Diya
Hello, my name is Diya. My animal id is #70096. I am a desexed female brown dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 7/23/2019.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.
Diya was placed at risk due to behavioral concerns; Because Diya remains highly fearful in the care center and has been observed to escalate on multiple occasions when uncomfortable. She has shown an improvement at the care center but remains fearful and would benefit from placement with an experienced rescue partner that can reassess behavior when in a more stable environment. Diya is otherwise healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...
A volunteer writes: Diya is the kind of girl who always lets you know how she feels. She got all wiggly and waggly when I approached her kennel, and did a little happy dance as we walked outside. She seemed to want to make friends - coming right up and checking me out with a soft face and shyly wagging her tail - but she wasn't quite ready to be petted. But that's okay - we had fun in other ways. Diya gladly showed me how she knows the cues for "sit" and "down", and how polite she is in accepting treats. I think she's housebroken, too! This little mocha beauty seems to be really sweet, but needs a relaxing home where she can go at her own pace in order to blossom. And she'll be sure to let you know how totally happy you've made her! Come and meet Diya today at the Brooklyn ACC shelter where she's patiently awaiting her fur-ever home.

Summary:: Diya was surrendered to the care center as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. 7/24-7/25: When off leash at the Care Center, Diya is introduced to a novel male dog. She is fearful - tucked posture, lowered head- and does not approach the male nor greet the male. The male is held at a distance to give Diya an opportunity to approach. She avoids the male for the entire session. 8/6: Diya continues to be uncomfortable when introduced to a novel male dog. She wanders the pens with a tense posture but does sniff the males rear briefly.
Date of intake:: 7/23/2019
Summary:: Timid, hard barking; Allowed slow handling
Date of initial:: 7/23/2019
Summary:: Whale eyed, flinched w/ contact, tucked tail; Growled, bared teeth; Muzzled
ENERGY LEVEL:: Diya has been observed to exhibit a medium level of energy during her interactions in the care center. We cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment, but we recommend that she be provided daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet for her energy.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 8/6/19: Today a handler was giving Diya treats when she was leaving playgroup. When the handler had no more treats, she slowly turned her palm towards Diya, keeping it close to her body line, to present an empty hand. Diya leaned forward to sniff the hand then growled and snapped catching the tip of the handler's finger. No marks or broken skin. 8/2/2019: Diya was easily removed from her kennel without avoiding the rope or showing signs of fearfulness. Upon entering the pens, handler crouched down and attached a drag-leash while Diya maintained a neutral body. Diya flinched when handler moved her hand too quickly but quickly returned to being neutral. Once free, Diya roamed the pens. She engaged in play with tennis balls and was willingness to trade. Diya solicited attention by approaching and leaning in and/or by standing on her back legs with her paws against handler's stomach area. She allowed all handling with a loose body, giving tail wags throughout. Another dog/handler pair entered a pen near ours for their interaction, which at first distracted Diya, causing her to walk over to the pen gate and watch the dog with a somewhat tense body. However, handler called her over and she quickly lost interest in the other dog, coming to handler and soliciting. She was returned without any issues. 7/24/19: While in the pens handler offered treats and Diya readily approached and took the treat gently. The handler moved their hand over her head and she rushed forward, growled and snapped.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the higher level warnings Diya has been displayed in the care center when uncomfortable, we feel she may be best set up to succeed in an adult only home environment at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Because Diya remains highly fearful in the care center and has been observed to escalate on multiple occasions when uncomfortable, we feel she may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess behavior when in a more stable environment. Force-free, reward based training only is advised as well as safe and appropriate management.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: During her assessment, Diya was introduced to a plush squeaky toy and was observed to become tense and growl when approached. Please refer to the handout for Resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: Although she has shown significant improvement, Diya exhibits some handling and touch sensitivity when interacting with staff members. Diya does solicit attention and accepts contact, but initially remains tense, wary and is startled with sudden movements. Diya should never be forced to interact or approach if she is not comfortable. Please refer to the handout for Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: On multiple occasions, Diya has been observed to growl, snap and bare teeth towards handlers. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
