Animal Profile

Tallie

Hello, my name is Tallie. My animal id is #229677. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/8/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Tallie is at risk due to behavior concerns in care. While she has demonstrated some progress in training sessions, Tallie has also displayed growling, snapping, and making contact without injury towards a handler's hand when they attempted to clip her collar. Tallie exhibits difficulty self-regulating and displays a high level of anxiety/fearfulness, often urinating on herself and hiding towards the back of her kennel when unfamiliar handlers attempt to leash her for walks. Medically, Tallie has dermatitis but is otherwise healthy.

Summary:: According to Tallie's previous owner(s), Tallie hides at first before approaching familiar dogs as well as with unfamiliar dogs, on/off leash. 08/11/25 Tallie is introduced at the gate to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Tallie will enter the pen with her hackles raised, avoiding the gate. Tallie displaces as she sniffs away from the gate, reluctant to approach. Tallie will walk past the gate line and as the female greeter dog jumps onto the gate playfully, Tallie growls at her. Tallie will run away on her own, reluctant to return to the gate. This concludes the interaction. 07/16/25 Tallie is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Tallie will approach the gate with a neutral frame, lacking focus as she looks past the novel male dog straight at the handler in the next pen, reluctant to greet the novel male dog. The novel male dog doesn't greet Tallie either, appearing aloof as he approaches the gate softly, paying Tallie no mind. The novel male dog remains soft, soliciting attention from the handler in his pen, while Tallie attempts to solicit attention from the same handler while in her pen, vocalizing at them. Tallie will walk away from the gate, disengaging from the interaction, as does the novel male. Tallie is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (3):: 8/11/25: Tallie is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. She then pulls ahead on the way to the yard for play group. In the yard, she would pace around and would greet the other dog at the gate with her hackles raised with whimpering/panting, and would begin to bark at the dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She pulls on the way back to kennel and enters with no issues. 08/05/25 (Trainer Note): Tallie is standing at the front of her kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. Handler throws a handful of treats and Tallie turns to engage with them. She turns back to the handler and begins to bounce up repeatedly, barking with hackles raised and a sweeping tail wag. Her body and face are soft. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Tallie is attached to a drag leash and initially struggles to focus, running around the room and jumping up onto handlers. Handler is able to direct her towards a snuffle mat that she engages with thoroughly. Handler works with her on being lured into taking a breath and then redirecting her onto the snuffle mat. She is able to focus for longer intervals the longer the session goes on. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (4):: 8/5: Tallie begins hard barking and growling with her hackles raised when a handler is standing beside her kennel, setting up the musical enrichment speaker. The handler checks on her and they can see her with her head lowered, hackles fully raised, while hard staring at the handler still growling. The handler drops treats into her kennel and walks away. 08/02/25: Staff report that when they were reaching slowly to clip her collar, Tallie snapped at their hand, making contact (no broken skin). Staff leash Tallie with their slip lead without issue. "Please clip my collar" tag has been removed. 08/01/25 (AM): Tallie's behavior remains consistent, please refer to the previous note dated 07/31 for more details. 07/31/25 (AM): As the handler approaches, Tallie jumps up and barks at the kennel door. He is easily leashed and guided to the play yard. Once outside, Tallie spends his time exploring the area. The handler tosses a ball, which Tallie will chase while it's in motion, but once it stops, he pounces on it briefly before losing interest. Treats are also tossed, and while Tallie shows mild curiosity, he does not eat them. Afterward, he is calmly escorted back to his kennel, where he is unleashed and safely secured. 07/30/25 (AM): Tallie is jumping up and down in front of her kennel door as the handler approaches her kennel. Tallie has her collar clipped to a drag leash by the handler and they would escort her to the training room. Tallie will walk over to the training room displaying a loose frame as she pulls slightly on her way over. Tallie will run into the room quickly, appearing to have the zoomies as she runs around the room. The handler will set out a puzzle feeder along with a puzzle game and Lick matt for Tallie. She goes around the room engaging with each item. Tallie will engage with a ball she is fond of, neglecting the soft toys around her. Tallie will bounce around the room, bouncing onto the handler as well. Tallie remains aloose in frame throughout her time with the handler, displaying a wagging tail and in some cases, vocalizing as she exuberantly bounces around the room. Tallie is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (5):: 7/28/25(PM): Tallie's behavior remains consistent with note from 07/27/25. (AM): Tallie is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins jumping at the door with heavy panting and barking as the handler unlocks it. She is able to be leashed when the handler tosses treats inside her kennel. She then pulls frantically with heavy panting on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, she would continue to pull frantically until crossing the street. She then begins to walk slightly ahead of the handler with a tense body and widened eyes. She would seek attention from the handler by siting and leaning into them. Due to her lip licking the handler doesn't interact and offers her treats that she eats. On the way back to the building, she begins to pull hard and frantically again and enters her kennel by bolting inside to the back. The handler is able to unleash her and tosses treats inside that she eats before locking the door and walking away. 07/27/25: Tallie is lying at the back of kennel as handler approaches. She comes forward and is leashed with ease, becoming loose and bouncy as she walks to the Canine Behavior Office. Tallie is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. She is loose and social with multiple handlers in the room and will jump up onto them excitedly. She engages with enrichment items and chases a tossed tennis ball. Tallie will demand bark intermittently and is refocused with toys or treats. After her session, she is returned to kennel safely. 07/26/25: Tallie approaches the front of her kennel when the familiar canine behavior handler approaches, she is quickly leashed and follows the handler to the behavior office where she quickly seeks attention and begin to play with the toys in the room. Tallie engages in a game of fetch with the handler, after that she stay near the handler allowing petting and plays by herself with a ball. She is returned to her kennel without issue. 07/26/25: Acs reports that Tallie displays a high level of fearfulness, and hides in the back of the kennel rolling over and urinating on herself when handlers attempt to take her out.

Summary (6):: 7/17/25: Tallie is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins jumping up and down as the handler unlocks the door. She is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. She is then taken to the behavior room for her assessment. Along the way, she would pull ahead frantically and jump up in down in front of the handler. In the room, she would pace around with heavy panting and jump up and down. She would jump up on the handlers and had red widened eyes. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She then pulls frantically back to her kennel and jumps at the door as the handler locks it and walks away. 07/16/25: Tallie is standing at the front of her kennel and allows handler Talaysia to leash her with ease. She is then escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on her, and she waits calmly until the playmate arrives. Upon the nose-to-nose greeting at the gate, Tallie displays signs of anxiousness, vocalizing, tail wagging, and pouncing on tip toes with a slightly stiff frame. After the session, Tallie is brought back to her kennel safely without any issues. 07/12/25: When the handler approaches the kennel, Tallie is observed lying down. As the kennel door opens, she gets up and approaches with a loose, relaxed body posture. She is easily leashed and escorted out of the care center for a walk. On leash, she walks beside the handler and gradually begins to loosen up, with her tail becoming mostly untucked as the walk progresses. She is escorted back to her kennel, where she is safely unleashed and secured. 07/11/25: When the handler approaches the kennel, Tallie is observed lying down. As the kennel door opens, she gets up and approaches with a loose, relaxed body posture. She is easily leashed and escorted to the Live Room. While on leash, Tallie explores the room briefly but stays close to the handler. Each time the handler moves independently, Tallie returns to apply body pressure against their legs. This behavior continues until she stops leaving the handler’s side entirely, remaining closely positioned and maintaining physical contact. The handler re-leashes Tallie and escorts her to the play yard. On leash, she walks beside the handler with a soft frame and a tucked tail. Once in the yard, Tallie explores and scents throughout the space. She appears more independent during this portion of the session, engaging less frequently with the handler and focusing on the environment. Tallie is then re-leashed and taken on a short street walk. On leash, she walks beside the handler and gradually begins to loosen up, with her tail becoming mostly untucked as the walk progresses. She is escorted back to her kennel, where she is safely unleashed and secured.

Summary (7):: 07/10/25 Talli is in the back of her kennel, curled into a ball displaying whale eyes. Talli will rise willingly and come forward as the handler unlocks the kennel door, displaying a tucked tail. Tallie will attempt to force her way out of kennel and the handler uses this to their advantage in order to leash her. Talli will quickly find shelter in between the handler's legs, attempting to hide there. The handler slowly guides her out of pre-exam and takes her to the live room. She will slip and slide as the floor is sightly wet, panting in the process. As they approach the live room, she doesn't enter until the hander does. The handler will place a slip lead onto her as she presses her whole body against the handler's legs. Once the slip lead is on due to her allowing the handler to do so, the handler will collar her as well in which she remains still for. In the process, she will urinate. Tallie explores the room with a slight tucked tail, eventually returning to the handler to solicit pets. She places her head on the handler's knee and will rest there, collecting pets. As the handler stops, she will nudge their hands to continue. The handler will return Tallie back to kennel after some time, walking back over to her kennel the same way she came over. Tallie will enter the kennel room as well as her kennel quickly. 07/08/25: When the handler approaches, Tallie is lying in the back of her kennel in a down position. The handler tosses treats into the kennel, and Tallie flinches as they hit the floor. She investigates by scenting the treats but does not consume them. Tallie then gets up and sits with her head and ears held low. The handler attempts to lasso Tallie, but she responds by crawling into a down position in avoidance. Despite this, the handler is able to leash her easily and escorts her to the Live room. On leash, Tallie attempts to scurry and looks for places to hide, while urinating intermittently. In the Live room, Tallie walks with body pressure against the handler, often trying to walk between the handler’s legs. The handler guides Tallie to a chair, where she tries to crawl under and between the handler’s legs. Tallie sits and allows the handler to pet her back. When the handler stands, Tallie again stays close, maintaining body contact by walking beside or between the handler’s legs. She continues to urinate intermittently while moving around. Tallie is then escorted back to her kennel. Although she attempts to scurry again, she appears more relaxed than before. She is safely unleashed and secured.
