Buddyboy

Hello, my name is Buddyboy. My animal id is #225739. I am a male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/27/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Buddyboy is at risk for behavior reasons. Buddyboy came into care as a stray. He was in 2 previous homes and did not get along with the resident dog. In care, Buddyboy becomes aroused when interacting with novel items such as brooms, or the hose. He can tip into aggression when staff attempt to remove these items from him. He has a bite to staff members hand which caused some swelling, no broken skin. Medically, Buddyboy is healthy at this time.

This handsome guy was brought to the care center as a stray after being found by a kind family. While he was friendly and affectionate with his finders, he didn't get along with their resident dog, so he's looking for a home where he can be the only pet. Since arriving at the shelter, BuddyBoy has been social and sweet with staff and volunteers, always eager to say hello-especially if treats are involved! He's very food motivated, which makes training a fun and rewarding experience. BuddyBoy does have a few quirky behaviors that make him unique. He finds certain objects like brooms and hoses especially exciting and will engage with them in a playful, sometimes intense way. When he's focused on these items, he can become a bit over-aroused and will resource guard them. Because of this, BuddyBoy will thrive with an experienced dog owner who can manage his behavior and help him channel his energy in positive ways. What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home without cats or small animals. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Summary:: In the finders home it was reported that Buddyboy had gotten into multiple fights with the resident dog, with Buddyboy being the reported instigator. Buddyboy was reported to have never actually bit or draw blood from the other dog. 4.30.2025 Buddyboy met an altered female large mixed breed dog through a gate. Buddyboy had a soft body and greeted the dog, putting his paws against the gate and whining softly with a wagging tail. Buddyboy was easily walked away from the other dog.

Summary (5):: 05.30 Buddyboy is jumping on the kennel door upon arrival. He is difficult to leash, as he is rope biting. He continues to bite the rope after being leashed, until he is distracted with a toy. Buddyboy is taken to the yard and a drag leash is secured to him. He runs around the perimeter, then runs back to staff and jumps on them, getting mouthy, biting at their hands, applying medium pressure but not breaking skin. Buddyboy is distracted using toys and treats, but they don't hold his attention for long. Buddyboy grabs the broom in the yard and it is difficult to get it away from him, using treats. He then grabs the hose, and other staff members enter the yard to help. Buddyboy sees the other staff member approach and begins growling while holding the hose in his mouth. Once he sees staff member holding a leash, he rushes over to them and begins jumping up and down, trying to bite the leash while still growling. The staff member drops the leash, but Buddyboy continues to jump on them with an open mouth. A third staff member runs into the yard and throws treats down, distracting Buddyboy. As he eats the treats, a leash is secured and Buddyboy is walked out of the yard. He goes into his kennel and continues to jump around. 05.26 Buddyboy is jumping and barking at the front of his kennel. He is leashed using a treat and brought out to the yard, pulling hard on the way. A drag leash is secured to him and he runs around, exploring. He jumps in the pool and digs in it, splashing. Buddyboy finds a toy and engages in play. He grabs the hose in the yard and begins to chew on it, but staff distracts him with a treat to get it away from him. Buddyboy continues to play, with high energy, until it is time to return. He goes directly into his kennel and is given a treat.

Summary (6):: 05.14 A puperoni is used to assist in leashing Buddyboy. We walk into the yard and he sits for treats. We practice paws up. He steps one foot on and bowl and is treated. We practice this a few more times and he begins to put the second paw on the bowl. We practice drop it, a ball is thrown and when he returns with it. A treat thrown and the ball was picked up. We practice this for a few repetitions then Buddy begins to attempt to snatch ball and jump up towards handler. We stop playing and he is brought around the building. He walks next to handler with out pulling. 5/12: Buddyboy is easily leashed with a large milkbone. He is brought on a walk and he takes him time investigating smells keeping a loose leash. When walking back, he briefly jumps up to grab the leash, but trades for a treat. He is brought into the yard and walked around on leash. Handler sits at the bench, and he accepts pets remaining neutral. He returns without issue. 5/11: Buddyboy is leashed with a treat and walks out of the room. He is brought on a walk with an unfamiliar volunteer. He ignores the volunteer as they walk around the building. He is brought into the yard and let off leash. He engages in fetch, trading toys. He is lured into the pool with treats and will paw at them to make them surface so he can eat them. He remains soft/neutral throughout. 5/8: Buddyboy is easily leashed with the help of a treat. He walks out of kennel and is brought to the yard. He engages in a game of fetch but will refuse to drop his ball. Handler holds the next one until he drops the one in his mouth (intentionally or accidentally), YES! & toss. At times he will offer sit while still holding his ball. He will trade for treats inconsistently. He jumps up to grab the handler's rope but is easily redirected with a treat and returns without issue. 05.06 Buddyboy was jumping against the kennel door upon approach. A treat was used to leash, and he was brought to the yard. Once in the yard, he began to zoom. Staff picked up hose form the ground and Buddy began to engage in tug with the hose. Handler dropped the hose and threw a toy to distract Buddy. Buddy chased the toy and handler attempted to pick hose up again. He began to jump to up towards handler, lead was grabbed and he was leashed and brought back to is kennel.

Summary (7):: 5/5/25: Buddyboy was given a large milkbone and leashed while chewing. He carries it into the hall & finishes eating it. He is brought to the yard and as staff attempts to clip a drag leash he bites at the clip. Once he has the drag leash attached, he explores on his own grabbing soft toys and shaking them. He engages in play on his own. Staff holds a toy up and waits for him to drop the one he has before tossing. Once he finds a specific ball, he engages the remainder of the session. He allows to be leashed and unclipped, returned to kennel without dropping his toy. 5/3/2025: On this day, while an employee was spraying down the kennel area with a hose, Buddy boy was barking and jumping in the kennel next door. The hose was inadvertently positioned too close to buddy boy's kennel. Seizing the opportunity, Buddy boy reached through the kennel bars with his mouth, grabbed the hose, and pulled it forcefully into his kennel. Buddy boy held onto the hose with significant determination and did not release it for approximately three minutes. Eventually, he willingly dropped the hose. At that moment, another employee attempted to retrieve the hose, but its head became lodged between Buddy boy's kuranda bed and the kennel door. Using leash hook, the employee moved the kuranda bed back to free the hose. The hose was then successfully retrieved without further incident. 5/1/2025: Upon exiting his kennel, Buddy boy spontaneously picked up a broom and carried it into the yard. He maintained possession of the broom throughout his time outside, running and energetically shaking it in his mouth. Becoming fixated on the broom. At the conclusion of yard time, the handler successfully redirected Buddy boy's attention by trading the broom for a toy. Buddy was then leashed without resistance. He then returned to his kennel carrying his toy along the way. 4.29 Buddyboy is at the front of his kennel and is easily roped and brought to the yard. He has a soft and loose body on his way to the yard. In the yard Buddyboy approaches a broom in a corner and barks at it a few times before grabbing the brush end and playing with the broom as a toy. Budddy does not trade other toys for the broom or release it while playing with it. Once buddy does drop the broom staff is able to grab it and throw it out of the yard. Buddy then briefly plays with other toys before approaching staff when called and leaning into gently and soft pets. Buddy had a soft and loose body the entire time while outside. 04.28 Buddy is on his bed upon approach. He gets up and comes of the front of the kennel. When the leash presented he jumps up mouthing at the leash. The leash is secured and he is brought to the yard and kept on leash. He walk around with a high curved tail sniffing the ground. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Buddyboy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) Due to his potential to resource guard we feel that Buddyboy would do best in an adult only home at this time. SINGLE-PET HOME/ RECCOMEND NO DOG PARKS Due to behavior reported in the finders home we recommend Buddyboy not interact with other animals, and be the only pet in a home. PLACE WITH A NEW HOPE PARTNER Buddyboy has been deteriorating in care and becomes mouthy with staff, applying pressure. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Other,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: RESOURCE GUARDING Buddyboy has shown the potential to resource guard, being intense and holding onto toys and other items, like brooms, in the shelter. We recommend Buddyboy be left alone when he has a toy or is eating. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Buddyboy's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on resource guarding. BASIC MANNERS/POOR IMPULSE CONTROL It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control him impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. MOUTHINESS/POOR BITE INHIBITION Buddyboy has been mouthy throughout his stay. More recently he has begun to mouth at handler's hands applying more pressure. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Buddy puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. BITE HISTORY(HUMAN) Buddyboy had an incident in care while out in the yard. He began to bite at a staff member's hands. The bite did not break the skin but enough pressure was applied to cause some swelling. Please see handout on Bite History. LOW THRESHOLD FOR AROUSAL Buddyboy is easily aroused by certain items. He likes to engage in play with items such as the hose, or brooms. When he is interacting with these items he can tip into arousal. He will escalate to growling at staff should they begin to attempt and remove these items from his directly without providing an item of equal or higher value to trade. Please see handout on Arousal. OTHER: Buddyboy was briefly in two home prior to coming into the care center. Both homes had other dogs and described Buddyboy to be the instigator of altercations between the animals. Although Buddyboy has no known bite to another animal, due to known behavior submitted he should not interact with other animals out of precaution.
