Kratos
Hello, my name is Kratos. My animal id is #236201. I am a male brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/8/2025.
Kratos is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Despite our best efforts to keep him comfortable Kratos is obsvered to be highly stressed while in kennel. Noted to be bouncing off the side of his kennel, spinning and throwing himself against the transfer door repeatedly. This behaviors have been obsvered even when the room is quiet. Medically, Kratos is apparently healthy.

Noted to be bouncing off the side of his kennel, spinning and throwing himself against the transfer door repeatedly. This behaviors have been obsvered even when the room is quiet. Medically, Kratos is apparently healthy. Meet Kratos! Kratos is a ~2-year-old large mixed breed who arrived at ACC as a found stray. Shelter life has been overwhelming for him, and he's looking for a calm, experienced foster or adopter through one of our New Hope partners. My Ideal Home A quiet, adult-only home that will go slow, give Kratos choice, and let him decompress at his own pace. Predictable routines, a low-traffic environment, and positive reinforcement will help him feel safe and start to build confidence. Good with Kids? Recommended adult-only (no children under 13) due to fearfulness and stress in new situations. Good with Other Pets? Limited info. On walks he has noticed other dogs but generally kept moving. Any dog introductions should be slow and structured. Cats: unknown. Leash Manners Handling sensitivity in-kennel; once outside he can walk ahead with light to moderate pulling and may jump when anxious. Choice-based leashing, quiet routes, and short "sniffari" breaks will set him up for success. Behavior Determination & Other Notes Level 3. Kratos has displayed high fear, stress, and anxiety in the shelter (freezing, seeking escape, occasional growling). He benefits from distance, quiet, and consent-based handling. Training priorities: decompression, gradual confidence-building, and reinforcing voluntary engagement-always using force-free methods. Other Fun Facts Once he warms up, Kratos shows curiosity on walks and will check in with his handler. Food puzzles, lick mats, and calm companionship can help him relax and learn that good things happen at a gentle pace.

Summary (3):: 10/28/2025 (Trainer Note): Kratos is observed to be bouncing off the side of his kennels, spinning, and repeating the behavior. He is also throwing his body against the transfer door. This is observed during cleaning time. 10/25/25- Kratos is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he is easily leashed and had a mild pull towards the passing kennels. He is taken for a street walk, he follows the command to sit in the elevator and is rewarded. He takes treats with mild pressure. When on the street Kratos walks on a loose leash and does check ins with handler, he is rewarded. When handler stops walking Kratos automatically sits and he allows handler to scratch his head and neck. While sitting there is a loud sound and Kratos lowers his head and moves away from the sounds with ears slightly pinned. Handler presents a treat and follows them, taking it from them. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 10/22/25: Kratos is standing neutral frame toward from of kennel as handler approaches. Kratos stands on hind-legs, front paws on kennel as handler unlocks kennel door. A treat lure is used to drop Kratos to all 4's and is leashed easily. Kratos exits kennel with mild pulling. On elevator Kratos sits when handler reaches into treat pouch, takes treats gently. Kratos on sidewalk is neutral frame, walks ahead of handler with ears pinned back, is pulling mildly. Kratos allows petting with neutral-soft body. Kratos continues to sit for treats, also continues to check in with handler for verbal cues, sits when Kratos sees handler reaches into treat pouch. Kratos re-enters MACC and kennel safely.
Summary (4):: 10/17/25: Kratos is quiet at front of kennel with loose body, as kennel door is unlocked Kratos becomes more exuberant, wagging tail and briefly stands on hind legs with front paws on kennel door. Kratos is easily leashed with a treat, exits kennel with mild but consistent pulling out of kennel room. Kratos stops to sniff occupied pop-up crates in hallway, is easily redirected with mild leash pressure. Exiting MACC driveway Kratos sees a SMB with staff, Kratos becomes slightly tense, visually fixates and slows walking pace. He does not redirect for treats or verbal cues, moderate leash pressure is used to pull Kratos away. Kratos recovers to walk with neutral frame, walks ahead of handler with ears pinned back. During walk Kratos frequently checks in for verbal cues from handler, takes treats each time. Kratos sees a MMB with MOP, Kratos becomes tense and visually fixates again. This time however Kratos responds to verbal cues, takes treats from handler as the MMB increases distance. Kratos is returned to MACC and kennel without issue, takes teats dropped into kennel. 10/15/25: Kratos is at the front of the kennel with a soft body with a wagging tail. He is easily leashed with a treat lure. Kratos Walks to the street ahead of the handler with mild to moderate pulling. He hard stares at dogs and is called away. Kratos doesn't not relieve himself and is walked back to the shelter. He stops to stare at dogs again and is redirected with treats. He will sit for treats. Handler then walks him back to his kennel and is returned without issue. 10/12/25: Kratos is at the front of his kennel with his feces spread all over his kennel. As handler opens the kennel door and attempts to leash him, Kratos would attempt to pull the handlers leash into the kennel. A treat lure is then used which was successful, he is then removed from his kennel and would have a mild to hard pull out of the room. Kratos is then taken for a street walk where he would remain aloof and continue a mild pull ahead of the handler. Handler would call his name, he would turn around and sit which handler would then toss a treat. As a dog was passing by across the street, Kratos would turn towards them very briefly but continue to walk ahead with no issues. Shortly after, he is then returned back to his kennel with no issues. Once a couple of minutes would go by, as the handler would pass Kratos's kennel he would begin to low growl as handler would passby.
Summary (5):: 10/12/25: It was noted on the whiteboard that Kratos is slamming into the transfer door. 10/10/25: Kratos has been observed to spin around in kennel, as well as jumping up by the transfer door, which startled the dog on the other side of the transfer door (Dave). 10/8/2025 (LATE ENTRY/ Trainer Note): Kratos is observed to become tense bodied, low growl, and hard bark at staff member that walks past his kennel. He is offered a treat and becomes a bit softer, gently taking the treat through the kennel bars. 10/5/25: Kratos is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body and wagging tail as handler approaches. He begins jumping at the door as the handler attempts to leash him. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would continue to pull hard ahead and hard stare at people and dogs with a tense body. He is able to be redirected and sit for treats. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he has a loose body and would explore around the room to find treats and toys and was comfortable being petted. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 10/4/25: Kratos is at the front of his kennel with a loose body. As the handler begins to unlock his kennel door, he vocalizes in a high-pitch, paws at and jumps on the kennel door repeatedly. When the handler attempts to leash Kratos, he continues to jump up, tangling himself in the leash. The handler is able to untangle him from the leash, and uses a treat to lure him into the leash. Kratos is brought out of the kennel, and as he is walking out, his body is slightly turned in the direction of the kennels. Once out the room, Kratos approaches a familiar handler who is making food. That handler gives him some food, which he eats. During the elevator ride, Kratos jumps onto the handler twice with a loose body. Once outside, he relives himself. He sees another dog nearby, and pulls towards them, but turns away when he walks in the opposite direction. Kratos then walks around a lamppost twice, and he briefly notices two passersby who speak to him. During the majority of the walk, Kratos walks ahead of the handler with some tension on the leash. When walking back to the shelter, two dogs are walking in the direction of the handler and Kratos. Kratos begins to focus on them, but the handler crosses the street and he removes his focus. Before entering the building, two dogs and handlers are present, but Kratos does not react to them. The handler clips the leash during the elevator ride. While walking to his kennel, Kratos has his attention on the kennels. He is returned to his kennel and the leash is removed with ease.
Summary (6):: 9/27/25- Kratos is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, he is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash and has a mild pull towards spots to sniff. He checks in with handler and gently takes treats. He has no reaction to any stimuli. He is social with handler and follows the command to sit and is rewarded. He allows handler to pet his head, neck and back. He is easily clipped and returned to his kennel without issue. 9/19/25: Kratos is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and tucked tail as the handler approaches. When the handler unlocks the kennel, Kratos' body becomes looser with a wagging tail. He is leashed with ease, and pulls out of the room. Before entering the elevator, he relieves himself. He also does not react to another handler and dog when they walk past. During the elevator ride, Kratos jumps on the handler twice. The leash gets tangled on his body, so he allows the handler to untangle him. During the street walk, Kratos walks ahead of the handler with little tension on the leash. He also jumps on the handler a few times again; the handler gives him the sit command, but he does not follow it. Before crossing the street, Kratos keeps looking behind him, where there are people behind him. While walking back to the shelter, Kratos adds more tension to the leash, pulling slightly hard. The handler clips their leash and returns Kratos with ease. 09/11/25: Kratos is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed easily placing his own neck into the leash before exiting kennel and walking with handler out to the street for a walk. During his walk, Kratos pulls moderately and stops to sniff and use the bathroom outside. Kratos will attempt to sniff people in close proximity of him but will generally ignore most people he passes. When seeing a dog he is tense and stares frozen for a moment but continues walking even after the other dog begins reacting to him. He turns while walking away to look at them but continues. Kratos walks with handler for a while more before being brought back inside. He allows handler to clip his leash before returning to kennel. At the front of his kennel he stops and sniffs, handler tosses treats and Kratos moves closer but does not enter kennel, handler uses slight muscle to return Kratos.
Summary (7):: 09/10/25: Kratos is laying at the center of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and begins low growling at handler who makes minimal eye contact with Kratos and crouches down while attempting to coax him forward with more higher value treats, he remains uninterested while continuing to low growl at handler with a tense body. Handler unlocks the kennel door and opens it slightly and uses a soft voice to attempt to coax Kratos forward. Kratos approaches the front but will shy away when the leash is introduced, handler grabs a pole leash and is able to gently guide the leash over Kratos head and leash him successfully. Kratos remains tense and frozen, handler waits at the side of the kennel allowing Kratos to come out in his own time. Kratos takes a while to approach the front and sniffs around the kennel and peeks his head outside until he eventually works up the courage to exit kennel. He is tense and his tail is tucked when he reaches the hall, he stares at the staff in the hall and freezes up when seeing the hallways activity. Staff members are told to exit the hall and a squeaker is used to coax Kratos forward who walks with handler out to the yard. Once outside Kratos begins walking around the perimeter of the yard with handler, when offered treats he ignores them and begins sniffing around briefly. He stares at a dog he passes in a neighboring play yard but is coaxed forward with handler. Kratos will slowly enter play yards and exit shortly after but begins exploring and sniffing more freely the more he enters the play yards. Eventually Kratos begins to loosen his body posture and continues to walk with handler without issue. After a while he is brought back inside, he enters kennel without issue and a hook is used to remove Kratos leash, he flinches hard at the hook and retreats to the back of kennel but eventually allows the leashes removal, interaction is ended shortly after. 9/9/25: Kratos is laying at the back of the kennel when the handler approaches. As the handler is unlocking the kennel door Kratos begins seeking exit at the back of the kennel. Attempting to crawl up the sides of the kennel. The handler speaks in a soft tone and Kratos begins to urinate on himself while circling at the back of the kennel. He then goes back to seeking exit at the back of the kennel. As the handler is placing the lock back on the kennel door Kratos urinates on himself again. The handler ends the interaction due to the high levels of FAS.

Summary:: Barking and growling towards handlers
Date of initial:: 9/8/2025
Summary:: Standing near kennel door growling. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Kratos so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an experienced adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Kratos has been observed to seek exit and urinate on himself when handlers attempt to interact with him. It is important to always go slow and give Kratos the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Kratos would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Kratos has been observed to hard stare and pull hard towards dogs and people while on leash. This behavior is able to be redirected using treats. DOG will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
