Pre-Screener Form

Telanovela is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially Telanovela was obsvered to be highly fearful, noted to hard bark, growl, and snap at handlers when they attempted to leash him. Over time Telanovela warmed up to handlers and presented as exuberant and with a soft body. However, recently Telanovela has been noted to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to intensely bite the leash, jump up high and was very difficult to redirect. He is also obsvered to lunge at dogs before jumping at the handler. Medically, Telanovela is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

Summary:: 1/7/26: Telanovela greets another dog at the gate with a loose and wiggly body. He becomes aroused and begins to leash bite while waiting for the other dog to enter the pen.

Summary (5):: 1/11/26: Telanovela is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. He jumps up and attempts to bite the leash when the handler tries to leash him. Once he is leashed the handler tries to take Telanovela to the street. However, in the driveway he begins jumping towards the handler, when the handler straight arms him Telanovela thrashes before continuing to jump at the handler. Telanovela also chases pigeons and lunges at dogs before jumping at the handler. This behavior is not able to be easily redirected using treats. The primary handler requests assistances and a secondary handler tosses another leash on Telanovela. Once the second leash was placed on Telanovela he thrashes and jumps towards the secondary handler. When returning to kennel Telanovela pulls towards other dogs and is able to be placed into kennel. 1/10/26 For PM walk: Telenovela is observed to jump and mouth the leash on elevator, on sidewalk Telenovela intensely leash bites and very difficult redirect. Telenovela does respond to 'sit' command and takes treats but continues to jump to shoulder height while leash biting. Primary handler runs out of treats and calls for back-up to return Telenovela to kennel safely. 1/10/26: Staff reported that during Telanovela's AM walk he began to jump up exuberantly, tearing their PPE and attempting to jump towards their arms. 1/3/26 (For Assessment): Telanovela is lying down in kennel and stands up with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, Tela jumps on the handler with a soft body and solicits pets. After exiting, Tela sees a large dog in the hallway, but doesn't react. He also pulls towards a dog in crate by the ext but is redirected when the handler pulls him away. On the street, Telanovela walks ahead with no leash tension. He occasionally jumps on the handler for pets, and attempts to mouth their hands a few times. When walking back to the shelter, Tela briefly pulls on and off, but eases tension. Before entering the building, as a passerby speaks to Tela, he presents a wiggly body. Tela is then brought in for his assessment (see assessment notes), and afterwards, the handler brings him back to the room. Telanovela refuses to enter his kennel, so the handler adds leash pressure and muscles him in, and he enters on his own.

Summary (6):: 12/30/25: Telanovela is at the front of his kennel with a soft body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Telanovela walks ahead with mild to moderate pulling, on and off. Occasionally, he jumps on the handler with a soft body; at times, he will also mouth them. The handler gives him treats, but he shows no interest. When seeing other dogs (large and small), Telanovela looks them with a slightly tense body, but disengages when the handler calls his name. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Telanovela to kennel. 12/29/25: Telanovela displays the same behaviors as of yesterday (12/28). Please refer to those notes. 12/28/25: Telenovela is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull hard to sniff his surroundings and mark his territory. He had no reactions to dogs or people nearby. He is then taken to the yard, in the yard he would jump up on the handler and nudge his snout at their hand. He would not take treats and would shake off when the handler tries to pet him. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 12/28/25: Telenovela is lying down in kennel. He approaches the front and is easily leashed. Telenovela is taken to the street where he walks with a loose leash. He jumps on the handler with a wagging tail. Handler tries to toss him treats and he sniffs and does not eat it. Occasionally, Telenovela will jump up on the handler and press their nose on to the handler's hand. Handler turns away and straight arms him off. He is then walked back to the shelter and returned to his kennel without issue. 12/27/25: Telanovela is laying at the front of his kennel. Handler kneels and tosses in treats, he sniffs but does not eat them. When handler stands to unlock the kennel, he sits up and low growls. Handler sprays some cheese on the kennel bars and he engages with it as the door us unlocked and leash presented. He stops engaging with the treats but leaves his head low and allows leashing. He is walked on the street where he is tense bodied with tucked tail. He does not sniff and is hypervigilant, walking and looking around. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel.

Summary (7):: 12/25/25: Telenovela is at the back of his kennel as handler. He begins low growling as handler produces spray cheese and sprays it near the front of his kennel. He eventually approaches and softens while licking the cheese off the bars. Handler slowly unlocks the kennel door and produces the leash while attempting to crane it over Telanovela's head. He backs away and continues growling, handler produces more cheese and waits for Tela to re-approach the front, he is eventually leashed while distracted with the cheese and exits kennel following handler out to the street for his walk. Outside he walks with a tucked tail and stops and stares at people passing but shows no further reaction. He begins to pull moderately down the street and settles after a moment, stopping to sniff spots on the street. He walks for a while continuing to stop and stare at people before being brought back inside. At the front of kennel he does not enter so handler uses mild pressure to return him. 12/24/25: Telanovela is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and begins low growling and hard staring at handler, he is not interested in treats and continues to hard stare at handler while growling as they unlock the kennel door. A leash is produced and pushed toward Telanovela who sniffs it, handler moves it away and waits a bit while attempting to give soft encouragement, he responds by low growling again. Handler begins attempting to lasso his leash over Telanovela who yelps and shows teeth when the leash makes contact. After multiple attempts handler produces a pole leash and begins slowly attempting to leash him, Telanovela continues growling and vocalizing when the leash makes contact and dodges a few times before eventually being leashed. He immediately softens slightly and exits kennel without issue and walks hesitantly down the hall with handler out to the yard. Outside he is tense with a tucked tail and explores the yard for a while. He is hesitant to approach handler and pulls moderately when walking. After a while he is brought back inside and returns to kennel with mild leash pressure. A hook is used to remove his leash and interaction is ended shortly after.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Telanovela so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Telanovela's fearful disposition and capacity for defensive aggression, we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment Telanovela was observed to jump socially on handlers when excited and seeking attention. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: During his assessment Telanovela was observed to become exuberant and would lightly mouth handlers. this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Telanovela's teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: During his intake and during the beginning of his stay at the care centers Telanovela was reported to hard bark, growl and snap at handlers when attempting to leash him. It is important to move slowly with Telanovela, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Telanovela to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Telanovela has been obsvered to chase pigeons and jump at other dogs before turning towards the handler and jumping towards them. Telanovela will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low Threshold for Arousal: During the jogging portion of his assessment Telanovela began jumping up exuberantly toward the leash with an open mouth. When approaching the assistant shortly after he was jumpy and mouthy with them. This behavior has continued during his stay and has escalated to jumping towards the handler. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Telanvoela to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Telanovela. Please see handout on Arousal.
