Animal Profile

Silly Sky

Hello, my name is Silly Sky. My animal id is #223100. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 4 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/25/2025.

Silly Sky has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She has chronic ear disease that needs long term medical therapy and, most likely, surgical intervention. She needs care and attention that we cannot provide. Behaviorally, Silly Sky as she has gotten comfortable enjoys her time with staff and volunteers. Typically she is found sitting alongside staff gettings treats and pets in the yard or on a walk.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. A staff member writes: Silly Sky is a joyful and energetic girl who loves her walks and making new friends! She prances and sprints ahead with a loose, happy body, full of excitement for every new adventure. She loves to check in with her handler for treats and affection, happily jumping up and leaning in for pets with a wagging tail. Silly Sky's playful spirit and loving nature make her a wonderful companion. If you're looking for a silly pup to brighten your days, Silly Sky is your girl! It could be with you! Date of intake:: 3/25/2025

Summary:: Lunged and growled towards a passing staff member, took treats with hard mouth

Date of initial:: 3/26/2025

Summary:: Loose wiggly body with wagging tail, becomes tense with exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Silly Sky so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 3/26/25: During his medical exam Silly Sky was observed to escalate to failing when his ears were palpated and when his blood draw was attempted.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and resource guarding we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Sky's previous owner states that she will hard bark and growl when people attempt to take food from her. We recommend that Sky be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in their future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Sky's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Sky's previous owner states that she has destructive behavior in the home with household items such as furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Sky will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Mouthiness: Sky has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Sky to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful/ Handling Sensitivity: During her medical exam Sky was observed to flail when her ear were touched and when they attempted a blood draw. It is important to always go slow and give Sky the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Sky would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Please see handout on Handling Sensitivity. On Leash Reactive: During intake Sky was observed to lunge and growl towards a handler passing by. During her stay Sky has been observed to lunge towards people on the street. Sky will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
