Compañero
Hello, my name is Compañero. My animal id is #237812. I am a desexed male ginger tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/26/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Compañero is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has warmed up minimally once being moved to the free roam room and being reunited with his sibling from his previous home Gus (229026), and has been deemed to be BONDED and spends a majority of his time sitting and sleeping next to him. However, despite staff using treats to build a positive association he has not made significant progress in opening up to interactions with people. Due to his stress level, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful, under socialized, adult cat adjust to strangers.

I can go home today! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would like a home where there is another cat that I can play with! What do you get when you cross a cat with a couch? A cat-potato! And that's me to a T! Compañero tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: There are times I read notes about a happy and playful cat and feel so hopeful, but sometimes it seems the cat I'm reading about and the cat I see are two completely different beings. Meet Compañero. We've heard that Compañero blossoms when he's in the company of other cats and is outgoing and friendly. He's said to enjoy playing gently with friends. Admittedly, I haven't made it to that group yet. Snuggled up all the way in the back of his cubby, Compañero doesn't seem to know what he should be doing, but his best amounts to quite a lot as he tries to figure things out. Compañero came to us from a home with many cats and since this home with all of his cat friends was the only home he'd known his whole life, shelter life has been a considerable shift. We know there's a family who will want to take a chance on him and we sincerely hope it will be you.

Upon intake Amigo was stress meowing and panting inside of his carrier with his body tucked and tail tucked facing the opposite way of the carriers opening. Every time counselors would go to touch him, he stressed meowed loudly. Counselors did not want to stress him out more by collaring and scanning for microchip, so he was then placed from carrier to carrier. When being put into his kennel Amigo did flee and was loose in the exam room. Counselors were able to apprehend amigo and place his safely and gently into his kennel. "Will Flee" signage was placed on the kennel with his kennel card.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/2/25 FB79 On the top part of this den, Compañero is perched with his paws tucked and his tail wrapped. He has wide eyes and low growls/grumbles when i speak to him while turning his head away into the corner to avoid any further contact. He does however, lean in to sniff the tool that i slowly bring close and tolerates brief petting on the top of his head before he starts to hiss. He low growls again when i run the tool down his back and body but remains still/tolerant. 10/6/25 FB61 Compañero was lying in the back of his cubby, as I approached, his body and face tense with his tail wrapped around his feet, amigo, tolerated petting and on his head and back with the scratcher tool, while tilting his ears and avoiding eye contact. Compañero began growling when offered a treats and a catnip toy so I spoke to him softly slow blinked and ended the session. Compañero did not interact with the enrichment offered while I was watching. 10/10/25 FB79 Compañero is inside of his cubby with his tail tightly wrapped, wide eyes and his ears slightly tilted when i opened the cubby door. I spoke to him softly which he seems to have no reaction to but when i used the tool for pets he backed away, lip licked and hissed at me followed by low growling. He didn't enjoy any of the treats that i offered but he also did not escalate any further. 10/15/25 Fb58 Laying under the cat tower with a slightly tense face and body but does not hiss or growl. I offer the scratcher tool out to him and he sniffs it a little, accepting pets along his head, cheeks, and body but remaining in place. Seems more relaxed in the free roam room even if he is still getting used to it and is hiding. 10/20/25 FB61 Compañero was hunched underneath some furniture in the free roam room, huddled next to another cat (Gus). He is tolerant of petting while shifting away from the assessor and tilting his ears. He is not too found of interacting with humans, however he is always next to another cat in the free roam room and is consistently respectful of their boundaries. Compañero would make a great addition to a home that already has resident cats. 10/28/25 FB06 Companero was huddled up in a box with Juna underneath the furniture. I couldn't reach where they were so I just spoke gently. I could see his eyes were wide but he was relaxed laying next to Juna. 11/4/25 FB58 Companero has not improved significantly in his openness to interacting with behavior staff while in the free roam room but appears much more relaxed now that he is back surrounded by cats. Companero has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. He is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Bonded pair,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Due to coming from a home with 14+ other cats, Compañero may have been somewhat socialized to their people but not appropriately socialized to humans/strangers. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people, we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. While being housed in the free roam room and reunited with another cat from his previous home Gus (229026), Compañero's general presence appears to have improved as he has company but he still remains somewhat wary of human interaction and of the shelter environment.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Compañero would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. Compañero may benefit from being in a home with another, friendly, and appropriately socialized cat from whom he can learn behaviors and have interactions with humans modeled by, to help him gain confidence and comfort in a new environment. See Potential Challenges for more info on Compañero in the Free Roam Rooms.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/29/25 Compañero was lying down in the back of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense with his feet and tail tucked. Compañero made eye contact with wide eyes when spoken to and he looked around the room as the kennel door opened. Compañero allowed petting along his head and body while remaining tense and looking around the room. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Compañero needs more time to warm up. 10/29/25 On approach, Compañero is hiding under the large hide next to Gus (229026) with slightly tense face and body, eyes wide and hisses when the assessor offers their hand out. He allows pets along his head and cheeks and leans in slightly as he remains somewhat tense. He allows pets along his back with the scratcher tool, and hisses when the assessor's hand is pulled back too quickly. 12/29/25 Companero displayed similar behaviors during his reassessment. Compañero tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
