Animal Profile

Simba

Hello, my name is Simba. My animal id is #220138. I am a desexed male white dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/4/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form Simba is at risk for behavior reasons. Simba has begun to deteriorate in care. When being returned to kennel he will quickly turn towards handler and snap. Medically, he is apparently healthy. 🐾 Meet Simba! 🐾 Owner Surrender (limited time in previous home) Simba is a 9-month-old big puppy with a bold spirit and an even bigger heart. He came to ACC after a series of housing instability and transitions - passed between homes, with no real chance to settle down or learn the basics. Despite his rocky start, Simba's shown that he's curious, playful, and eager to connect with people once he feels safe. 🏡 My Ideal Home Simba is looking for an experienced, adult-only home where he can decompress and start fresh. He'll need structure, patience, and consistency - ideally with someone who understands adolescent dogs and is committed to helping him learn boundaries using only positive reinforcement. Simba will thrive in a calm environment with plenty of daily exercise and enrichment to channel his energy into healthy outlets. 👶 Good with Kids? Simba should be placed in a home with no children under 13. He can get overstimulated and mouthy when excited, and would do best with adults who can recognize and manage his arousal cues. 🐕 Good with Other Dogs? Simba has shown neutral to playful behavior around other dogs at the shelter. With careful introductions, he may enjoy having a canine companion - though slow and structured meet-and-greets will be key. 🦮 Leash Manners Simba pulls moderately on leash and sometimes zigzags or lunges toward small animals or people he finds interesting. He's easily redirected with treats but needs practice and patience to become a great walking buddy. 🩺 Overall Health Simba is in good health and recently neutered. He received all core vaccines, parasite prevention, and is microchipped. He was treated for a minor paw abrasion and had one instance of patella luxation noted - currently not affecting his mobility. 🎉 One Fun Fact Give Simba a squeaky toy and watch him zoom around with it like he's starring in his own action movie.

ENERGY LEVEL:: ENERGY LEVEL Simba is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Simba.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) Due to the behavior seen in the care center we feel that Simba may easily aroused by children, and would do best in an adult only home at this time. PLACE WITH A NEW HOPE PARTNER We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR Simba is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Simba will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on destructive behavior. BASIC MANNERS/POOR IMPULSE CONTROL It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on basic manners/ poor impulse control. SOCIAL HYPERAROUSAL/MOUTHINESS/POOR BITE INHIBITION Simba can become easily aroused during interactions with staff, becoming very jumpy and mouthy. We recommend interacting with him in a calm manner to avoid him becoming aroused as arousal and tip into aggression. Please see handout on Arousal and Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition. FEARFUL/POTENTIAL FOR DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION Simba has escalated to defensive behaviors during intake. His signs of discomfort must be respected; Simba should never be forced to interact; he should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach, and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Bella. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Simba's quality of life. Please see handout on fearfulness/ defensive aggression. ANXIETY Simba appears anxious at the care center, whining and demand barking at intake and during some initial relief walks. His owner described him as an anxious dog, but did not give details on how the anxiety manifested. If Simba displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on anxiety. ON-LEASH REACTIVITY Simba has been observed to bark and lunge at select individuals. Simba requires slow introductions to new people. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
