Red Bull
Hello, my name is Red Bull. My animal id is #257635. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/18/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormRed Bull is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Red Bull has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, displaying a concerning level of arousal which has made walking him safely difficult. Red Bull has been easy to remove from his kennel, but will pull hard on leash/outside and persistently jump up towards staff/handlers' faces. He will occasionally stop to take treats, but has fixated on leads, intensely sniffing their knees, and has torn clothing near their stomach potentially by his nails. In calmer settings, Red Bull has been able to engage with snuffle mats and scented enrichment toys. Medically, Red Bull was treated for an ear infection but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Red Bull was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. Red Bull has been social with handlers, readily accepts treats, and has loose, wiggly body language. But Red Bull quickly becomes aroused, jumping up persistently and at times nearly head/level. He is currently being managed with tossing treats, but once he is done eating, Red Bull resumes the aforementioned behaviors. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Behavior Condition: 1. Green
Date of intake:: 6/18/2026
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray; history unknown
Date of assessment:: 6/21/2026
Summary:: Due to Redbull's low threshold for arousal and his persistent jumping on staff, he is unable to receive a handling assessment.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-dog history recorded. 06/21/26 Red Bull is introduced to a novel female while on a loose leash (overly aroused and unable to collar). Red Bull approaches the gate with a forward, tense frame and high-flagged tail. He remains aroused and will jump up onto handler throughout.
Summary (6):: 7/9/26: (2) Red Bull was at front of kennel with a tense body as handler approached. He was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. During walk he kept jumping at handler and handler would have to straight arm to keep him away. Handler's shirt got ripped by what they believe was Red Bull's nails. During the jumping Red Bull's face was getting close to handler's stomach and his paws came in contact numerous times. He was returned to kennel. (1): An ACS reports that during a walk, Red Bull would persistently jump up on them, near to their face, and would not take treats or squeakers when attempting to redirect him. The ACS has to stiff-arm Red Bull and walks him back to his kennel due to his persistent and increasing arousal. The walk could not be completed.
Summary (7):: 7/7/26: Red Bull allowed the handler to leash him while in his kennel and pulled strongly with forward pressure on the way to the elevator and play yard. He displayed excited behavior by repeatedly jumping on the handler. Once inside the yard, he immediately engaged with the snuffle mats and quickly located and consumed all of the Churu bites and liver treats. He investigated the catnip mat by sniffing it but chose not to engage further. Red Bull remained energetic on the return trip, though slightly calmer than at the start of the session, and was returned safely to his kennel without any issues. 6/25/26: Red Bull is standing in his crate with a loose body as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he then pulls on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard while heavy panting. He is comfortable approaching the handler and would take treats. He would stare at dogs and people that would pass by and is able to be redirected with treats. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 06/23/26: Red Bull is at the front of his crate barking as the handler approaches. He jumps up and paws at the crate door, but the handler is able to leash him while distracting him with treats. Red Bull pulls hard and jumps up frequently. He turns around and fixates on the end of the leash in the handler's left hand. The handler tosses treats for him to keep his attention away from the leash. He continues to pull hard while returning, but walks into the room and enters his crate with no issue. 06/22/26: Red Bull is at the front of his crate, barking as the handler approaches. The handler distracts him with treats while leashing him, and Red Bull pushes out of his crate. He pulls hard both in the building and outside. While walking, he frequently jumps up towards the handler. When the handler tosses treats, Red Bull will walk for a bit, then jump up again. He also frequently turns around to intensely sniff the handler's knees. The handler, again, uses treats to refocus his attention. Red Bull pulls hard back into the building, but is returned to his crate without issue. 6/21/26: Red Bull is at the front of the kennel pawing hard at the door. He is leashed with treats and will then jump up towards a staff member's face but is stopped with the leash. He will then turn around and jump towards the handler and is stiff armed and will continue walking. He is brought out to the yard where he will meet a novel dog. In the yard and throughout the walk back to the kennel, the handler has to toss treats to keep Red Bull from jumping up towards the handler. He is returned and secured safely.
Date of intake:: 6/18/2026
Summary:: friendly, takes treats, allowed all handling
Date of initial:: 6/20/2026
Summary:: Easy to examine, loose, wagging tail, very active and excited, very receptive to human attention
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Red Bull's low threshold for arousal and reaction to novel stimuli, we recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Red Bull has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control | Low threshold for arousal: Red Bull persistently jumps up on handlers, reaching nearly head/eye level at times. While he does take treats, it takes several attempts to consistently treat tossing to manage his behaviors. Please see the handout on Arousal and Basic manners/poor impulse control.
