Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Cece is in need of emergency placement due to behavioral concerns. Cece is fearful and reluctant to walk at times, needing to be carried out and back to her kennel. She does show some social behaviors to select handlers but remains overall fearful. Medically, Cece is apparently healthy. Cece was surrendered to the Care Center due to landlord issues. Cece is described as an initially fearful dog who needs time to warm up to new people. In the home, she is reported to enjoy playing with various toys, follows her owner from room to room, and has a medium energy level. In the Care Center, Cece has been slow to warm up to select handlers and is reluctant to walk. Once removed from her kennel, Cece pancakes and refuses to walk back to her kennel; handlers have had to carry Cece in and out of her kennel. Cece would benefit from a quiet and calm adult-only environment where she can adjust and decompress at her own pace. Further socialization sessions and behavior modification that utilizes force-free, reward-based methods are recommended. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I am looking for a home with a patient person.

Summary:: Cece was surrendered to BACC by her previous owner. Limited information was provided and her behavioral history with other dogs is unknown. 9/7/22: While off-leash at the Care Center, Cece is individually introduced to two separate novel male dogs. She approaches the first male to sniff him and leans in displaying a flagging tail. She whines before walking away and shaking off. She greets the second male in the same manner but is visibly more anxious, whining longer and louder as she walks away.

Summary (2):: 9/18: Cece is easily leashed and rushes out of her kennel to the play yard. Once in the yard, she races around before returning to the handler. She briefly seeks attention by pressing her cheek into the handler's hands before walking away. Cece ignores toys and selectively eats treats. When the session is over, Cece follows the handler back into the building but then balks and pancakes as she nears the room. The handler covers her with a blanket and picks her up to carry her back to her kennel. 9/17: When the handler approaches, Cece is standing at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and led out of the kennel. Once in the hallway, she starts and stops walking. The handler leads her to the play yard and Cece alternates between a loose and a neutral body. She relieves herself as needed, checks in with the handler, and occasionally solicits attention. The handler begins to walk Cece back to her kennel, though she pancakes just before the room door. The handler ultimately is able to run her into the kennel. 9/14: Cece is standing in front of her kennel door when handler approaches. She wags and steps readily into her leash. She walks out of the kennel with light/mild pulling and looks around cautiously as she moves through the hall. The handler guides her to the play yard and she head whips and gives short wiggles as handler attaches a drag leash. Once free to roam, she runs in short sprints, wiggling and wagging and then returning to neutral. She is mostly distant but approaches the handler twice to seek attention. She leans into petting and sits between handler's legs. After some time she is re-leashed to be led back to the kennel but she stops walking/pulls backward and lays down, at which point handlers gently cover her with a blanket and carry her back to kennel. They place her in without issue. 9/12: Cece is at the front of her kennel and is easily leashed. She rushes out of the kennel and is taken to the play yard. Once in the yard, Cece explores before relieving herself and then returns to the handlers. She briefly seeks attention before racing away to explore the scents in the yard. Cece does not show interest in balls and selectively accepts treats with a soft mouth. She briefly places herself in a handler's lap and accepts short soft pets but then begins whale eyeing and moves away. When the session is ended, Cece is easily leashed and refuses to walk back to her kennel. A trail of treats and coaxing is used but she remains resistant. A handler covers her with a blanket to pick her up and carry her back to her kennel.

Summary (3):: 9/9: Cece is standing in the front of the kennel with a neutral body and perked ears. She gently dodges the leash once before allowing relatively easy leashing and slowly, voluntarily exits the kennel. She is overall anxious on her relief walk, constantly darting her focus around and startling easily at loud noises. She is, however, sporadically loose and wiggly when spoken to. She is led to the play yard where she is neutral and allows handler to attach a drag leash. Once free to roam, she is momentarily energetic and wiggly. After running around in short sprints, she approaches seated handlers and seeks attention, rubbing against their legs and leaning into touch. She appears to be conflicted, leaning in wagging and then ceasing her wag and displaying brief lip licks. She is easily re-leashed after some time and led back inside. She pauses in front of her room and will not walk forward with any coaxing or treats. She allows handlers to towel her and carry her into kennel with a neutral body. 9/3/22: Cece is laying down resting in kennel when handler approaches. She displays whale eyes but stands and comes forward, sniffing at tossed treats. Handler opens the kennel door and she backs up in avoidance but allows easy leashing. She comes slightly forward with a nervous posture and tucked tail, but does not exit kennel. Handler opens the kennel door wide and stands to the side and she stands at the edge of the kennel, still to nervous to exit. After about ten minutes of coaxing and handler standing at a distance, Cece begins to inch toward stepping out of kennel and handler is able to guide her down and out on leash. She walks slowly and looks all around her nervously at the sound of the barking dogs in the kennels surrounding her and then moves out of the room quickly. She pauses at the door, nervous to enter the hallway and then walks carefully with a tucked tail out of the building. She is led to the play yard for a brief relief walk, although she does not relieve herself. She paces anxiously, panting and looking up at handler occasionally. She does not engage with treats. After some time of allowing her to explore, handler leads her back indoors without attempting to collar her due to fearfulness. She is hesitant but after a moment she walks back into her room and handler is able to run her into kennel without issue.

Summary (4):: 9/21: Cece is standing in the kennel with a neutral body when the handler approaches. She wags as they unlock the kennel door and allows swift, easy leashing. She pulls moderately as she exits and displays an exuberant wiggly body briefly before continuing to pull towards the exit of the building. She checks in with the handler often throughout the relief walk and allows petting all over her body. She takes treats gently from her hand. She pulls moderately on the way back to the kennel and stops walking twice but allows the handler to guide her along on a leash after a moment. She is run back into the kennel without issue. 9/19: Cece was easily leashed and walked to the yard. She allowed the handler to attach a leash to her collar, and she explored the area. Cece was interested in the dog at the adjacent pen and she repeatedly pawed at her gate. When the handler called her over, she jumped on her and allowed her to pet her. After her session, Cece pulled towards the building but immediately pancaked when she entered. She was lifted with a blanket and placed in her kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Cece is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Cece was noted to have several accidents in the home, please see the handout on house soiling. Fearful: Cece is fearful around new people and will shut down when overwhelmed. With slow approaches, she opens up. Please see the handout on decompression Strength/leash pulling: Cece's previous owner reported she pulls during her walks. She should be walked with a front leash harness to help manage her strength. Please see the handout on leash manners
