Animal Profile

Pennyy

Hello, my name is Pennyy. My animal id is #251075. I am a female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 5 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/1/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Pennyy has been placed on the At Risk list for medical reasons. She has a significant hear murmur and is underweight. She is not eating well in the hospital and is hypersalivating at time. She needs care, support and diagnostics that we cannot provide. Behaviorally, Pennyy has allowed handling from staff, but appears to be a little head-shy.

She has a significant hear murmur and is underweight. She is not eating well in the hospital and is hypersalivating at time. She needs care, support and diagnostics that we cannot provide. Behaviorally, Pennyy has allowed handling from staff, but appears to be a little head-shy. Penny is a sweet, well-rounded pup with a gentle spirit and a playful side. She's social, affectionate, and loves being around her people, but also has a calm and quiet nature that makes her a wonderful companion for a relaxed home. Her favorite place to hang out is the bedroom, where she can unwind and feel cozy. Penny enjoys staying active and would love to join you for her twice-daily walks. She may pull just a little on the leash, but with consistency, she'll continue to improve. She's also a big fan of car rides, making her a great partner for errands or weekend adventures. Bath time is one of Penny's favorite activities-she absolutely loves water! She's also a smart girl who already knows commands like "sit," "give paw," and responds to "yes," which will make continued training a breeze. Penny has been described as incredibly friendly and calm, truly the best of both worlds. With her loving personality and easygoing nature, she's ready to find a home where she can be cherished as part of the family. What my friends at ACC say about me: I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Pennyy's former owners report that she is fearful of loud noises, in care she has shown signs of FAS during her medical exams. It is important to always go slow and give Pennyy the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Pennyy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: During her assessment handlers noted that Pennyy would begin to whine and vocalize toward the end of her assessment, her owners also report she will be anxious when left alone. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Pennyy's former owners report she will react to cars, bikes and motorcycles on leash. Pennyy may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
