Lawrence displays on leash reactivity and barrier frustration towards other dogs in the kennels, engaging in kennel fighting when returning to kennels, including attempts to redirect onto staff. He has also been observed to display stress when in the kennel, pacing and panting with dilated pupils. He has shown discomfort with handling, growling at medical staff during intake, and maintaining a stiff square posture during handling assessment. He engages with enrichment items provided by handlers when in calmer settings. Medically, Lawrence is apparently healthy. Lawrence was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home enviornment is unknown. Lawrence has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has displayed stiff body language with handlers and kennel fighting. On one occasion, he attempted to redirect onto the handler while walking him past other dogs' kennels. Due to these concerns, we recommend fo him to be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope partner that can address these challenges with the use of force-free, reward-based training. Lawrence is a 4-year-old mixed breed who came to ACC as a stray, so his history is unfortunately a mystery. This handsome boy has struggled with the stress of the shelter environment and is showing us that he needs a quieter setting and a patient, experienced rescue to help him decompress. Lawrence can be tense and sensitive with handling and becomes highly aroused around other dogs, particularly while on leash or near kennel areas. Despite this, he is highly food-motivated, takes treats with a soft mouth, can be redirected with treats while out walking, and has shown that he can stop and settle when an activity ends. He will need an adult-only home through a rescue partner prepared to work with him using force-free, reward-based training. Lawrence is looking for someone who can see beyond his shelter stress and give him the structure, decompression time, and individualized support he needs to feel safe and begin showing more of himself outside of the shelter.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-dog history recorded. 08/22/26 Lawrence is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He approaches the gate with a square and forward frame, high-flagged tail and displays slight hackles along his spine.

Summary (7):: 9/24/26: Lawrence is barking and whimpering at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he then pulls hard on the way out of kennel and attempts to pull towards the dogs in kennels while on the way outside for a walk. Once outside, he has a loose body as he explores around and he would constantly stare up at the handler to receive treats. He would stare at dogs that were nearby and is able to be redirected with treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and attempts to pull towards the dogs in their kennels before quickly being placed back inside of his kennel. 9/12/26: Lawrence is barking at the front of his kennel door as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats, and he then tries to pull towards the dogs in their kennels with a tense body while on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a neutral body frame as he walks ahead to explore around. He is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats. He would stare at dogs nearby and is able to be redirected with treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and tries to pull towards the dogs in their kennels with a tense body. He has no interest in treats that the handler would toss on the ground before being quickly placed back into his kennel. 09/11/2026: Lawrence is reported to be intensely kennel fighting returning to kennel even with the use of a treat trail. In kennel he was observed to be heavily panting, pacing, and with dilated pupils. 9/10/26: Lawrence is barking at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease while being distracted with treats and he is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull ahead as he explores around. He would stare at dogs and people that were nearby and is able to be redirected with treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and attempts to pull towards the dogs in kennels with a tense body before reaching his kennel door. He is able to enter his kennel when the handler tosses treats inside. 8/30/26: Lawrence is at the front of his kennel with a square frame on his tip toes as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will pull hard to the behavior office where he is fitted with a collar while he eats some spray cheese. The handlers keep him on leash as he is tense and his eyes are wide throughout the entire session. After his assessment, he is returned to his kennel and secured safely. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Lawrence so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Lawrence is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Lawrence has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Lawrence associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the concerning behaviors displayed during his stay in care, we recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful: During his medical exam, Lawrence growled at staff. During his handling assessment, Lawrence remains stiff-bodied and square when interacting with handlers. He does not soften or display affiliative behaviors other than taking treats with a soft mouth. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Lawrence to associate certain handling with things he likes, such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on handling/touch sensitivity and the Decompression Period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration | Low threshold for arousal: Lawrence has been reportd to kennel fight as he is lead in or out of the room, and has attempted to redirect on the person walking him. Once out of kennel, he remains aroused. Please see handout on arousal and On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
