Dolce Vida
Hello, my name is Dolce Vida. My animal id is #228130. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/28/2025.
Dolce Vida is At Risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially when she entered the Care Center, Dolce was fearful, showing tense and trembling body; refusing walks. Throughout her stay Dolce Vida has warmed up to handlers however has become increasingly reactive on walks, pulling hard toward dogs with tense body and vocalizing loudly. She is not able to be redirected. When passing people Dolce becomes tense and stares. With handlers she has a wiggly body. Medically, Dolce Vida has alopecia, Conjunctivitis, demodicosis, dermatitis, lactating, and unspecified abnormality.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...
What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Dolce Vida is the most loving dog I have ever met. Anytime we sat down, she didn't miss an opportunity to climb into my lap for pets. I don't know what Dolce Vida's life was like before she arrived at the ACC, but her being so open to love and pets shows how extremely resilient she is. While she definitely does pull on the leash, I would stop anytime she pulled and she learned that she shouldn't pull as hard. By the end of our Boroughbreak, she was walking much better on the leash. She knows how to do "sit" and "down," and waits very patiently at the crosswalks when the light is red. I wish I could have spent more time with her. She's so sweet and will be the perfect cuddle bug for anyone who is willing to have a little patience and give her some training.

Summary (5):: 6/30/25: It was written on the whiteboard that Dolce Vida "flipped the barrier in the yard, grabbed onto the fence and got teeth stuck in the fence" 06/29/25: Dolce Vida is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered treats and takes one but begins jumping at the kennel door while whimpering and pawing at the door. She is leashed and quickly lifted out of kennel, before even reaching the ground she begins to squeal and scream very intensely. She is very difficult to redirect and continues screaming and pulls out to the yard for her walk. While outside she continues to vocalize until she reaches the back of the yard. While outside she is frantic and hyper vigilant, after a bit she continues to frantically vocalize. Due to her clear signs of stress handler returns Dolce to kennel and interaction is ended.
Summary (6):: 6/27/25: It was reported that when a handler took Dolce out of the kennel for a walk, She got loose and ran into one of the kennel rooms, barking at the dogs. Handler secures her and brings her to the street for a walk but because she was reacting to all the dogs on the street she had to be returned to the building early. During another walk in the yard, it was reported that she was vocalizing towards the wall. 6/25/25: Dolce Vida is at the back of the kennel lying down quietly. She approaches with a fast wagging tail and a tense body. She is whimpering. Handler lifts her out of the kennel and places her on the ground. Dolce Vida pulls hard towards the backyard. She is brought to the first pen for a dog-dog interaction. After, she is brought to the rear pen where she jumps up on the handler repeatedly and frantically with a strained expression. She is offered treats and Dolce takes them with a hard mouth. After she is walked back to the shelter. A dog is barking in the front pen and she vocalizes loudly. Dolce is then brought to her kennel and returned without issue. 6/22/25- Dolce Vida is sitting in the middle of her top kennel shaking and whining while heavy panting when handler approaches. She is easily leashed and she she starts to get very wiggly, tapping her paws and lowering her body to the ground. She starts to whine more loudly. Handler gives her a treat which she takes with slight pressure. Handler taps their shoulder and she slowly comes more to the front. She allows handler to pick up her front and slide her a little more out to pick up her bottom. Once she is placed on the ground she pulls hard in various directions while vocalizing. Dolce vida is taken for street walk. She has a slight tense body on the street and continues to pulls hard. When people pass her she pulls towards them to greet. Handler presents treats and she comes to handler and takes them. Occasionally she will walk on a loose leash then go back to pulling hard. Handler pets her back and she goes belly up, she allows handler to scratch her belly. She wiggles her body and grumbles. Dolce vida is taken to the play yard and placed on a drag leash. She continues taking more treats and walking around the pen. She follows handler to the pool, she didn't go in but allowed handler to put water on her head and her back. She followed handler to the bench and jumped up with them. She leans into handler and she allows them to pet her side. Another handler comes into the pen and she greets them with a soft body. They pet her neck and she slides down against their legs and goes belly up. Other handler pets her back and she goes wiggly, she gets a little mouthy with other hander while being wiggly on her back. First handler calls to her and she comes to them. Dolce is easily releashed her and she allows handler to pick her up and she is returned to her kennel without issue.

Date of intake:: 5/28/2025
Summary:: Loose and wiggly, allowed all handling, whined and barked frequently, lifted into kennel
Date of initial:: 5/29/2025
Summary:: happy, lots of energy, no signs of aggression, sweet dog
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dolce Vida so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No Young Children (Under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Dolce Vida was observed throughout her assessment to jump on handlers and paw at them to solicit attention and counter surfed frequently. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Mouthiness: Dolce has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Dolce to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful: Dolce has been observed to have a tense body and refuse walks. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Dolce would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: During her initial intake Dolce Vida was reported to intensely whine and bark at times. We have no history on her behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Dolce has been observed to become tense and stare at people while on leash. She has also been observed to pull hard towards dogs while vocalizing loudly. Dolce will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
