What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog -to-dog history recorded. 09/25/25 Maverick is introduced to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. As Maverick is guided into the female dog's pen, Maverick will pull his way in displaying a tense body. Maverick immediately lunges for the helper dog with his paws extended, attempting to grab her while maintaining a tense frame. Maverick will let out a snarl before hard barking. He is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 08/25/25 Maverick is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Maverick will approach the gate with an exaggerated approach, launching himself towards the gate line very exuberantly. Maverick will toe-tap at the gate line, spreading his scent by kicking backwards. Maverick has dilated eyes appearing sexually motivated as he tracks the female dog with a high-flagging tail. Maverick becomes overstimulated, unable to focus and is returned to kennel. This concludes the interaction.
Summary (5):: 9/30/25: Maverick is lying in the center of his kennel as the handler approaches. He gets up and stands at the door with a neutral frame and is leashed with ease. Exiting his kennel, Maverick will pull moderately, searching for food on the ground. Outside, Maverick sniffs, pulling towards litter and food on the sidewalk. He will tense briefly when passing another dog but continues forward as the handler keeps walking. Maverick will respond to his name and kissy noises, sitting at the handler's feet while nudging their hand with his nose as they get a treat for him, which he takes gently. On the walk back towards the Care Center, Maverick sees multiple dogs from a distance and will tense slightly but disengages for treats. Upon entering the ramp, Maverick sees a dog that is playing in the yard and he tenses up with a high flagging tail. He will not disengage when the handler uses a kissy noise to redirect him but will follow directional leash pressure. He continues to look behind him with a tense and upright posture as they walk further down the ramp. He is able to take treats once at the bottom of the ramp. Maverick pulls moderately to his kennel where he is secured safely.
Summary (6):: 09/25/25 (PG Note): Maverick was lying at the front of his kennel and slowly rose, allowing the handler to leash him with ease. He was escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside, a drag leash was placed on him and he was walked to the greeting gate. During a nose-to-nose greeting, Maverick stood on his tiptoes, raising his tail stiffly, and kicked his back legs in an attempt to appear larger. When the gate was opened, his playmate attempted to initiate play but Maverick responded by growling and attempting to grab her neck. He was immediately pulled back and removed from the yard, then safely returned to his kennel without further issues. For more information, see dog-to-dog note 09/21/25 Maverick is standing on his kennel door, panting with a loose body. He is easily leashed and taken for a walk. Maverick exits his kennel displaying a loose body as he pulls mildly on leash. Maverick is treat motivated, sitting willingly when soliciting treats. Maverick will catch treats when tossed due to taking them roughly when administered. Maverick will attempt to fixate on dogs on the walk, however, as the handler see's Maverick look in their direction, they distract him with a squeaker and treats. Maverick is returned to the facility where he enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 9/19/25: Maverick is observed to be jumping on to his kennel door and barking/screaming, and continues to do so during cleaning time. 09/16/25 (Trainer Note): Maverick is standing at the front of his kennel, panting moderately with dilated pupils as the handler approaches. He jumps up onto the door as the handler goes to unlock it. The handler attempts to leash but Maverick is pawing repeatedly at the door and gets his foot through. He moves away from the door and the leash slips off, allowing the handler to attempt again. The handler uses treats to lure him through and Maverick follows without issue. He pulls hard to the canine training room and allows the handler to attach a drag leash. Maverick maintains a moderate pant and dilated pupils throughout the interaction. He moves frenetically around the room, jumping up onto handlers, but is easily redirected. He engages readily with the various enrichment items, but has difficulty with the slow feeders, increasing the intensity of his pant and his body language as he digs at the feeder and attempts to get the food out. The handler removes the slow feeders and switches to just snuffle mats and Maverick improves. He begins to relax and orient towards the handler between items, though he does so intermittently. At the end of the session, he is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 9/11/25: Maverick is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he pulls hard on the way to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he is comfortable being petted and would take treats and explore around. He would pick up the toy as the handler uses the assessment hand to grab it and then would drop it. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 9/9/25: Maverick was standing at front of kennel as handler approached. He was leashed with ease and walked to the yard. Maverick consistently appears housetrained and relieved himself once outside. Maverick was mellow and social with handler throughout interaction. He briefly engaged in fetch, politely swapping tennis balls each time, but preferred to lay down in the grass and chew on them. Maverick appeared at ease. He was returned to kennel with his tennis ball. 08/28/25: Maverick is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls hard outside. Maverick takes treats with a soft mouth and is returned to kennel without issue. 08/26/25 Maverick is jumping onto his kennel door exuberantly as the handler approaches. As he drops to all fours, he is leashed and taken out for a walk. Maverick displays a loose frame, pulling on lead and marking in the hallway before exiting the building. Maverick maintains his loose frame as he explores and continues to mark on walk. Maverick will sit willingly when soliciting treats, taking them gently when administered. Maverick becomes slightly aroused, beginning to hop and pull-on leash but will self-regulate almost instantly, returning to a slower pace. Maverick is returned to the facility entering the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 8/25/25: Maverick is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is taken to the play yard for play group. Along the way, he would stop to mark his territory constantly. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and flagging tail. He would kick his back legs as he would sniff the other dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. On the way back to his kennel, he would begin to pull hard with a tense body and hard stare at dogs as they passed by. While passing through the Adoptions A dog room, he begins to bark and pull towards the dogs in kennels with a tense body. He then would begin to growl and would turn around and face the handler as they continued walking. When reaching his kennel room, the handler is able to clip him and while waiting for another dog to get in their kennel first. He begins alligator rolling an biting at the leash. A second handler is able to double leash him and he is then placed back into his kennel. The handler is able to retrieve their leashes with a hook.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Maverick be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Maverick's behavior displayed while in care, we recommend he be the only pet in the home along with avoiding all dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression:During his medical exam, Marrick showed mixed signals—he displayed a wagging tail and distance-decreasing behavior but also presented with a tense body and intermittent head-whipping. A soft muzzle was placed as a precaution, and he did not escalate further. Training should focus on cooperative care, slow desensitization to handling, and reinforcing calm behavior to build trust. Please see the handout on Fearful / Potential for Defensive Aggression. Leash-Biting / Low Threshold for Arousal / On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration:Marrick has a low threshold for arousal and displays significant on-leash reactivity and barrier frustration. He reacts to nearby dogs with a tense body, hard stare, barking, growling, and pulling, and has redirected onto the leash with alligator rolling and biting when over-aroused. Training should include impulse control exercises, counterconditioning to dog proximity, and redirection strategies using toys or food to manage arousal levels. Please see the handout on Leash-Biting / Low Threshold for Arousal / On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration Kennel Presence:In the kennel, Marrick is highly reactive, jumping on the door and screeching as handlers walk through the room. This behavior suggests barrier frustration and overstimulation. Visual barriers, enrichment, and structured out-of-kennel time can help reduce stress and improve his kennel behavior. Please see the handout on Kennel Presence. Strength / Leash Pulling:Marrick pulls hard on the leash. Training should focus on loose-leash walking techniques, using appropriate walking tools like a front-clip harness, and reinforcing calm walking behavior to improve control and safety. Please see the handout on Strength / Leash Pulling
