Pre-Screener Form

Shylo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Initially, Shylo was fearful, refusing to exit his kennel and displaying persistent barking. Over time, he became more comfortable in the Care Centers. Shylo was noted to exhibit signs of arousal, including mounting, biting kennel bars and locks, leash biting, and barking at dogs housed above him. He gradually warmed up to staff through the use of treats. According to his owner, Shylo is shy at first but becomes social with strangers once he is comfortable. Medically, Shylo is apparently healthy.

Shylo has often refused to exit kennel, noted to pull back into kennel once leashed and is difficult to coax forward. With time an a slow approach, Shylo has shown improvements and is allowing easier handling exiting kennel. When outside of the shelter environment, Shylo is social, solicits contact with a soft body, and is treat receptive. We recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Partner that can provide adequate decompression time.

Summary:: 5/26/26: Shylo greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and soft wagging tail. He begins to whine. Off leash, he remains soft but mounts the other dog and can not be easily redirected.

Summary (5):: 6/18/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Shyloh loves the hose spray. 06/18/26: Shylo is observed in kennel to bite at his kennel bars and stand at the top of his kennel licking and biting at the top of his kennel wall. 06/17/26: Shylo is at the center of his kennel as handler approaches, he stands and approaches the front and accepts treats offered by handler before allowing leashing and following handler out the room and to the street for their walk. Outside Shylo is initially slow and vigilant of his surroundings, he is walked for a bit and quickly becomes more exuberant. He darts forward on leash occasionally and will pull toward people he passes in close proximity and is difficult to redirect. Shylo is walked for a while before being brought back inside, he allows handler to clip his leash but baulks at the front of kennel and needs to be muscled in with mild pressure to enter kennel.

Summary (6):: 6/9/26: Shylo is observed to be barking towards the top of his kennel towards the dog above him. 6/4/26: Shylo is loose and wiggly in his kennel. He bites at the lock with moderate speed and holds on and attempts to pull it back into his kennel. When the leash is presented, he bites onto it with moderate speed as well and holds it in his mouth pulling back just a few inches. After 10 seconds, he drops it. Once outside, he no longer fixates on the leash and walks with light leash tension. He pulls moderately towards other dogs, vocalizing (whining). He turns and grips the handlers leg in a mounting fashion, again with slow/medium speed, then lets go soon after without much prompting. He returns to kennel with ease. 5/30: Volunteer Note - Shylo was shy, affectionate, and calm. In the backyard, he stayed close to his handler and leaned into him for pets. Staff brushed his coat, and Shylo remained calm and relaxed throughout. His tail was never tucked. It stayed neutral or wagged during his interactions with staff. He ignored pigeons and calmly walked up to the next pen where another dog was. He wagged a bit, then disengaged on his own. Overall, Shylo is a sweet, shy boy, but he did not seem overly fearful during the interaction. 5/28/26: It is reported via white board that Shylo plays fetch and seems animated. 5/26/26: Shylo is at the front sitting. As handler speaks to him and inlocks the kennel, Shylo wags his tail and paws at the door. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. In the yard, he seeks handler attention leaning in and allows petting all over. He is easily returned to kennel. 5/25/26: Shylo is lying down in the kennel upon approach. Shylo has a lowered body and is tense and whale eyed. Treats are tossed into the kennel and Shylo does not move. Handler opens kennel and he shifts forward to eat the treats. Handler leashes him over the back of the head due to dodging the leash. Once the leash is on, Shylo does not move to exit. He approaches slightly then retreats back and stands off to the side. Handler stands off to the side to give him time to exit and he does not move. He lays down in the kennel. After a moment, handler ends the interaction and the leash is carefully removed with a hook.

Summary (7):: 5/25/26: It is reported that when a rat ran across Shylo's path, he tried to flee in the other direction and was reluctant to return to the pen the rat had been in. 5/21/26: Shylo is at the front of his kennel ears back. He takes treats from handler through the bars. He retreats when leash is presented. He is slowly lured forward to get his head through the loop. He is no longer interested in the treats. Handler is able to slowly reach in and drape the loop of the leash on him. Once secured door is opened wide. He sits at the back, slowly comes forward and sticks his head out before retreating and sitting again. He makes his way back to the front and sticks his head out. He sniffs a neighboring dog from his kennel, soft body and whining. Handler walks towards the hall and Shylo follows out to the hall. HE is walked to the street where he is low body, darting back and forth behind and in front of handler. Once on the sidewalk outside of shelter he tries to climb up the gate to get back in. He is walked to the yard where he explores. He is easily returned to kennel. 5/20/26: It was reported by staff that Shylo was not exiting kennel. When behavior team member approaches his kennel later on in the day, he laying near the front but leans his body weight away from the kennel door. Handler tosses in treats which he engages with. Handler gets higher value treats and he will take from handlers hand. Initially, He moves his head away from the leash but handler lures his head through the loop to get the cheese. This is repeated a few times before secured. The door is opened wide but Shylo moves to the back corner of his kennel. Treats/cheese are tossed and he will come forward but will not step out of kennel. Another handler assists and tries to lure him out of kennel using high value treats but he will stretch his body over the threshold without stepping out. Handler attempts to place pressure on the leash to get him out but he pulls back hard refusing to step out. Handler attempt for a few more minutes before ceasing due to stress levels.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Shylo is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Shylo.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Shylo has been observed to be highly fearful while in care noted to highly reluctant to exit kennel. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Shylo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Barrier Frustration: Shylo has been observed to bite the lock while handlers are unlocking the kennel. Leash Biting: Shylo has been observed to bite the leash while on a walk. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Arousal: Shylo has been observed to wrap his front paws around the handlers leg and mouth them. =Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Shylo to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
