun-loving spirit, he's always ready for a game-especially if toys are involved, as they're one of his favorite things! He enjoys daily walks and would do best with someone who can help guide him on leash, as he can be a strong puller. Sony has never been crated and prefers to spend his time close to his family. He also loves car rides, making him a great companion for outings and adventures. Sony understands commands in both English and Spanish and previously lived successfully with a cat. If you're looking for a lively, loving companion who will keep you smiling, Sony may be the perfect match for you.

Summary:: 2.22.2026 Sony meets a large breed female dog through a gate. Sony approached with an excited body and wagging tail. He sniffs at and greets the other dog. He begins to whine and barks when he is walked away.
Summary (6):: 3/4: Sony is given a long-lasting chew to dissuade leash-biting. Once secured, he comes out of the kennel and pulls hard through the room. He pulls out into the yard, and a drag leash is attached. He explores on his own, relieving himself. When another dog/staff pair passes, he runs along the fence and attempts to use the furniture in the yard to climb over the fence. He follows to the back of the yard. Handler calls him over, and he runs, is secured with the slip leash, rope harnessed, and brought on a walk. On the walk, he remains near the handler. When being returned, he is kept on a short leash.
Summary (7):: 3/3 Sony is jumping up against the kennel door, pawing and barking on his hind legs when staff approaches. He is leashed with the help of a jerky treat and taken to the yard. In the yard, Sony smells and explores. Sony is offered a moist and meaty cube treat from an open palm and smells it with a soft body, but then turns his head. He ends up in the snow mound towards the back and paws at the ice, attempting to dig through it. On return Sony see's Apollo's paws come out from under the kennel and pulls towards the door as he is brought back in and barks at Apollo's kennel. 3/1 Sony is up against the kennel door when staff approaches. When attempting to leash be bites and pulls the loop of the rope of staff and tugs on it until he is distracted by a treat. He is then leashed with the help of a jerky treat and taken out on a walk. On the walk, he walks at the end of the rope. On the way back, he looks back at the staff, then jumps up towards the rope but keeps his mouth closed. The staff ushers him to continue walking forward, and he complies. Sony is easily returned to his kennel. 2/26: Sony is easily leashed and pulls to exit the room. He is unable to make it outside and begins urinating, ignoring barking dogs in their kennels. Outside, he is let off-leash in the yard. He is tolerant of pets and investigates smells. Handler decides to go on a walk with him a female medium mixed breed dog is walked by on leash and he pulls to greet her. The handler uses her squeaker, and he begins to jump up for the leash several times. When he stops, he returns without further issue. 2/25: Sony is jumping up and down at the kennel front. He is easily leashed and allowed to be rope harnessed at the door. He pulls to greet another dog in the yard, but is moved along. He pulls on and off. He allows all handling for the harness to be undone, and when he is returned to his kennel, he turns and barks at the handler. 2/21: Sony is jumping up and barking on approach. He is easily leashed and brought out to the yard. In the yard, he explores. Staff throws a couple of toys and a ball, and he ignores them. On return, he walks around the door of his kennel and needs to be guided in, but ultimately returns relatively easily, with a little bit of pulling. 2/20: Sony is jumping up and barking at his kennel door when staff approaches. He is initially difficult to leash because of excessive jumping. Staff places a treat in front of the kennel and is finally able to leash him. He is taken to the yard where a drag leash is attached. He spends most of the time exploring the yard on his own. Staff offers him a treat, which he sniffs but doesn't eat. Staff tosses a tennis ball across the yard and he chases after it. He is easily leashed and brought back to his kennel where he initially balks but is gently ushered inside.

Summary:: Friendly, soft body, sits for treats, allowed handling with gentle restraint
ENERGY LEVEL:: Sony is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Sony.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) We recommend an adult only home for Sony at this time due to his potential to become over aroused.
Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: ANXIETY Sony is anxious in his kennel, barking, banging against the door. If Sony displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. ON-LEASH REACTIVITY/BARRIER FRUSTRATION Sony seems interested in other dogs when passing them on leash. He will pull, and whine when kept at a distance. He has been observed to become frustrated in these moments and begin jumping up and biting at the leash. We recommend walking him with treats or a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners. LEASH-BITING Sony is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with treats or a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners. Low Threshold For Arousal During the jog Sony was quick to jump up and begin to bite at the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Sony to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around, or when doing high energy activities like running. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Sony. Please see handout on arousal.
