Animal Profile

Corvette

Hello, my name is Corvette . My animal id is #234223. I am a desexed female orange cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 8/13/2025.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Corvette is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display shut down/avoidant behaviors when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful hoarding cat adjust to strangers.

Corvette is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she appears wary of human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

Behavior team requests gabapentin trial due to FAS in shelter for this cat and its kennel-mate. Unable to administer PO, will be placed in HV food so there is no way to ensure one cat doesn't eat both doses. Start gabapentin 100mg PO BID to be shared between cats. CTM and check in with FB team in 2 weeks. *Meds entered under Mercury 234224

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Corvette was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/17/25 FB79 Inside of her hidey box, Corvette has a very tightly wrapped/curled body with her eyes wide and dilated when i slowly bring my head above her for a better look. She doesn't not slow blink when i speak to blink at her and she remains very still and completely frozen as she stars at me. When i reach in and pet her head and back she lowers her head into the corner of the box and her ears tilt. 8/19/25 FB58 Sitting tightly curled in the corner of her box with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, and ears tilted. She is tolerant of touch and pets but remains tense and frozen. 8/25/25 FB61 Hunched on top of perch, huddled next to kennel-mate with front paws tucked, tail wrapped tightly around body and pupils dilated. She maintains focus on me when offered treats and remains frozen and trembling as I speak to her softly. When I offer a catnip toy, her and her kennel-mate retreat into their hidey-box in unison. Nervous babies, they need more time. It's a good thing they have each-other. 8/26/25 FB58 Back in hide box, tightly tucked into the corner with a tense face and body, head pulled into her body with eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted slightly. She watches me and remains frozen in place as I pet very briefly along her head and back with no reaction from her. Considering trying Gaba with her. 8/28/25 FB58 Hiding behind the box today - when the box is moved, she quickly darts into the cubby and sits in the litter box with a very tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted and tail wrapped tightly. Remains shut down and tolerates touch in the sense that she remains frozen and doesn't react or move. Adding to ARL and requesting Gaba today. 08/31/25 Vol Corvette was curled up in her bed, watching me with wide eyes. I petted her with the tool and then with my hand. She accepted being touched, but did not have any reaction. She seemed to be almost frozen still. I spoke to her and offered her treats and a toy but she did not show interest in them. After I ended the interaction, she jumped up onto the ledge to be with her sister, Mercury (234224).

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: During her evaluation, Corvette presented as very shut down and remained curled up in a tight ball. She tolerated touch but remained frozen and did not react to the assessor interacting with her. "Spirit cats" in a shelter context refer to cats who are very shy with people, preferring to live in a quiet environment and interacting with other cats rather than humans. They are often a good choice for patient, kind individuals who can create a safe and comfortable space for them to thrive. We cannot be certain whether or not Corvette will warm up to socialization in shelter or in a home environment and clients should be counseled on the potential of Corvette being a Spirit Cat. 8/30/25 When initially entering the shelter and adjusting, it was noted that Corvette was defecating in the box she was hiding in and a littler box monitoring log was placed. After two weeks and with another cat from her original home being cohoused with her, she has been using the litter box consistently with only 2 accidents when the log was fist place and 1 accident in the middle of the monitoring period. Given that she is a hoarding cat, the behavior team would always recommend she starts in a small room and that adopters monitor to ensure she is eating, drinking, and using the litter box correctly and consistently before they begin to expand her area of exosure.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Corvette would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Corvette is curled up tightly in the corner of her box with a tense face and body, face partly hidden. She remains in place and is technically tolerant of touch but remains tense and frozen, not reaction to any interaction. Pick up is not attempted.
