Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Marco came into care with a male LMB. 07/12/26 Marco is introduced to a novel male while off leash. She approaches the gate and will tense slightly and display whale eye and pinned ears as the male comes to the gate with a loose, wiggly frame. When the male play bows she becomes increasingly tense and will vocalize.

Summary (4):: 09/25/26 (Trainer Note): Marco is standing on her hind legs at the front of kennel, frantically pawing at the door, pupils dilated, heavily panting, hypersalivating, and anxious barking. Her entire kennel door is covered in saliva. She is leashed and taken to the community room for a training session. She briefly sniffs around before approaching handler. She takes treats gently and handler conations the marker. Handler moves on to playing the ping pong pattern game and Marco readily participates and remains engaged throughout interaction. She is taken back to her kennel without issue. She immediately begins to display the same behavior mentioned prior to her coming out. 9/23: Staff report that Marco is still bouncing off her kennel walls while barking persistently throughout the day. 09/17/26 (Trainer Note): Marco is laying on her bed as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. She stands in the room with a lowered body, but wags her tail when the handler speaks to her. The handler sets up a variety of enrichment items and Marco engages with each one. She leans into contact with a soft body and is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 9/14/26: Marco is standing on her kennel door, barking in a hoarse pitch. Smeared saliva can be seen on the glass and on the floor of her kennel. She will spin off the kennel door and begin bouncing off the kennel walls, still barking. The room is mostly quiet as 2 handlers walk through. 9/13/26: Marco is at the back of her kennel laying on her bed as the handler approaches. As the handler opens the door, Marco will run to the front of her kennel and grab a piece of linen that was in front of the kennel and then bring it to her kuranda bed and shake it. The handler coaxes her forward with a treat which she takes roughly but the handler is able to put the leash on her while she chews it. She will then exit the kennel and is brought out for a long walk. While on the ramp, the handler clips their leash to her collar so she can use more of the length of the leash. Throughout the walk, Marco will remain close to the handler but will occasionally explore at the end of the leash. She will check in with the handler frequently, leaning into contact and reengaging after consent checks. When returning to the Care Centers, she will walk on a loose leash through the building and into her kennel where she is secured safely with no issue. 09/11/26: Marco is observed to be jumping on his kennel walls, bouncing off of them while spinning, and barking during quiet time. His kennel door was covered in saliva. 9/6/26: Marco is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins jumping and barking at the door as the handler unlocks it and is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. Once leashed, she is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she has a loose body as she walks next to the handler and is comfortable approaching to receive pets and treats. She is then taken to the yard. In the yard, she would explore around with sniffing and engages in a tennis ball while also approaching the handler to receive treats. She is able to return back to her kennel no issues.

Summary (6):: 9/8/26: Marco is seen throwing herself hard against her kennel door while hard barking, grumbling, pacing, and hyper-salivating. Her kennel door becomes soaked with saliva by the time the staff member leaves the room. 9/1/26: Marco is reported to be persistently jumping and barking at the kennel wall shared with another dog. The handler reported that she continued to fixate on the wall even after they opened the door. They had to use treats to get her attention and leash her. 8/30/26: Marco is at the front of her kennel jumping at the door, pressing her chest and front paws up against the glass. She is vocalizing and hypersalivating at the door as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and will exit her kennel quickly, pulling moderately down the hallway. Once outside, she will walk with a loose leash though panting heavily and maintaining a flushed face throughout the walk. She will sit with a handler at a bench and will stand until the handler lures her to lay down. She will briefly stop panting as she is laying down but will then continue. She is then returned to kennel where the handler will scatter some treats for her to eat while they lock the kennel door. 8/16/26: Marco is at the front of the kennel with a loose frame as she jumps onto the kennel door. She is leashed with ease and brought out to the yard. She will sniff around the yard and lean into contact with a loose frame. After a while, Marco is returned to kennel with no issue and secured safely. 8/9/26: Marco is at the front of the kennel with her paws on the door as the handler approaches. She is then leashed with ease and brought to the behavior office. She is then brought out to the behavior office where she will engage with some enrichment stations. After a while, she will approach the handler and leans into contact, re-engaging after consent checks. The handler will then work on teaching Marco to lay down. She will lay down readily so the handler will work on increasing the duration. She is successful with holding down for 3-5 seconds at a time. Marco is then returned to kennel with no issue and secured safely. 07/26/26 (Reassessment): Marco is laying down on her bed as the handler approaches. She comes forward slowly and allows the handler to leash her. In the office, Marco explores and eats a few treats. She runs back and forth between the handlers, leaning in for pets. After her assessment, she is brought back to kennel with no issue. See Behaviour Assessment for more details.

Summary (7):: 7/13/26: Marco is standing at the front of her kennel with a wagging tail as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she would explore around while sniffing and stare at dogs and people that would pass by. She is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats. While in the yard, she engages in a few toys. She is able to return back to her kennel with no issues. 7/12/26 (playgroup): Marco is at the back of the kennel as the handler approaches. She is sitting on her kuranda bed with a tucked tail but the handler will coax her to the front with baby talk and she is leashed with ease. Marco will slowly walk out of kennel and to the play yard where she will greet another dog. She is then returned to kennel with no issue and secured safely. (See dog-dog for more info) 07/11/26: Marco is lying at the back of kennel with an anxious frame, tucked tail as handler approaches. She slowly comes forward and will take treats through the kennel bars. Marco is a bit wary of leashing but is easily leashed with treats and a slow approach. Marco walks to the Canine Behavior Office where she will slowly approach multiple handlers and accept light brief petting with a neutral frame. She gives "paw" and will sit for treats. After her session, she is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely. 7/11/26: Marco is standing at the front of her kennel with a wagging tail as handler approaches. She then becomes tense and retreats to the back of her kennel as the handler unlocks the door. She is able to be slowly leashed when she re-approaches the door and is then taken outside for a walk. She continues to have a tense body as she is taken to yard. In the yard, she has a neutral body as she would watch and stare at people and dogs that would pass by. She has no interest in treats or toys. She is able to slowly return back to her kennel with no issues. 7/10/26: Marco is laying down on her bed with a tense body as handler approaches. She remains laying down on the bed as the handler tosses treats inside for her. She would remain laying down as she eats the treats and would slowly back her head away as the handler slowly leashes her. Once leashed, she is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she has a tense body as she walked next to the handler, and she would constantly stop walking and look behind herself. She has no interest in treats or toys and has no reactions to dogs or people. She is able to slowly return back to her kennel with no issue.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Marcos high level of fearfulness, we recommend that she be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Marco has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that she should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Marco associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges comments:: Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: On intake, while in the crate Marco would howl, growl, bark, snarl, and hard stare at officers. Marco quickly calmed once being taken out of the crate, but escalated during vaccinations. During vaccinations Marco bark, growled, snarled, jumped, and snapped at medical staff. Staff were able to place Marco in her crate, and remove the leash with a hook.These observations suggest that Marco may escalate to defensive behaviors during stressful handling or medical procedures and would benefit from low-stress handling techniques, gradual introductions to procedures, and careful attention to her body language to minimize fear and prevent escalation.
